The overall role of Chance, the Gardener, consists mostly of Nonverbal Communication. The beginning of the movie starts with the TV and himself. He does not have anybody else except the Luis-the mate, and the TV, therefore he is not used to speak a lot. At lunch, he is focused on the TV, and not so much on the mate who announces the death of the master. He just looks at her showing a meaning of having no idea, and asks for his lunch. In my mind as a third party observer, I am still trying to understand whether he has a high genetic intellect, listening skills, and logical thinking, which are developing through the movie and helping him become the famous, wise and important person in the political sphere; or it is just a coincidence, and he does not have any of these qualities described above. In my eyes, Mrs. Chance, the Gardener is a person to admire and learn from, because only his personality brought him to high success and appreciation, while people who have personal qualities and wish to be noticed, do not know how to present themselves and attract others’ attention, interest and respect. I would really like to know a person like that because I would feel secure and amused in his company.

Generally, Chance, the Gardener, has a polite attitude, he makes others believe that he has precise manners and he had always lived in rich family, which would be the reason for his gentlemen’s attitude toward others and lack of demonstratively expressed emotions. Those characteristics are typical to the upper class citizens, with high education and intellectual minds. Those are the reasons that make him look trustful and respectful in the eyes of the other characters, which hold a high standing in the society. He holds the door for the ladies, he gives his hands to salute gentlemen, he maintains good eye contact with people, and expresses coolness (not nervousness) when communicating with people from higher standings. Those nonverbal communication skills that Chance is using helped him being viewed and accepted as a person from the upper class, being valued and respected. They also make him attractive to woman and man, as shown in the movie. Nonverbal communication plays a big role in Chance’s attitudes, because nonverbal communication is more believable when it comes to knowing a person. According to the textbook of Interpersonal Communication, nonverbal Cues are Multichanneled – “nonverbal cues come to our perception center from a variety of sources simultaneously” (Beebe and Redmond 210). The book compares them as to watching a TV with many channels at one time. In the movie itself, Chance is always changing the channels and watching a piece of different programs one after another. I see this as a connection between the TV and the Nonverbal communication that Chance is using.
