Of Mice and Men

Recently I have read a book called “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck. The novella deals with several important issues of the 1930’s, for example the Great Depression and Discrimination against coloured people. Also it is involved with the American Dream. Which the two main characters are chasing. I will be discussing and exploring the main theme of the novella, loneliness and I will show how its causes and effects are depicted through different characters.

The novella is set in the 1930’s during the Great Depression. This helps the author convey the novellas main theme: loneliness. As a result of the recession many workers became migrant and ended up moving all over America and because they travel alone most of the men become lonely, secluded and isolated.

The novella is about two itinerant workers, George Milton and Lennie Small. George is a short man with a dark complexion and a down-to-earth attitude. Lennie is a huge bear-like man with a mind of a small child. They are forced to travel all over the USA to find work because of Lennie’s mistakes and also because of America’s Great Depression during the 1930’s.

When they move to Soledad (Spanish for ‘Alone’) they encounter more problems due to Lennie’

I am now going to talk about Curley’s Wife. Curley’s wife is a tall, pale-skinned lady, with shoulder length curly black hair. In the story she does not get given a name. I think this helps to add to the fact that nobody really wants to know about her. No-one wants to know about her because they see her as trouble because if people talk to her, they get a reprimand from her husband. This secludes her from everyone else except her husband which adds to the fact she is lonely. Also she may be lonely because she has no other female people on the farm. This means that she might feel alone as this and the fact she can’t talk to any men means she can’t talk to anyone. One example of her loneliness is that when Lennie is in the barn, nearer the end of the book, he has just killed one of the new-born pups. Curley’s Wife finds out about this and pretends not to care. I think she does this so as not to frighten her off, because is she gets onto him, Lennie’s child-like mind might not no what to do, and he might panic. Then she wouldn’t be able to talk to him. After this has all happened she starts pouring her heart into Lennie, and Lennie just sits there with a fixed expression pretending to listen. She goes on to talk about how she could have been in broadway and have been a star but her mother prevented her from doing so. This leads to letting Lennie feel her hair. Lennie likes the feel of her hair and doesn’t want to stop fondling it. This puts Curley’s Wife in a bit of a panic and she ends up struggling and in a frantic rush, Lennie shakes her too hard and breaks her neck. This shows the consequences of being so lonely.

The final characters I am going to discuss are the main ones, Lennie and George. Although they have each other, George might still be lonely b
