Self-hatred Or Self-Improvement?

Some Asian women are having eyelid surgery to westernize their looks. Is it a form of self-hatred or simply for cosmetic appeal?.
Whether we as a society choose to accept it or not, the world filled with discrimination and racism. The "Eye of the Beholder" is a minor example of the everyday problems people face in this society. Every race has different physical characteristics; Middle Easterners have dark features, African Americans have black skin, Latinos have olive color skin, Asians have almond eyes, American are white, and there are thousands of other races with other characteristics. In America, the socially accepted appearance is the westernized "look." Many may desire to be "socially accepted." .
Although some Asian woman might be looking to "westernize" their appearance, it does not necessarily indicate a form of "self-hatred." In the world we live in today, it is very difficult to achieve and accomplish everyday problems without the interference of issues such as racism and discrimination. The idea of Pamela Brew deciding to have surgery on her eyelids should not be foreign. People have cosmetic surgery on their eyes, nose, lips, stomach, and practically every body part. I believe this eyelid surgery is just another form of cosmetic surgery, which within itself, is a form of self-hatred. Brew states that now she does not second-guess where her eye shadow will go. The surgery is just an approach for Brew to "feel more attractive" by the definition of the American society. The reason this Brew's particular surgical operation may stand out is because it compares what is socially believed to be flaw, such as a big nose or a small chest, with what may be racially natural. This is not self-hatred; it is just a form of self-improvement.
