Significance Of Endings

It is a very interesting perspective of how men perceive the opposite sex. From start to finish there are many instances of foreshadowing that is used to express to the reader that the wife, Martina, in the story was going to leave her husband, but why was not made apparent until half way through the story. Their feelings towards each other were expressed in detail and became very clear that she did not love him or want him in her life anymore. Something had changed between them. What changed? Apparently it was her sexual orientation that had changed. She was in love with another woman, named Helen, not her husband. The first paragraph of the story the reader is introduced to a couple who are in the midst of having sex. The term "making love" is used by the husband in the first line but it is only his perception not the reality of the situation. His love for his wife is intentionally described to the reader in order to generate the desired reaction to the end of the story. He is portrayed as being very passionate about his wife and would like her to be more of what he would like her to be. He notices, for example, "her pale blonde hair, the white curve of her closed eyelids .He would have liked to break her from the mould of her body; from its set, delicate lines." p. 265. This represents his desire to have his wife back. It's as if he does not know her anymore and wants to break her from her current mould. It is foreshadowing the fact that he thinks that she is not herself anymore and will eventually come to her senses and come back to him in a week's time. .
             The amount of detail provided about how they are reacting to each other in different situations is abundant and intentional:.
             He touched a strand of her hair where it lay along the pillow.
             She did not turn. A tremor passed through his limbs. .
             He felt the sweat grow cold on his back. He rolled off her and .
             lay still, (p. 266) .
             The reason Dorcey provides so much detail for each event between the couple is so that the reader can relate and understand what is motivating the characters.
