Pete Rose

The worst thing about Major League Baseball today is that Pete Rose is not in the hall of fame!!! Rose, who holds the record for most hits in MLB history with 4,256 was banned from baseball for allegedly gambling thousands of dollars on games as a player and a manager for the Cincinnati Reds.
             .
It was September of the 1985 season and Pete Rose had just passed Ty Cobb on the all time list for most hits with 4,192. Four years later Rose was banned from baseball by than commissioner Bart Giamatti, after it was concluded that Rose himself had bet on baseball games, including games involving his own team. Rose denied ever placing bets on Major League Baseball games. However, Bartlett Giamatti didn't believe him. There was never any absolute proof that Rose did indeed bet on baseball games. There was, however, considerable circumstantial evidence that Rose did place bets on baseball games, including games involving the Cincinnati Reds.
             .
Almost all of the indirect evidence during an investigation that was later called the Dowd Report was provided from former friends and associates of Pete Rose. The group of individuals were mostly men on the outside fringe of the sports world. Most of the men that derived this information were formerly convicted of felonies like illegal gambling, drug dealing (cocaine and steroids) and income tax evasion. The question is, are these felons reliable sources of information about Rose? Two of the men grew to resent Pete Rose, their former baseball friend. When asked about the Dowd Report, Rose said, "It was a hatchet job, a piece of crap." Commissioner Giamatti died of a heart attack on Sep. 1, 1989 and was replaced by Fay Vincent who said he had no intention of lifting Roses ban from baseball.
On November 8th, 1989 Rose admitted that he had gambled. Rose went on the Donahue TV talk show and told the world that he was a compulsive gamble and was seeking professional help.
