The Atomic Bomb - Heroism or Crime? On August 6, 1945, the world officially entered the nuclear age when the United States dropped an atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima. Three days later, the U.S. dropped a second atomic bomb on Nagasaki, and on August 14, the Japanese government agreed to an unconditional surrender that all but ended World War II. These bombings halted the planning of Operations Olympic and Coronet, which entailed the full-scale Allied invasion of Japan, and also showed the true power of the American economy and workforce. In these respects, the United States was justified in using the most powerful weapon of the time to end the greatest conflict in human history. Before the successful testing of the atomic bomb, the United States had an elaborate set of plans for the invasion of Japan that were developed in the spring and summer of 1945. According to Davis, in "The Invasion Not Found in the History Books," an article found in the Omaha World Herald, Operation Olympic would begin with "X-Day& |

Poems by Philip LarkinQuestion A great poem puts into words what we already know but had not thought of saying. How far and by what means has a poet you studied achieved this? Philip Larkin Larkin goes from general to specific as he takes a momentary experience of observing dancers and explores the meanings of being an individual that is detached yet has some sort of connection that makes him similar with others. The title "Reasons for Attendance" suggests the reasons people live referring to the different reasons as to why people live/ attend life; how different people have different forms of happiness. In this poem Larkin visits the experience most of us know of, about the longing of being in a social group that one is not a part of, yet finds comfort in the thought that they do not belong in the group where one's form of personal happiness cannot be achieved. This idea of individual to society is demonstrated through the two different perspectives of one situation. "The dancers " |

The Transformation of Bacterial DNAHypothesis Bacteria will cultivate in the presence of pGLO, and the student whose sample contains arabinose will exhibit fluorescence under the UV light even after DNA isolation, quantification, restriction digest, and protein analysis. Discussion/Analysis The experiments begin with the transformation of pGLO plasmid in E.coli. We observed growth in each of the three cultures due to the presence of the LB broth and the pGLO. Any bacteria present on the LB/AMP and LB/AMP/ARA plates exhibit successful bacterial transformation, because only the bacteria with the transformed DNA can grow in the presence of ampicillin. The third plate; Figure 3, (LB/AMP/ARA) glows under the UV light due to the presence of arabinose (ARA), it activates the expression of the GFP gene that contributes to fluorescence. For the next lab, the transformed DNA is isolated, and then centrifugation is used to collect a cell pellet to be used in later labs. I had the culture with ampicillin and arabinose, while Moh |

Consumerism in InidaConsumerism, the movement or policies aimed at regulating the products, services, methods, and standards of manufacturers, sellers, and advertisers in the interests of the buyer. In India, these things combined equal the positive impacts that India has been experiencing over the last 20 years. With so many positive consumer goods spilling out of India, it has become one of the best ways to survive and thrive. The personal ambition and a desire for material success is what lead India to become open to the ideas and concept of global consumerism. India has become one of the most successful regions of our age when it comes to creating consumerism products and goods. Possibly the most challenging concept of the market is to deal with understanding behavior. The attitudes of Indian consumers have gone under some major transformations within the last few years. Like most, the consumers of India today want to live a life of comfort and luxuries are of course included in that. Living in the |

The Evolution of Vogue and the Magazine IndustryThe magazine industry has come a long way since its' beginning. Vogue Magazine, famously known for their fashion features and beautifully photographed cover images, has grown a lot since their first issue. The monthly fashion magazine originally began as a weekly women's journal, and their inaugural issue " which was released on December 17th 1892 " looks very different than what we know and love today. Vogue was one of the first magazines that appealed to women, and is still highly read and loved today because of it. The 1892 cover showcased a black and white illustration, featuring a woman in a full-length gown, very much proving itself as a fashion magazine early in the ranks. It wasn't until the late 1890s and early 1900s, specifically 1909, that color illustrations were introduced to Vogue's covers. Vogue "who are known for bright photographs and fashion portraits" showcased the same style in their early 20th century covers. The illustrations "which were done by top artists like George Wolfe Plank, Olive Tilton, Pierre Brissaud and Eduardo Garcia Benito "were color portraits showcasing (usu |

Oedipus the King - A Model TragedyAristotle, a Greek philosopher and polymath, defines and distinguishes in the "Poetics" what he believes are the most important components and criteria of a model tragedy. Sophocles is one of the ancient Greek tragedians whose plays have managed to survive until today. His drama, Oedipus the King – also known as Oedipus Rex, fits all Aristotle's requirements for a classic tragedy. The self-centered and short-tempered Oedipus is led to a doomed end by fate because of his selfish and egocentric attitudes. In Sophocles's play, the tragic hero is led to a dead end because of his own character and personality. Aristotle believes Sophocles has written the perfect plot, and all other elements of his play fulfill the Greek philosopher's definition of a tragedy. It is through Sophocles's plot, character, language, and also the way the play was performed on stage that we can understand what tragedians in the modern age need to improve to fit all Aristotle's different criteria for a trage |

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya AngelouMaya Angelou's "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," has been deemed one of the most controversial, yet influential autobiographical novels of all time. Although somewhat unappreciated by the general public, this work is held to be a classic work of literature despite its taboo themes and figurative language for its time period. The novel will leave a long lasting impression of Angelou that will evermore be embedded into the readers mind. Angelou's "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" has gained a tremendous amount of criticism for its disputable topics concerning Racism and prejudice, The American Dream, and its vulgar textual context. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is a story of pride and prejudice. It demonstrates how maintaining a stable character and possessing a strong passion for literature can help conquer racism and internal trauma. Living in the Deep South during the civil rights era, Angelou was aware that "black women were consigned to a particular place in the social order, not on |

The Behavior Theories of Freud and B.F. SkinnerWhen it comes to finding explanations to things like; why one thinks different than another person, or how does the way one lives in society shape their personality and does childhood experiences influence the way a person turns out to be as an adult? These questions have intrigued philosophers for centuries, but thankfully there were two individuals who understood human behavior. Their names were Sigmund Freud and Frederick Skinner, between the two of them they have contributed greatly to the psychology world (Crux, 2006). In this essay, I will compare how Freud and Skinner's approaches toward human behavior helped to answer some of life's mind boggling questions as well as highlight some of the main ideas of their theories. When it comes to Freud his psychoanalytic theories grew from his years of interactions with his clients whom were psychoanalysis. Psychodynamic theories embrace all the diverse theories descended from the work of Sigmund Freud, which focuses on unconscious men |

The Age of ReformationThe age of the Reformation in the 16th century witnessed the birth of new religions and the reforms of the old Catholic Church. Two prominent religious leaders of this period were Martin Luther of Germany and Henry VIII of France. They were similar in some ways, but different in others. While Luther and Henry both used political leverage and renounced the papacy, they differed in their motives. For Luther and Henry, just their religious appeal did not convert the masses; politics did. Martin Luther appealed to the German princes to implement his ideas. He wrote An Appeal to the Nobility of the German Nation, in which he accused the Roman Catholic Church of exploiting the Germans wealth. This appeal to German patriotism caused many otherwise apathetic German princes to convert to Lutheranism. Consequently, the princes' subjects converted to Lutheranism, too, and after the Peace of Augsburg, these conversions were lawfully enforced. Henry VIII in England also used his political power to set up the Church of England. He had the Parliament pass an Act in Restraint of Appeals – which forbade judicial appeals to the pope and making the stat |

Jane in The Yellow WallpaperCharlotte Perkins Gilman was a well-known, leading American role model for women, a novelist and sociologist, a lecturer for a social reform, as well as an insightful writer. "The Yellow Wallpaper"" is about a woman that suffers from a mental illness and is kept in a room with only a bed and her own thoughts, which ultimately lead to her mental downfall. In this short story, the author uses the yellow wallpaper as a prominent symbol to represent the web of restraints that affected so many women in that time era. Also, Gilman incorporates a significant amount of anthropomorphism that seems to give life to the illness as well as the wallpaper. Gilman builds the majority of this story on the yellow wallpaper that stands as a symbol for the many struggles that a women in that day and age had to deal with. While studying the wallpaper in a different light, Jane says, "the color is hideous enough, and unreliable enough, and |

Invisible Man - A Novel by Ralph EllisonIn Ralph Ellison's novel, "Invisible Man," the narrator is influenced by many. Although there are many acting on him, he becomes ambivalent to the two characters, Dr. Bledsoe and his grandfather. While toiling between which one he should follow, he finds himself in numerous situations. Finding himself in these sticky situations brought about a realization of who he really was, rescuing himself from his own believed invisibility. The central theme of the novel is the search for identity. As for individuality, "Invisible Man," it is a struggle through reality and illusion. He is also concerned with communal effort of African-American to define cultural identity. However, Ellison does not restrict himself to concerns of African-Americans because he believes that their culture is a disentangled part of American culture. Even though, Ellis |

Recommendations for CUTCO Cutlery CorporationIn 2007, CUTCO had profits of $197 million and has estimated revenues of $260 million in 2011. This provides CUTCO with a five-year average growth rate of 8%. At this rate, CUTCO's yearly revenue will be a mere $380 million by 2016 and by 2021, $560 million. This is quite distant from reaching CUTCO's profit objective of $500 million to $1 billion per year. Therefore, CUTCO must consider strategic options that will lead to substantial growth. Limitation of Retail Expansion CUTCO's current annual revenue is $260 million, which means it needs to generate an additional $740 million in annual revenues to reach its long-term goal. Each store, based on estimates from the pilot stores, is capable of achieving revenues up to $300,000. As CUTCO increases its prices by 5% every two years, its revenue would grow to $380,000. In order for CUTCO to make up the difference of $740 million in missing revenue, it would need to open 2,000 stores in the U.S. With an initial expenditure of $150,000 per |

Symbolism in Battle Royal by Ralph EllisonWriter Ralph Ellison, through the use of symbolism, often conveyed the realistic difficulties of being African American in a society monopolized by whites males. Ellison's short story, "Battle Royal" cleverly uses symbolism to illuminate the struggle for equality for African Americans. These distinct symbols include the blonde female dancer along with the American flag tattoo painted on her stomach, and the battle itself. The dancer is symbolic of America's distorted value system, the perception of African Americans seen by the white males. The dancers tattoo suggests American freedom, something that the African American society wants. And most significantly, the battle royal exemplifies the fight for civil rights and equality. The dancer, as a symbol in "Battle Royal," administers to Ellison's strong description of the struggling effort towards equality. She, the dancer, is allegorical of how little authority both African Americans and women have in a society lead by white mal |

Injustice in the Criminal Justice System"The purpose of the criminal justice system is to deliver justice for all, by convicting and punishing the guilty and helping them to stop offending, while protecting the innocent" (Collins par 1). It is meant to provide equal protection to all persons under the law and to fairly administer the law. To achieve this, the police and the courts "detect crime and bring it to justice" (par 1). The police do so by making arrests, patrolling, and performing criminal investigations in order to abrogate crime. The courts use acumen to interpret the law and declare who has broken it. Correctional institutions ameliorate lives by separating criminals from society's milieu. In many instances, the criminal justice system is said to favor some racial groups over others. Racial disparities in the criminal justice system exist in the rate of incarceration and in reporting hate crimes. In recent years, it seems as though the criminal justice system has reneged on its purpose. With |

Critical Review - Leviathan by Thomas HobbesIn Hobbes' work, "Leviathan," the reader is informed of his ideas and theories on the creation of a city-state in which its people are freed from the "state of nature." Hobbes' state closely follows the idea of the "bourgeois man," we can see evidence of this in the way he describes the roles of the citizens within his state. While looking at the way Hobbes' constructs his theories, we can look at the question of whether or not his bourgeois theories are a means for a sustainable and prosperous society. There are many scholars who have published their theories on whether or not Hobbes' bourgeois mentality would be a viable means of structuring a city, many of which point out the flaws of Hobbes' work, while others have a more supportive view on Hobbes' bourgeois theories. Those who are not in favor of Hobbes' bourgeois society, compare it closely to those societies that are built on the principles of capitalism, and the thought that such a society will inevitably collapse because of |

Questions and Responses on Shakespeare's OthelloQuestion 1. Othello is an "outsider" in a very sophisticated society. What elements of class and race appear in the play? How confident is Othello that he can be accepted by this elitist society? Does he truly believe that he is "worthy" of Desdemona's love? Could a lack of self-confidence contribute to his believing Iago's lies about Desdemona? Response Othello is a Moor, but he has an extreme self-confidence, because he is a very successful warrior. The military identity of him is important and gives him a great confidence. This is what makes him acceptable by elite society, because he is really a great soldier. Iago always insults Othello because of his being Moor: "If she had been blest, she would never loved the Moor" (Act II, Scene I). Desdemona's father Brabantio also gets extremely sad about his daughter's escape to Moor. He blames Othello for using magic which is result of racial stereotyping: "Are we turn'd Turks, and to ourselves do th |

United Nations Development Action Framework (UNDAF)The United Nations Development Action Framework (UNDAF) 2013-2017 reflects the work of all United Nations (UN) entities working in India. It has been developed in partnership with the Planning Commission as the nodal partner from the Government of India (GoI); prepared in collaboration with government agencies, civil society, donors and other key development partners. The design of the UNDAF document has evolved out of strategic discussions - both within the UN and with partners - to determine how the UN System in India is best suited to support the development goals of the country. In order to better reflect the UN's contribution to India's development (no longer to qualify as assistance in view of India's middle income country status), the UNDAF 2013-2017 has been renamed as UN Development Action Framework. The UNDAF 2013-2017 for India is harmonised with the Twelfth Five Year Plan of the GoI. The UN Country Team (UNCT), led by the UN Resident Coordinator (UNRC) decided that a compl |

Expansionism - Thomas Jefferson and James K. PolkPresidents Thomas Jefferson and James K. Polk both strengthened the United States as a result of their expansionist foreign policies. Jefferson's foreign policy reflected his feelings for France and resulted in the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Throughout the 1840's, Polk pushed for the annexation of Texas, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and the establishment of the Oregon Territory. While not of all of these policies and treaties had immediate effects, almost of all of them had a long term effect on the United States. These expansionist policies and actions by Thomas Jefferson and James K. Polk strengthened the United States economically and in regard to domestic and foreign issues. The expansion of the United States made the nation much stronger economically. The Louisiana Purchase, negotiated by Jefferson, opened up many new economic opportunities for the United States. New Orleans was part of the territory, and as a result the Mississippi River was opened up for trade indefinitely. This |

Educational PsychologyIntroduction The study of Educational Psychology pairs the science of psychology to educational practices and provides teachers with evidence-based knowledge to support their day-to-day decision making in the classroom (PowerPoint, Mullin). Therefore, it is no surprise that many educational psychologists focus their research and understanding on learning theories about how the human brain processes and stores new information. Learning incorporates 3 critical components; permanent, change, and experience. When written in a sentence together, learning is any relatively permanent change in an organism that results from experience (PowerPoint, Mullin). One domain of learning theories named behavioral learning theories has 2 categories, classical conditioning and operant conditioning. Classical conditioning is widely used in modern psychology in the areas of neuroscience and cognitive science, and is the topic of this paper henceforward. Faulkner and A Rose for EmilyRenowned writer named William Faulkner once said, "The problems of the human heart in conflict with itself which alone can make good writing because only that is worth writing about, worth the agony and the sweat."" A conflict can be within the character himself, his ambitions, morals, or between what is right and wrong. In the short story, "A Rose for Emily"," a young lady has a terrible life due to a conflict of not being able to get over the past. This internal conflict can be seen through her two main conflicts, which are against the society who does not understand her, and a conflict against her self over the theme of love. Emily's conflicts began when her father died. At first, she cried for days and denied his death, saying, "He's not dead, and rejecting condolences" (par. 27). She hid in her house for a few months and, "when the community began to see her again, her hair was cut short, making her look like a girl, with a vague resemblance to those angels in colored church wind |

Northern Ireland and the Good Friday AgreementDiplomacy does not happen overnight, and the true tale of hardship and bickering over Northern Ireland is proof of that. Ireland and England failed to agree on who held the power of Northern Ireland for over 30 years until the Good Friday Agreement, a form of diplomacy between the countries, took place. Before that time, many soldiers and innocent citizens of Northern Ireland lost their lives. Religious fights broke out between Catholic and Protestant residents. Political figures from countries like Wales and the United States came together to help put an end to the bitter relations of the European countries (Delaney). After many years of hard feelings and failed attempts at bringing peace to Ireland and England, the countries came together to try to work things out. Slowly, Northern Ireland created its own identity, and the troubles started to fade away. The troubles refer to the age-old disputes over the control of Northern Ireland. Even though the arguments lasted for several cent |
