What dreams may come
You may have seen Robin Williams in a movie called “What Dreams May Come.” It’s a sad story about a family that faced terrible tragedy. First of all, the two kids were killed in a car accident on the way to school. Then, a few years later, their father, Chris (Robin Williams), is killed in an accident too. His wife, Annie, finding herself alone, can’t cope with all the pain, so she commits suicide. This is only what happens here on earth. The movie is mainly about what happens after that; the afterlife. When Chris dies, he finds himself in Heaven. It’s a beautiful place, (thanks to a lot of cool special effects work) where all his dreams really do come true. His dog was there, his children were there, and even his house was there, but there was still something missing. You see, when Annie committed suicide, she went to Hell. She is separated from her family and is lost in this dark pit of despair. There is no way out for her. Chris can’t accept this. He decided to go down into the fiery pits of Hell to try to rescue Annie. It’s a horrible, difficult journey. Eventually, Chris does find his wife, but there is a
To end this area in a happy note, I’ll tell you how this movie portrays Heaven, and what the Bible has to say about it. The Bible has numerous accounts of Heaven in the Bible. A good example is in Matthew 5:12 where Heaven is described as our home and all happiness can be achieved. The movie portrays Heaven as a place where all your dreams, big or small, can come true as long as you believe in them. Heaven is what you make it according to this film. This kind of goes against Jesus’ teachings, but actually goes along with them, too. It can be seen as going against it because Chris “builds” his own Heave, when it is clearly stated in the Bible that Jesus is the builder of Heaven and will call you when your room is ready. The movie goes along with the church teachings because Heaven is supposed to be everything that can possibly make you happy. That’s what Chris had, total happiness. He had his entire family with him. The social justice issues of solidarity and participation are shown together in this movie. On earth, Chris had a happy family who’d do anything for each other, but when they were separated in the afterlife, he showed his call to participation in the family by trying to reunite them. Through sheer teamwork and solidarity, Chris, his son, and the gate keeper of Hell, were all able to work together and got Annie out of her Hell. They were reunited again in Heaven and were able to fully participate with each other in Heaven. In this movie, the teachings of Jesus are constantly being broken and at times followed. In Hebrews 12:14, it talks about how it is necessary for the soul to be purified before it can enter Heaven. When Chris died, he went to purgatory to be cleansed so he can enter Heaven. When he finally realized that all his dreams could come true if he just believed, he put all of his trust into God and was finally able to enter Heaven.
