Obesity in America
Obesity is the number one health concern in the United States today. Over recent years, this epidemic has particularly affected children. Some activists and health concern groups demand that the government takes some responsibility for the problem. We know the problem, but what has caused it? One obvious reason is the rise in processed food consumption that large companies are so adamant on pushing the public to buy. These companies include Kraft, Nabisco, Frito-Lay, and many others. They sell foods that are high in fat, saturated fat, simple sugars, cholesterol, and basically everything that the government tells us is unhealthy. The number one demographic that is advertised to is children. So few healthy options are available to children today. School cafeterias, fast food restaurants, and grocery stores are full of junk food; food low in nutrients, but full of fat, sugar, and calories. Most foods purchased today are processed and loaded with extra ‘stuff’ that isn’t needed. Less than 1% of the money government gives to farmers goes to fruits and vegetables that are consumed by citizens. Most (almost 70%) goes to corn farming. The corn is used mostly to feed animals that are eaten by the public. The rest is used to
Others will argue still that food is not the cause of obesity, rather, a downfall in the amount of physical activities performed by members of our society. This is especially true for children, who spend 4-5 hours a day on average watching TV. Also, the rise in crime and unsafe neighborhoods make it less frequent for children to be seen running around outside. However, this theory is ludicrous considering that diet and exercise both contribute to weight gain or loss and Americans have been eating more than at any other point in history. Another theory is that the advertisements is not what causes obesity. Some will argue that health is a personal responsibility for every person. In this case, the blame for obese children falls fully on the parents and/or guardians. The big companies are just giving the public what the public wants. They feel that they have acted responsibly in their conquest of consumers' interests. Why is this so? The only reason any policy exists without challenge or change: money. Food has become so cheap to make that movie theater popcorn costs less to produce than the bag it comes in. Large food companies make ridiculous amounts of money because people consume more food than they need to. These rich companies are important campaign-fund providers for government officials in Congress and the Senate. If regulations are placed on these companies, they will lose money, these government members will lose money, and Americans will continue to grow fatter and unhealthier
