Stonehenge: Why was it built.

Stonehenge, a giant stone circle situated on the Salisbury plains in England, 70 miles west of London, a has been speculated upon for many many years. There have been multiple theories on how and why Stonehenge was built; ranging from believable notions such as a giant astrological calendar to more alternative theories like Stonehenge is a landing site for space ships. The name Stonehenge is thought to mean "circle of stones". The earliest record of this huge monument was recorded in 1130 AD. Through radio carbon dating Stonehenge has been figured that construction began around 3100 BC and the final stages were figured to have been constructed around 1100 bc, but these dates can never bee 100 percent accurate. Although Stonehenge is the most famous stone circle on the Salisbury plains it is not, by any stretch the only circle present.
Throughout the decades when Stonehenge has been studied many groups of people have come up with theories on why it was built so many years ago. Some of the less scientific theories include aliens, building it to lure in and land space ships. Some of the occurrences that have strengthened some people's beliefs on the alien theory have been UFO sightings and hovering lights, although most people still remain skeptics on this explanation. The devil has also been brought up, some saying he built it as a place of worship. Another less common belief was that it was built during Arthurian times and the stones were moved to the current site and placed into position by Merlin, a wizard. Legend says that Aurelius, Arthur's uncle had Merlin construct Stonehenge as a monument to his soldiers that died in the battle against the Saxons.
One of the more common and believable theories was that Druids built Stonehenge as a place of worship and sacrifice. Druids were believed to be the priests, lawmakers and doctors of the Celtic people. Even though the theory of the druids is widely known and accepted by people it has begun to unravel, as the druids have no records of being in England when Stonehenge was being constructed.
