Where the Pill Takes You: An Analogy of the Blue and Red Pil
In ¡§The Matrix¡¨ many philosophical questions are posed, one of which is the question of which pill to take. ¡§You take the blue pill, the story ends, you wake up and you believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.¡¨(qutd. by Morpheus in the Matrix, 1999) Why not take the red pill? Reasons to take the red pill are that it reveals the truth, it shows new meanings to life, and it shares knowledge about the answers to the questions. It can be argued though that the world of the senses is the only place for mankind, like when a mind is freed it does not always accept it. The blue pill supports this and keeps you in this world of senses and comfort; ¡§where real is what you can feel, what you can smell, what you can taste and see.¡¨(qutd. by Morpheus in the Matrix, 1999) The problem is how can it be a world of comfort when the questions still plague you, ¡§What is real? How do you define real?¡¨(qutd. by Morpheus in the Matrix, 1999) Once the red pill is taken, it uncovers the truth of the picture before our eyes.The picture before taking the red pill is false and ¡§is the world that is pulled before your eyes to hide you from the truth.¡¨(qutd.
by Morpheus in the Matrix, 1999) The red pill is only offering the truth. If the truth were offered, no matter how awful or terrifying it was, wouldn¡¦t you still want to hear it? The truth is always there for one to see it; it is just a matter of wanting to see it. Some are happy spending their whole lives in the cave, sharing stories, watching the shadows and living in their chains but if you were able to escape from that cave, that matrix, just to know the truth would you? Just knowing the truth that the life inside the cave was pointless is satisfactory enough to take the red pill. Knowing and acknowledging this truth can help reveal the true meaning of existence, ¡§Let the truth be your guide.¡¨(qutd. by Morpheus in the Matrix, 1999) Today, knowledge is a form of power and with it, one is able to do great things. Taking the red pill allows you to understand things like, ¡§ What you know you can¡¦t explain, but you feel it. You¡¦ve felt it your entire life, that there¡¦s something wrong with the world.¡¨(qutd. by Morpheus in the Matrix, 1999) If you were able to be on the outside, just to know that it was a dream, to really see what real is like, would you go just to know? The red one allows you to know what few do and to give you knowledge and understanding of the answers.
