Gay Marriage

I Now Pronounce You Husband…and Husband?

Gay marriage is something that is slowly making it’s way into every community. At first, the thought of gay marriage was completely out of the question due to religious beliefs, but now we are seeing more of it due to government intervention. Arguments over gay marriage cover basically every topic you can think of, and many of them being based on religious ideas. When people begin to debate on this proposition it is quite easy to be bias because the people who are having an opinion on it are not always homosexual. Therefore, we must look at exactly why people should be able to be legally united, and do this without any form of racism or bigotry.

For every argument against gay marriage there seems to be a rebuttal that is quite logical. The first argument which goes against gay marriage is the fact that they cannot procreate, therefore have no reason to be married. The answer to that is the simple fact that if you are heterosexual, and unable to procreate, you are still allowed to be married. It does not matter if you are unable to reproduce because of infertility, age, or other causes, you are still

allowed to be united. This is the point which makes the argu

This coming from the mouth of a Presbyterian church leader seems to be very non-biased and open to what we call equality. Although this is the opinion of one member, not all members feel the same way.

Another reason coming from straight people opposing gay marriage is that they feel as though homosexual marriage will devalue the institution of marriage. Jane Hanna, of the Witherspoon Society Church brings forth a very acceptable point. She says that:

In the United States we say that all people are equal. Well, all married couples should be equal and allowed to have the same benefits if this is truly how we run this place. Unfortunately, it seems as though our laws are becoming a form of ‘catch 22’, if you will. For a married couple are able to receive each other’s pension benefits and other benefits such as company medical and dental plans. At the same time, we do not allow gay marriage which means that people who have been living together in a relationship for say 20 years are not allowed to be married and enjoy the financial benefits of marriage due to their sexual orientation. Another financial drawback that seems to be somewhat unfair is the ability to the ability of a gay person to claim their partner’s child on their taxes. Even though this child might have been raised and provided for by this other parental figure, they are not allowed to show anything for it because they were never married, once again because gay marriage is not legal in most places.
