Feelings of respect, closure and recognition overcome Gene as he lets go of years of guilt and falls into the level of esteem once again. After the death of Phineas, Gene realizes that he was a true friend, even though he doubted the fact. Finny was always there for Gene and would do anything for him. Gene realizes that he took this friendship for granted, but is glad he shared his experiences in life with Finny. Although nobody “talked about Finny, he was, however present in every moment of everyday” (194). Finny was such an influence that he taught Gene how to “size up the world” (194). Forester has closure on his past because went back and forced closure. Gene’s guilt is done and he has come to realize what has happened is over with and done.
