The U.S. had put a tax on all incoming goods that was so high; people would buy their goods from the north. This benefited the north and the United States economy, but caused great problems between the north and the south.
             The gap that had long existed between the North and the South widened during the 1850's, in part because of the perceptions that each section had of the other. To northerners, the slave power was bent on the extension of slavery over the entire nation, while to southerners the North was under the influence of demented leaders bent on abolition and civil war. Explain how these two views evolved. Was there any way that they could have been avoided? .
