The Effect Of Media On Children

The Amount of Media Children Consume:

There are many types of media children consume in this day and age. There is television, the Internet, computer and video games, newspapers, magazines, movies, videos, and music. Media is used for several reasons including: entertainment, research, news, and learning tools. Parents often find it very easy to use media as an electronic babysitter, especially when it is hard for them to hire a real babysitter. Although media is often used for good reasons, many bad things can come from it, and parents should put a limit on how much media their children consume, as well as keeping an eye on what type of media they are consuming.

Television can be used to communicate something educational to children in an entertaining manner. There are several programs that can stimulate the imaginations of children, such as Barney, Sesame Street, and Bill Nye. These programs can have a favorable impact on the child’s development. Television can also be used for good, clean fun. Cartoons are an example of something that is not harmful for children to watch. There are many shows meant for children that do not direct violent or harmful messages to children, but there are some shows that di

Parents often do not listen to the lyrics of the music their children are listening to. Even if the parents do not approve of the music their child is listening to, the child can use headphones so nobody can hear the music but himself. Many parents do not realize the content of the music that their children are consuming when headphones are worn. A lot of the music on the radio these days has foul language or talks about violence.

There are some things that can be done to keep children from harmful media, which requires a little more effort on the parents’ part. Parents need to get involved with what their children are doing online, watching on television, listening to in their rooms or headphones, and reading in magazines or newspapers. Parents should discuss why something is or is not appropriate to watch or listen to.

Although there are magazines meant for children, they might get a hold of a magazine that belongs to their parents, in which the content is only meant for mature adults. They could see something in a magazine or a newspaper that is an act of inappropriate behavior, and repeat that. In one issue of Newsday, there was an article accompanied by a picture of a Yankees baseball pitcher raising his middle finger to the crowd.# A child who saw that picture may not have read the article which told about how he got fined for it, but presto, “giving the finger” becomes an acceptable way to show frustration and anger. After all, it was in the newspaper.

The Internet is a very widely used form of media. It is commonly used for e-mail, research, games, news, weather, entertainment, and chatting with people that may be long-distance to call. There are many uses for the Internet that can bring about high-quality results. The Internet has a reputation for anarchy, but in practice, it is monitored and policed. From the actions of the Internet Watch Foundation to the notorious snooping law, the internet is fast becoming one of the most regulated media in history.# There are, however many ways to get around regulations, as well as many downfalls to the internet.
