Masculinity in Shakespeare's Othello

On a superficial level, the story of "Othello" is one of jealousy, love and an unquenchable thirst for power. When we take a step closer and delve into what's happening, it's easy to see the problems surrounding possession, ownership, power, property, politics, security, insecurity, and love. On their own, these individual problems seem to be just that, unrelated. A closer look reveals the underlying problem of masculinity. In an era strictly dominated and enforced by men, there was a lot to live up to for those born male. Masculinity is the dangerous conceit and underlying root of all complications in Shakespeare's "Othello." Masculinity could mean any number of things in this context. What comes to mind initially is the macho sense of the word, that every man needs to lift weights and suppress any emotion that might reveal some vulnerability. The definition implied here is the idea that a man has certain duties that he must fulfill to be considered masculine. Such duties include things like providing for a family, be a leader, or have a daughter and protect her both physically and emotionally; because after all women are just property who c

Analysis of Tchaikovskys 6th Symphony - Pathetique

Tchaikovsky's 6th and final symphony was, for me, a random choice when picking out a piece of music to study. The criteria for a piece I wanted to analyze and look into were based it being a popular piece, a symphony, and composed by someone fairly modern so I was sure to acquire enough background. After that, it was a random choice after searching through prominent symphonies. I had heard of Tchaikovsky in my earlier years due to the fact that he had written the "The Nutcracker Suite," which is an extremely popular ballet and adored by millions (1 Dick). I knew nothing of Tchaikovsky other than that, so it was sure to be something new to me. In having the option to choose a very recent or modern artist versus an artist/composer from years ago, I wanted to go with the music that I am not accustomed too. I felt anything in the past 50 or so years was to me, boring. I wanted to research a symphony because it is these long, moving and dynamic pieces that appealed most to me th

Medical Ethics During Disasters

"First, Do No Harm..." That is the statement contained in all code of ethics in the medical profession. Disaster medicine sometimes makes this a very difficult task. In ordinary daily medical care, attention is focused on doing what is best for the patient following the basic ethical principles of beneficence, non-maleficence, autonomy and justice. The goal of disaster medicine is to do the greatest good for the greatest number of people or casualties. It is not the intent to allow pain and suffering or a slow agonizing death but, it does happen inadvertently with limited resources available during a disaster. Some would consider this as doing harm by allowing suffering. Disaster situations utilize a public health ethics model more than they do a medical ethics model with the end goal of obtaining a balance between individual and collective rights of the patients (Karadag and Hakan 608). According to the World Medical Association, a disaster is the sudden occurrence of calamitous, usu

Time - My Arch-Nemesis

Dear Time, You are my arch-nemesis. My main point of allegation in our relationship is your unreliability. For instance, whenever I am challenged with a new assignment, you mock me with lengthy concepts of weeks and months, only to suddenly pounce upon me mere hours before the deadline. Try as I may, you have a callous ability to send me spiraling into the dangers of procrastination. It is a sadistic cycle accompanied by the reckless ticking of a clock, its hands powered only by your unshakable linear force. To no avail, attempt to manage you with intricate iPhone reminders, schedules, and calendars, but just when I think I have you under my control, you contend wildly again as I startle to realize that I am promptly running out of you. "Stop, please! Slow down!" I implore, yet you, of all people, wait for no one

Personal Essay - The Things I Carry

The things I carry are largely determined by necessity. I carry a Camelbak water bottle almost everyday due to the many benefits of water including a boosted metabolism, cleaner skin, and healthy bodily functions. A necessity that comes in a close second behind my water is my iPhone. My iPhone is not only entertaining but allows me access to the entire world via the tap of a finger. With my phone, I carry abilities ranging from communicating with my loved ones in case of an emergency to setting a reminder for a 4 o'clock dentist appointment. My credit card is an object I never leave home without, as it enables me to purchase the mandatory food, drink, gas, and so on. In addition to my card I always have a few bills lying around in case I am put in a situation where credit is not accepted. Loose change is abundant in my purse, as my coin pouch, also present in my purse, broke weeks ago. The change has remained ever since and will probably expand to three times its original size by the time I decide to finally fix my coin pouch. I additionally view car keys as an essential as they permit me to drive my brother to and from school, although

Prophecies of Oedipus Rex

In the play "Oedipus Rex," by Sophocles (rpt. In James P. Place Literature: A reader for Freshman Composition ll, 2nd ed. [Boston: Pearson, 2012] 120-166) the Oracles had prophesied that Oedipus would kill his father and beget children by his mother. By the end of this terrific play the prophecy had become true and everyone knew it. But, the main arguing point is to decide whether or not Oedipus was the puppet of fate or the creator of his own fate. But what it really is conveyed as is a combination of both throughout the play. As a baby, Oedipus' mother and father sent him away with a shepherd to put Oedipus in the mountains to die. This was all because they received a prophecy from the Oracles stating that their son will kill its father and beget children by his mother. But, when being brought into the mountains by the shepherd, the shepherd ran into a shepherd from another place called Corinth and gave the baby to him to bring back to Corinth as he could not let a little baby suffe

Huckleberry Finn's Physical vs. Moral Journey

An adventure is an unusual and exciting, typically hazardous, experience or activity. In the "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" by Mark Twain, Huck goes on an adventure down the Mississippi River and has many experiences along the way. The book is about the journey Huck goes through, facing the challenges of living on a raft and constantly looking for food and money. Huck grows morally throughout the book as he meets different people and develops bonds with people he never thought would be possible. As Huck ventures throughout his physical journey, he also pursues a moral journey. In the beginning of the book, Huck is fairly arrogant and does not have good morals. He lives in Missouri with his abusive father and does not have a mother. Huck's way of thinking is childish and heavily influenced by his father and the widow. By the middle of his journey his own morals start to change and he is

Phantom Limbs - Causes and Treatments

A phantom limb is the sensation that an amputated or missing limb is still attached to the body and is moving appropriately with other body parts; this occurs due to nerve damage or injuries to the spinal cord. The first documented case of phantom limb pain was in 1551 by the French military surgeon Ambroise Paré. He reported that "For the patients, long after the amputation was made, they say that they still feel pain in the amputated part." The term 'phantom limb' was first introduced by the American neurologist Silas Weir Mitchell in 1871. He described that "thousands of spirits limbs were haunting as many good soldiers, every now and then tormenting them.' However, not all phantom limbs are painful, patients often feel as if they are gesturing, feel itches, twitch, or even try to pick up things. Some people's representations of their limbs do not actually match what they should be, for example, one patient reported that her phantom arm was about 6 inches too short (Ramacha

Patronage in Early Medieval Rajasthan

Patronage in Early Medieval Rajasthan: the making and maintaining of the Dilwara Temples, Mt. Abu, Rajasthan. We visit a temple to either offer our prayers to the deity or admire the overall art and architecture of it. Admiring the aspects of art and architecture would generally include the form and composition of the temple structure and the iconography of the deity etc. What we often tend to miss out is to learn as to how the temple came to be as it is? Who funds the construction of the temple structure? Well there is no point in admiring the beauty of the engravings and the idol unless we know the reason why and how it was made. This is where we turn to study about the Patron or the donor who gives patronage or make donations to the temple. The act of patronage can be made to other fields too like, literature, music, painting, and politics but for this assignment, I would stick to the patronage of the temples with main focus on the Dilwara Temples of Mount. Abu, Rajasthan. As me

Rappaccini's Daughter and the Garden of Eden

"Rappaccini's Daughter," written by Nathaniel Hawthorne is about Dr. Rappaccini, a medical researcher who produces a garden of poisonous plants. Rappaccini brings up his daughter (Beatrice) to tend the plants. Beatrice becomes resistant to the poisons, but in the process she becomes poisonous to others. In the story, Hawthorne has created many similarities between Adam and Eve's story in the Bible Genesis 1 and 2 and "Rappaccini's Daughter" version of creation. In both "Rappaccini's Daughter" and the Genesis chapters in the bible, I can definitely say the gardens are the setting. Both gardens have a type of a forbidden plant that should not be touched. Both gardens have sort of evil character that tries to destroy things. Both plants were located in center of the gardens which gently means deadly plant. One way I find the two gardens are identical is that the both garden have a type of a forbidden plant that should not be touch on them. In Genesis' creation story,

Pornograpy and Deviant Behaviours

Abstract This paper discusses the many ways in which access to pornographic material has led to an increase in deviant sexual attitudes and behaviors. Through the use of research, experiments, articles, presentations and surveys, I am acquainted with the different individuals who are affected by viewing and using these sexual explicit materials. Detail information is given on the effects that pornography have on married couples, single men and women, adolescents, and children. This paper relates these individuals high level of addiction to porn. Men and women generally become warped in their perception about sex and relationships. They think sexual abuse, aggression and degradation are normal and fun. Male porn viewers regard women as just sex objects and have problems relating to "real" women. Pornography use has had harmful effects on marriages and result in divorces and breakdowns in families and other social relationships. Female users on the contrary develop poor self-esteem and d

Criminal Justice in a Correctional Environment

Correctional Officers Correctional facilities are structured to house prisoners that have been convicted of crimes. The job that the correctional officers have is considered a highly stressful job and usually goes unnoticed by society. A correctional officer's job never ends; they work long hours at times and put up with more problems than the average police officer working the streets. A person eighteen years of age or older that is hired at a correctional facility will get about two weeks to a month of training as a cadet. A cadet's job is to focus on the correctional officer and learn what that correctional officer is teaching them. This is the first of many times that the cadet will come in contact with prisoners. The cadet's will learn the basic fundamentals while in this training mode such as; how to count prisoners, how to fill out the daily paper work, and how to find and discover contraband. The most important thing a cadet will learn is that once they become certified correct

Bonds and Guarantees and Contractors

Bonds and Guarantees Introduction Bonds and guarantees are relatively complex instrument that attempt to set out the obligations between two parties that are consequential upon the actions or inactions of another party. A bond is usually contained in a document given by a third party in support of the obligations of another party, containing a promise to pay money immediately or on a future date. It thereby provides an assurance to the beneficiary that the contracting party will perform its obligations and security if it does not. Performance bonds are most likely to be called in the event of a contractor going insolvent or (less frequently) in the event of a dispute between the employer and the contractor. The obligation to pay money is commonly capped at 10% of the contract sum until completion of the works and then at 5% until the rectification of defects notified in the warranty period is complete. These sums and periods are, however, a matter of negotiation. A guarantee is given

Racial Controversy and Huckleberry Finn

As I got into the car and drove away from Hannibal, another childhood memory returned. It was my father's voice reminding me that "Hannibal is rough on Negroes."" This is a quote by Julius Lester, from his essay Morality and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. He is reminded of this particular quote by his father in the year 1973, after having been denied several motel rooms, speculating that the judgment of the motel staff upon his race was the cause of such misfortune, which is likely, given the year (consider that civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated only five years prior) and location. Lester continues to write a haunting take on The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, where he describes the nature of the book to be quite morally bankrupt. His opinions are shared by many, specifically the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and many school districts. In his essay "Born to Trouble: One Hundred Years of Huckleberry Finn," Justin Kapl

Altruism from an Evolutionary Perspective

Altruism is an interesting field that many academic areas such as psychology, biology, and economics, debate about. One may define altruism as a selfless regard for the well being of other individuals. A behavior is believed to be evolutionary altruistic if it has any effects on fitness. Fitness is the ability to reproduce successfully; survival is also relatable with fitness but only if it supports reproductive success. The stinger of the honeybee is considered an altruistic trait for it eviscerates itself when it stings an intruder to the colony and it keeps producing venom even after the bee has died, which is a benefit to the rest of the bees. Other examples of altruism would be the food sharing in bats, insects helping their own kind to reproduce, and warning calls in various birds and mammals. But if organisms really were to execute altruistic roles, they would fail to win the evolutionary race against the ones that do not perform selfless behaviors. The recipients would advanc

The Effectiveness of School Voucher Programs

Executive Summary The idea of school vouchers was proposed 50 years prior by an economist, Milton Friedman. Friedman anticipated that better run private schools might reinstate schools in a commercial center that might have practically zero tolerance for scholarly disappointment. Soon the predictions of Friedman became reality and it was found that appalling test scores, alarmingly low secondary school graduation and school passageway rates, constrained instruction open doors inside and outside schools, and racial and monetary detachment have knitted the training scene on May inward city groups (Rand). These frightful conditions have headed numerous folks to seek after options to the universal government funded school framework, including vouchers. Supporters of school decision and the voucher framework feel that the absence of satisfactory decision will realize an end to general society school framework. The adversaries of school decision and vouchers contend that decision and vouch

Analysis of Alex Rivera's Sleep Dealer

Statistics compiled by the Pew Hispanic Center report that an estimated 11.7 million illegal immigrants resided in the United States in 2012, 58% of that population being from Mexico (Passel). With over half of this massive population being from just south of the border, it is no wonder why discussion surrounding immigration in the news is dominated by topics such as violence in border communities due to drug trafficking, the "takeover" of Spanish speakers in the U.S., the competition for jobs amongst American citizens and Mexican immigrants, and the financial burden placed on border states to support this illegal population. In his movie, "Sleep Dealers," director Alex Rivera takes his viewers decades into the future where none of these burdens related to immigration exist; the borders have been shut down and the only interaction that the United States maintains with immigrant workers is through robots controlled by Mexican workers in factories across the border in Ciudad

The Goddess Hera - Marriage and Family

INTRODUCTION Hera is the Greek goddess of marriage & family, women, and in some legends, the goddess of childbirth (in others it is her daughter, Eileithyia). Juno is her Roman counterpart, as they share many qualities and traits. Hera is wife to Zeus, the king of the gods, making her the queen of the gods. She is a highly faithful and devoted wife to her husband; however he is not so faithful in return. Hera is often portrayed as being jealous and vengeful toward her husband's mistresses and their illegitimate children. This is why Hera would be the perfect face for our new elixir, "Ultimate Devotion". This is an elixir that, when consumed, has the almost magical ability to keep hour partner completely and infallibly true to you and only you for the rest of his/her life (as long as he/she continues to ingest the product weekly). This product has been extremely popular since the day it was released, selling thousands of bottles weekly. 96% of test subjects saw improvement

Strategic Management of the FedEx Corporation

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY During one of his two combat tours in Vietnam, Federal Express CEO Frederick Smith got a quick lesson in survival from a crusty Marine sergeant. "Lieutenant," the sergeant told Smith, "there's only three things you gotta remember: shoot, move, and communicate."(Fortune, Nov. 1997) Some thirty plus years later, and at the helm of one the shipping industry's largest competitors, Smith has utilized that same tactical advice in the business world. His maneuvering of FedEx has incorporated an aggressive shooting strategy as the company has emerged into numerous shipping regions around the world such as Asia, and furthermore, FedEx continuously has been pursuing and developing a solid foundation and infrastructure for the company and its future. One example is the addition of a new hub in the Philippines, at Subic Bay. His movement has guided the company to innovate its products and develop with the needs of its customers. Finally, the use of commu

Symbolism in A Good Man is Hard to Find

"A Good Man is Hard to Find" is the story of a family whose lives are taken in a foreshadowed accident that could have easily been avoided. Had the family listened to the warnings of their crazy grandmother, devastation would not have ended their lives all at once. The fatal truth that there are no good men left in the world is the true reason the family 's vacation ended their lives forever. The story goes on to contradict itself when God's grace teaches a valuable lesson to the two main characters, both undeserving of God's pure teachings. Both characters learn by the grace of God that they are extremely different, but at the same time, much alike in many different ways. Significance is found in the story through the lesson that humans overall cannot determine good from evil or right from wrong. Human beings cannot correctly judge one another. Judgment is inevitably left up to God. The faltered definition of a "good man", misinterpretation of a "lady", a

Young Woman in Black by Mary Cassatt

The impressionist painting "Young Woman in Black (Portrait of Mrs. Gardner Cassatt)" (1883), by Mary Cassatt, features a thoughtful woman looking into the distance, filling the frame. Cassatt maintained an interest in capturing life as it was, much like a photographer would. She often depicts scenes similar to this one; with female subjects that appear unposed. Mary Cassatt is not romanticizing women or presenting a fantasized version of a woman, such as Venus or Madonna. Particularly in this painting, with its drastic dark colors and unapologetic approach, Cassatt is presenting an austere, noble, and mature woman. This goes as far as implying that Cassatt "understands the woman of the world; because she is one herself" (Caldwell, 4). In this work, Cassatt has removed any objectification associated with the female, and instead presents a beautifully rendered portrait of a complex woman. In order to fully understand her work, it is important to first understand Mary Cassatt. Uninterested in conforming to the rigid societal gender roles in place, she took advantage of her upper middle class status. She was la

A Clean Diet and a Healthy Lifestyle

For years, I felt weighed down and sluggish, despite being active, dieting and what I pursuing what I believed to be a healthy lifestyle. I wondered what was the cause of my lack of energy. I was frustrated at my weight, despite my hours of cardio in the gym. I ate a pretty good diet, watching my caloric intake, or so I thought. I decided to take a personal inventory of what I was eating in conjunction with my activities and how I felt in response. The first step was I literally tore my pantry apart and rummaged through the refrigerator, doing what I called "research." I read labels, ingredients, kept track of eating and exercise habits for the course of a month, and after becoming a bit obsessed, I came to the realization I hadn't been eating as well as I thought. Granted my kitchen contained a lot of diet friendly products, "low fat, low-calorie, low-sugar, sugar-free etc.", many of them lacked nutrition. The body needs vitamins, fibers, proteins, and carbohydrates

Assesment of Capacity Building in Schools

The educational system requires competent strategies that incorporate emerging trends to facilitate success. Leadership and diversity are some of the factors that should be incorporated in the school system. A set of standards in the rapidly changing school environment can be useful in guiding the administrators' objectives. The standards play a major role in reforming an underperforming school, and improve the overall performance of both teachers and students. The school should have a vision that enables the members to work towards achieving the set goals. The vision is to aim at providing and accessing higher quality education through embracing innovation and participatory roles in the school fraternity. Interaction between the teachers and students is critical in the learning process. The students can assume leadership roles in the classroom setting; this improves their confidence level, which in turn results in them acquiring relevant leadership roles. Effective capacity building

The Pruitt Igoe Myth

Nearly 60 years ago, history was made in Saint Louis, Missouri. Around 1950, the city of Saint Louis was known as a place of segregation and abandonment. Due to the need for better living conditions, restoration of Central Saint Louis, and overall population decline, the city decided it was time for a change. They came to a final decision to build an eleven story, fifty-seven acre apartment building, which consisted of thirty three buildings. The city believed constructing these monuments would renew their population growth and overall improve the city; however, that was not the case. Today it is still an issue regarding how the thirty six million dollar project came to be a failure. Many believed African Americans were the cause; others thought it had to do with poor maintenance and inefficient management; and the rest assumed the architectures and housing authority were the blame. The Pruitt Igoe Housing Project was unsuccessful because of multiple factors that were ignored, inclu
