ObamaCare - A Step in the Right Direction

Throughout history, there has been an uncertainty of how to provide quality health care that the average low-income person can afford. With the economy in such instability, the need is growing as fast as the cost in the healthcare system. In an effort to keep up, a new law has recently been passed introducing a set of guidelines effectively changing the entire system of healthcare as we know it. As with any change there has been great debate over whether the reform is as good in practice as in theory. Obama has created a health care plan to provide affordable health insurance for all Americans and to reduce the health care spending (Obamacarefacts.com). In order to understand the purpose of health care reform we first have to understand the current healthcare system and how it began. According to staysmartstayhealthy.com current health care was established during the 1920's and at that time the cost of health care was much lower because the providers weren't as educated about medicine

Overview of Legal Contracts

The legal environment of business in The United States is such that any business entity can invest full trust and confidence in the legal system to not only enforce the law, but facilitate it as well. It is this confidence in our judicial system that allows for an economy to flourish. In order to achieve the successful execution of business transactions, there must be a functioning set of rules that hold parties accountable for their actions. In other words, there must be consequences for those who violate our laws, and there must be an assurance from our government that these laws will be enforced. Contracts are a vital part of both domestic, and international business transactions. A contract is a legally binding agreement between two or more parties who agree to perfor

The Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll

The poem I chose for this assignment is "The Jabberwocky," by Lewis Carroll. According to The Broadview Anthology of British Literature, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, whose pen-name was Lewis Carroll was a very well-known author during the Victorian Era. He was born in 1832 and was the third of eleven children. He and his siblings were mostly home schooled so Dodgson helped keep himself and his siblings entertained with stories and drawings he contributed to a family magazine. Dodgson enjoyed making up stories for children, three such children being Alice Liddell and her sisters, which is whom "Alice in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking Glass" were created for. After a very brief life spent enchanting children and their parents with fantastical tales about scary Jabberwocky's and disappearing cats, Carroll succumbed to bronchitis in 1898 (858-859). "The Jabberwocky," which was written in 1872, and is one of Carroll's most well-known works, is about a boy whose fat

Differentiating the Five Senses

The communication between Central Nervous System (CNS) and the external environment is influenced by the sensory receptors which help maintain homeostasis. These receptor cells are formed as dendrites at the distal of sensory neurons specifically designed for receiving certain kind of stimuli. The sense organs consists of epithelial cells and tissues connecting to the sensory neurons, which are comprised of receptor cells with functions of special senses e.g. vision, hearing, smell, taste and touch. Based on the stimulus locations these sensory receptor cells can be identified in three different regions in the body as exteroceptors, interoceptors, proprioceptors. The exteroceptor are the ones mostly located in the outer surface of the body (e.g. skin, eyes, oral cavity, nose and ears), and they are sensitive to external stimuli. (Pomfrett, 2009) Basic awareness develops from our body's ability to touch, feel and maintain equilibrium. The receptors that respond to external stim

Aral Sea in Central Asia

The Aral Sea is located in Central Asia and was once considered the fourth largest lake on the planet. By 2007, it had diminished to 10 percent its original size. The sea has dried up into three major lakes and two distinct bodies of water: the Small Aral (north) and the Large Aral (south). The Soviet Union's irrigation projects were a big part of the reason as to why the water started shrinking. The Soviet Union hid the sea's downfall up until about 1985. Finally an attempt was made to make things better when a dam was constructed in 2005. This dam helped the northernmost lake expand and drop significantly in salinity. The extreme loss of fish species, the lost connection to major ports for shipping, and significant health problems are just a few examples of how the rapidly shrinking waters of the Aral Sea have caused an extreme amount of turmoil. The Aral Sea is located right in-between Kazakhstan in the north and Karakalpakstan, an independent region of Uzbekistan, in the south. It

The Crisis of Malnutrition in Bolivia

Although in recent years there has been a noticeable improvement in the prevalence of malnutrition, it is still a serious issue in many developing countries. As of 2013, malnutrition affects on average 32.5% of the children younger than 5 in developing countries, which is about everyone out of three children. On a geographical scale, Asia holds the highest rate of malnutrition with a staggering 70%, while Africa has 26% and Latin America only 4%. According to the World Health Organization, acute malnutrition is defined by a very low weight for height (below -3z scores of the median WHO growth standards), by visible severe wasting, or by the presence of nutritional edema. While the direct causes of chronic child malnutrition are hard to pinpoint, the two most common causes are the lack of access to nutrients and a high disease exposure among the population at hand. Annually malnourishment causes 5 million infant/child deaths per year. In many cases, the lack of vital nutrients can s

Steroids and Performance-Enhancing Drugs

Introduction Athletes have been taking performance-enhancing drugs in different forms for centuries; the furthest dated supplement used to increase performance was used in Ancient Greece, when they would ingest doop with the hopes of increasing their performance and becoming some of the first Olympic champions. Since then, the development of Performance-enhancing drugs has hit a rapid increase and massive amounts of more powerful drugs have been produced. Athletes of different sports, gender and age use these drugs all over the world. Many different sporting organizations are strongly involved in the fight against them and the fight to someday, eradicate their use from the sporting world as a whole, but why? This extended research essay will look at the countering arguments over whether the ban on performance-enhancing drugs should remain in place or whether it would be a benefit to the sporting community as a whole if this prohibition were lifted in sporting associations. Technology and Teacher Education

The field of educational technology has links that go back for almost a hundred years, at least to the museum movement in the early part of the 20th century. The museum movement and the success of training and development work during the two world wars were major factors in the development of the field. Educational technology flourished in the 1950's and continues to play an important role in many colleges of education. The particular sub-discipline of educational technology we will explore in this paper does not have a long history. Information technology and teacher education (ITTE) is now a scholarly and professional discipline, but it has only recently become so. During the 1970s and early 1980s, while most educational technology programs continued to emphasize more traditional concepts and skills such as the systematic design and development of instructional materials, a separate group of graduate programs emerged that provided some of the foundations for ITTE. These programs, u

Considerations of Ethics in Research - Bystander Apathy

Abstract This paper explores the concept and nature of ethics when researching bystander apathy, the social phenomena where individuals observe a crisis situation and yet do not offer assistance. To better understand this occurrence, researchers attempted to observe the reaction of college students in such a situation. Presented with a psychosocial experiment that involved deception and the appearance of physical harm to participants, questions about the ethical validity of the research must be weighed and considered. In addition to evaluating the role of the American Psychological Association (APA)'s Ethics Code for experiments, this paper seeks to qualify whether research gains initially made under the likes of Darley and Latane (1968) were in any way aided by the topical research experiment. Through the investigation of the APA's Ethics Code, this paper suggests that such deception is incongruent with the necessary ethical standards of scientific research and the ultimate output of

Living Life as a Computer Hacker

The term "hacker" may lead us to think of a person who lives, sleeps, and breathes computers; someone who can crack any code, infiltrate into any system, and disable a nuclear launch to wipe out mankind from their bedroom. However, while most of this is true (maybe not the whole saving mankind part) the day of a developer is more than just indulging ones mind in code while sipping coffee with their legs on their desk, it consists of conversing with team members through emails, holding daily meetings, and being able to convey thoughts and ideas in a clear and concise way through any medium. Significance of Clear Communication The difference between an "okay" developer and an "awesome" developer" is not the amount of programming languages they understand, not even whether they personally prefer to program in C or C++ for that matter. Simply put, it's whether they can convey their ideas in a clear and concise way, by writing accurate, usable and readable technical specifications and documentation. Like with

Negative Behaviors in The Tempest

Throughout William Shakespeare's play, "The Tempest," the concept of being civilized is a major focus for the audience. By depicting a hypocritical society, the play suggests that people who believe they are the most civilized are sometimes not. Created by man's definition of civilization, some of the pitfalls in this play are the deceiving actions of Antonio, and Prospero's plot for revenge. The irony in this play is that the uncivilized people are pretending to be civilized, and vice versa. Shakespeare's play teaches the audience that it is easy to be fooled by power, as it is mistaken with the true definition of being civilized. Perhaps, the nature of being civilized is enclosed by a simple act of kindness, similar to Prospero's decision to quit his magic for the sake of sympathy for his enemies. Looking at the fine line between those who are civilized and those who are not, some of the characters in this play assume that they are better than others. For instance, Prospero treats

Sydeny Carton in A Tale Of Two Cities

In the novel "A Tale of Two Cities," by Charles Dickens, Sydney Carton is an important character to the evolution of the story. Throughout the novel, there are many situations where characters express feelings towards each other. Sydney Carton is by far the most expressive in the novel. Carton expresses his care for Lucie when he goes to her house and tells her personally how he loves her, When he asks to be a friend of the Manettes and to be a regular house guest and lastly when Carton gives his life by taking Charles Darnay's place in prison and being executed. This makes Sydney Carton the most expressive character in the novel and a hero. Without the role of Carton the novel would not be the same. The first way where Carton expresses his feelings is when, after the trial, when Lucie is being pursued by suitors, he had gone to her house frequently and paced outside of it. One night he had decided to go in and speak with Lucie personally. Once in there and they begin talking, he sa

The people are responsible for the choices they make. Likewise, in Herman Melville's classic novel "Moby Dick" (1851), Captain Ahab is responsible for his very own demise because the decisions he has made. The Jamestown Settlement

The village of Jamestown became the first permanent English Colony within North America in May 1607. Fueled by global economic, religious, and social factors, the colony represented England's emergence into the developing European landscape of expansion and conquest. The Virginia Company entrepreneured the venture upon royal charter by King James I in April 1606. In December 1606, three ships – Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery – with 105 men left England. Four months later, in April 1607, they reached the Chesapeake Bay and two weeks of exploration led to the final landing at Jamestown. Jamestown Settlement seeks to convey the aforementioned information to visitors via several mediums: living history, displays, and film. The entry point is the Visitor's Center, containing traditional displays and exhibitions, as well as an introductory video, 1607: A Nation Takes Root. Most significantly, is the living history portion consisting of the James Fort, Powhatan Indian v

Ronald Reagan's Top Four Presidential Achievements

As President of the United States, Ronald Reagan had four major achievements that defined his presidency. These achievements made his presidency one of the best in US history. He pressed congress to lower taxes. Taxes have always been a major part in American history. America has had taxation dating back to the colonial era. Most would argue unfair taxes are what started the Revolutionary War. During the early 1980s, income tax was set at 50% for anyone making over $5,720 a year. Reagan realized this was devastating to the American economy, so he called for a change. Reagan accomplished lowering taxes this by pressuring congress to pass an act known as the Tax Reform Act of 1986. This act alone lowered the top income tax from 50% to 28%. The bottom tax rate was raised form 11% to 15%. The Tax Reform of 1986 was the first time in American tax history that both the top and bottom rate were increased at the same time (BookCaps, Chapter 4). This act eliminated fifteen levels of income

Economic Indicators of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP)

Question Gross Domestic Product is one of the most significant economic indicators in the economy. Why? Response The state of an economy is anything but static. It is an ever-changing, whirlwind phenomenon with long inputted variables within a country's economic landscape that could simply change with a single stroke of the pen. Some of these variables, when inserted into their respective economic equation, lead to indicators to can help predict the state of the economy and where it could be headed. None of these are any more important than the economic indicator of Gross Domestic Product. Gross Domestic Product, or GDP, is defined as "the monetary value of all the finished goods and services produced within a country's borders in a specific time period" (Gross Domestic Product – GDP). Simply put, as Ryan Barnes wrote, "GDP is the godfather of the indicator world" (Barnes. Economic Indicators: Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Gross Domestic Product can be

The company has a constant concept of offering inexpensive furniture. In order to attract more customers and present an ideal home environment

Example Investment Portfolio

Setting Goals For the purpose of this paper, we were given an imaginary $100,000 to develop an investment portfolio. With that being said, the construction of my portfolio began with identifying my investment goals. Investment goals are the financial objectives that one wishes to achieve through investing. When planning my portfolio, I have decided that capital appreciation and planning for retirement is my ultimate goal. My rationale behind this is that I am in my mid-20s, so planning ahead for retirement is a must. I have no children or extraordinary expenses, so the need for current income isn't that important. I have a steady stream of income. This gives me the ability to endure more risk. Bear in mind, I am completely aware that these factors could change and that of course, would lead to me rethink my portfolio strategy. Portfolio Construction The next step is to develop an asset allocation scheme. This involves dividing your portfolio into various asset classes. Asset allocat

Aristotle and Machiavelli - Political Philosophy

Aristotle and Niccolo Machiavelli agree that human nature predisposes men to serve their own interests, and that we need government to control our innate desires, and yet the two disagree on the origin of government and its purpose. Aristotle argues that man is political by nature due to speech. Through speech, men develop a common moral determination for what is just and unjust, and naturally form political societies in the acquisition of virtue. Although Aristotle's government operates in the pursuit of human excellence, it is based on an optimistic notion, that men will choose and continue to seek moral advancement. Machiavelli adopts a more practical perspective not on the moral capability of men, but on the role morality will actually play in daily life. Machiavelli argues that extraordinary men founded political societies, and that any government's primary purpose should be to preserve itself. In his book "Politics," Aristotle begins his work by outlining his ideas concerning

Project Planning and Communication Management

Communication Management Communication is the most important aspect involving the project manager and how the evaluation results to both the management and the customer. Communication management presents the performance or presentation evaluation measures for the schedule, costs, budget, role, issues, milestones, documents, and risks pertaining to the project as well as including the project communication plan. User involvement, executive management and a clear statement of the requirements of a project are the main influential factors relating to the success of communication management. When referring to communication, talking is always considered but it also involves listening. Various tracking tools can be used to monitor the project status effectively. There are many ways that a project manager can communicate the performance evaluation results to management and customers. "Effective communication includes a well-designed infrastructure and the processes, messages, and docum

Age Discrimination in the Workplace

What started out as the dream solution for a financial crisis in the now Shelby County School District in Memphis, TN, turned out to be a nightmare for the more seasoned or older teachers. When Bill and Melinda Gates donated money geared towards improving teaching and learning in Memphis, TN, the superintendent used it as a platform to force retirement or terminate teachers who were within the age of retirement. The idea was to get rid those teachers that made the most money so newer teachers could be hired at two for the salary of one. Memphis adopted a new system for evaluating teachers and the board policy stated that for the first year, it would be used as a tool for teacher improvement and no teacher would be terminated the first year of the implementation on the new process. Needless to say, several principals used this as a tool to remove certain individuals from their faculty in spite of not creating improvement plans and offering assistance to those who needed help. As a 35-year teacher, my mother was appalled when she received notification that her principal had recommended she not be reelected for hire for the upcoming year. His reasons

The Life of Paul Revere

My research paper is on Paul Revere and will detail why he is famous, his role in the American Revolution, interesting facts on Mr. Revere, and similarities between Mr. Revere and my dad. Paul Revere was born on January 1, 1735 in Boston, Massachusetts and died on May 10, 1818 in Boston, Massachusetts. He is most famous for riding from Boston to Lexington on horseback in the middle of the night to warn fellow colonial patriots (including John Hancock and Samuel Adams) that the British army was advancing. This ride occurred just before the battles of Lexington and Concord and included Paul Revere and William Dawes initially, and then was later joined by Samuel Prescott. He did not shout the phrase he is most noted for, "The British are coming!" He depended on secrecy because the countryside was filled with British army patrols and many of the colonies still were loyal to the British. His actual warning was "The Regulars
