Global Cities Thesis

            
             Our world as we know it is going through the biggest change mankind has ever seen. No longer do our societies have to be built around flowing water, farms, pastures, and all the other basic resources a human needs to survive. Cities have created an environment where everything is imported and exported. Living in a global city means that a person can consume anything from almost anywhere. Most of the time people do not even realize or think about where what they are consuming came from. There are endless possibilities to the future of the importing and exporting businesses around the global cities because there will always be the demand for goods. This demand will also never end because no one in cities are producing their own products for survival anymore, everyone is relying on others to produce goods for them. On the other hand though the improvement in technology and the easy sufficient ways of distributing goods has changed our planet to a no boundaries land. People in every town almost everywhere in the world can order something by telephone or the Internet daily. This idea of a global city has created a new feeling on cities and their purposes. Global cities have the largest population per area and they also create the most money. Global cities generate more products and earn money through a network of cities. The world depends on cities to not only create and spread culture, but also help the nation make money. Are global cities thought of as negative?.
             To understand the power of cities one must look at the global cities thesis presented by Saskia Sassen. This thesis can be described as a process of economic change in cities that is leading to a growing polarization of the occupational and income structures. This in turn causes an absolute growth at both the top and bottom ends of the distribution and a decline in the middle of the distribution. She states a combination of spatial dispersal and global integration has created a new strategic role for major cities.
