Contradictions Among the Gods - The Odyssey

In Homer's The Odyssey, hospitality is a major theme in regards to the Greek culture. It was deemed ill mannered for one to greet their guest without proper meal before inquiring further. Gods were the root to every action or consequence; one of the main reasons behind mortals being overly accommodating is due to the mischievous ways of the gods. It was sometimes questioned whether or not the stranger was perhaps a god in disguise, and if not treated accordingly, one would be punished. Homer makes this theme of conviviality a crucial part of characterization, however, slight contradictions within the epic make us question this motif. Having an uninvited stranger in your home is not something that is joyously welcome, usually. However, Homer takes the phrase "make yourself at home " to another level. When the character Telemachus lands his ship in Lacedaemon to visit Menelaus we witness this overzealous hospitality. "When they had feasted their eyes on the sight, they went and bathed

The Portrayal of Asians in American Theatre

Yellow-Faced Coolies and Exotic Geisha: The Portrayal of Asians in American Theatre and Their Reactions Since the inception of theatre, playwrights have used the stage to portray races different from their own, and from the majority of their audience. In the case of American theatre, these portrayals were usually done with a predominately, if not all, white cast. To get around this, various techniques such as black-face, yellow-face, and red-face were used to portray characters such as Africans, Asians, and American Indians. Portraying cultures they knew nothing about, many playwrights relied on stereotypes and stock character types that were widely used and accepted by the public. These characters were almost never an accurate portrayal of the people they were being used to represent. Over time, many of these techniques and stereotypes have disappeared from mainstream theatre due to a growing awareness of how offensive they can be to people of the depicted race. One group, however, t

Great American Writer - Jack London

There is no questioning Jack London's unique writing style that is hardly matched by authors; a piece written by London stands out in a way that restricts people from being able to ask if London wrote the book (Cooper 253). The reader can clearly depict London's works out just by the general style shared between books (Cooper 253). Not all of London's works made the greatest hit's list; in fact, a few of his books are described as terrible, but even in these novels a reader may stumble upon a sliver of vibrant rays of life (Mencken 257). These little reminders to prove London left something other than a lust for wealth in his writings (Sinclair 257). However, the greed was a present characteristic behind the famed author; the avarice was delicately placed in his soul as a result of London's early taste of financial and social predicament (Mencken 258). The deadly concoction of greed and alcohol committed London to a life of getting half-finished books published and writing at a consi

Successful Enterpreneurship

To be successful, you must have an interest that you can carry out or see all the way through. It becomes easier to maintain momentum or persevere through tough times when you're doing something you love and have a strong passion for. It is through that particular interest or passion in which you will devise a vision statement that directly correlates. "This vision must be strong enough that he/she can communicate it to investors and employees" - smallbusiness.chron.com. Although passion and a clear vision goes a long way in determining the success or failure of your business, it remains imperative to have the requisite skill to carry out that vision. When starting out, employees will be scarce; ultimately fo

German and English Communication

"Writing and reading decrease our sense of isolation. They deepen and widen and expand our sense of life: they feed the soul." - Lamott Being able to communicate with the surrounding world is probably one of the most important components to life. Not being able to communicate or having limited communication is very straining on anyone and no one wants to deal with it. As children, everyone had a tough time communicating because everyone was just learning how to use all kinds of forms of communication. Usually, over time, everyone slowly becomes masters of their chosen form of communication, since these skills are used every day, but I did not get the chance to take that time to master my original form of communication. Even though, as a kid, I did not get the chance to use my native language as often as most people do I did get the chance to learn English instead. I did get the chance to learn German later on in life, but it all started with learning English. If one were t

Overcoming Slavery - Chains

When I first began reading the book "Chains" by Laurie Halse Anderson I was not very interested, it was slow going and I had a difficult time getting into the story. However I suddenly got a spark of inspiration. This book began to pull me in and I would wake up excited to see what would happen next. The book begins with a girl named Isabel who lives on a farm with her little sister, Ruth. The two girls are slaves for a woman who passes away, their mother who visits from time to time also passes away. So after the death of their owner they are sent away on a cramped and dirty ship. When the ship docks the girls step off only to be sold again to a snooty woman named Lady Seymour, and her husband Elihu. Lady Seymour and her husband already had a slave but were in need of more. After they were sold they were immediately put to work. When Isabel arrived in America she met a boy with a red hat named Curzon. Curzon escorted her to the water pump when she was told to fetch water,

Jonathan Edwards and the Great Awakening

The Great Awakening was a religious revival in the 1730s and 1740s. It was particularly influential in the New England colonies, and sparked renewed religious activity in America. Many preachers were involved, including George Whitefield, and Jonathan Edwards, who preached the famous sermon, "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God " (1741). Through Jonathan Edwards's sermon "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God," Edwards offers a very harsh interpretation to humankind. Meanwhile through a man named George Whitefield, Anglicization was expanding beyond the magnitude Jonathan Edwards could ever truly ascertain. Harry S. Stout, in his writing "American Awakener " depicts an upcoming public figure in Anglicization, George Whitefield as using "new techniques of promotion and publicity as it did a reawakened religious sentiments among colonial men and women. " (pg 90) Jonathan Edwards enga

Indonesia's Economic Decline

How did Indonesia go from a production powerhouse, with economic capabilities equal with Japan and China, to the dilapidated, corrupt, overpopulated debt hole that it is now? Indonesia was on the rise in the mid 1960's. From 1966 to 1969, inflation lowered from 660% to 19%. In 1982, foreign investments were high, as were expectations (14). Indonesia was streamlining its budget by 1982, spending the newly saved money on education (25). But the decline was beginning by 1983, when Indonesia was forced to suspend projects totaling 26 billion, as well as freezing government wages (39, 40, 42). Currently, Indonesia is a developing country, full of corruption and poverty. What happened in the middle to bring down such a high economic trajectory? Indonesia's abrupt economic decline was due to their failure of government leadership. A major contributor to the economic decline of Indonesia were the excessive government subsidies that the government placed on valuable resources. In 81', only 15%

Reconstuction of the South

The reconstruction era was a period after the Civil War that was critical in providing the defeated southern states with a Union led government in order to reconstruct the South immediately. There were a few different approaches to the process of reconstruction by President Abraham Lincoln, President Andrew Johnson, and Congress. Presidents Lincoln and Johnson both had similar approaches to reconstruction, but they also had some opposing views as well. One of the major differences in the two was that Johnson opposed many of the civil rights granted to the freed African Americans, like the fourteenth amendment. This probably had something to do with the fact that Andrew Johnson was originally Governor of the southern state of Tennessee, even though that state seceded from the confederacy. He still had some of the southern views of African Americans. President Abraham Lincoln's plan for reconstruction started with his Proclamation of Amnesty and Reconstruction in 1863. This plan required at least

Looking Out My Window

There I was, sipping a cup of tea with mint and lots of sugar and admiring the rain through my small window. The winter session was just around the corner and my thoughts took me to a place filled with nostalgic memories of my family, which led to tears flowing down my face. The rain and my tears started falling concurrently while a beautiful picture of my family running and smiling started forming in my mind. I can still hear my mom calling my name, "Bilal come, come and play,"" while she and my siblings played in the courtyard. I can still remember long walks with my father from the beach to our house talking about business. Everyone has a different definition of home but for me, Home is a place where my Lebanese soul is, surrounded by love and comfort, a place where I have created many special memories with my family and loved ones. Home, for me, isn't just walls and doors. Home, for me is where my loved ones are. The people that know me inside out and will give up their life for me

The American Colonization Society

Around 1787, the presence of free blacks was seen as a threat to Americans. Efforts were made by both whites" and blacks" to find an alternative home for free blacks. Some believed that blacks could never be "fully integrated into American society ", and some in America fell that blacks could only be seen as equal "human beings " if they moved out of America. This idea had been in the mines of people since "1714 [to remove blacks] to territory beyond the limits of the United Stated or to an unsettled area of public land ". (The Formation of The America Colonization Society p 209) Thomas Jefferson who advocated for the colonization of blacks from the year 1773, replied in 1811, according to Henry Noble to Ann Mifflin's proposition to make a settlement of colored people on the west coast of Africa. Thomas Jefferson said "the most desirable measure which could be adopted for gradually drawing off this part of our population, most advantageously for themselves as

Music Leading to Change

The 1960's represented a time of change in America. One of the main contributors to this change in America was a development of a new style of music. During this time, bands like The Beatles and Rolling Stones began to sing about sex, drugs, and peace, which had not previously been done before. Because of these new lyrics, the younger generation of people began to form a movement where unity, togetherness, and rebellion against "the man " became of utmost importance. During the 1960's, The Beatles created a movement amongst young Americans while The Rolling Stones created a darker and grittier image that even went as far as frightening parents. During the 1960's, America was in the middle of a war against Vietnam. The military used tactics such as chemical and guerilla warfare to assault people in Vietnam. Many people throughout the United States did not agree with the tactics taken by the military and began to voice their opinions. The Beatles were becoming extremely popular during

Suffering and Redemption

Every good story has a challenge its characters must overcome. Conflicts can be man struggling against his circumstances, another man, or himself. Fyodor Dostoyevsky endured many hardships in his lifetime, and illustrated the lessons he learned through his novel "Crime and Punishment." In the book, nearly every character has a problem contributing to the story line. Dostoyevsky blends together many different conflicts to argue suffering is a necessary part of a Christian's sanctification. Everyone will experience some kind of suffering, and suffering causes people to seek a source of hope. Suffering is indeed necessary to a Christian's sanctification, but it does not lead people to redemption unless they have accepted Christ's saving work on the cross. Many people, both Christian and non-Christian, may believe the easiest life is the best life. However, suffering forces non-Christians to think deeply about their world views and even look for truth from a higher power. On the other ha

The Industrial Revolution in England

The Industrial Revolution in England can be termed a "revolution" because of the far reaching changes that accompanied it. These changes affected the social, economic and political affairs of Britain. However, it must be noted that this revolution could have only occurred with the aid of internal factors which were factors within Britain and external factors which came from the Atlantic economy. The Agrarian Revolution was the first internal factor. It took place between 1760 and 1830 in the countryside. The previous old wasteful open-field system of cultivation gave way to enclosures. Improved methods of agriculture were introduced as Rickard and Hyma stated, "There were improved methods of land cultivation, new crops, increased knowledge of fertilizing, crop rotation and diversification. These improved methods meant that less labour was needed on the farms and thus it led to freed labour migrating to the towns to become involved in the Industrial Revolution as Deane and Cole stated,

Laura Wingfield and Temple Grandin

Mosaics, Glass Shells, and the Power of Introversion Both Laura, a fictional character in the play, The Glass Menagerie, and Temple Grandin, the author of "Genius May Be an Abnormality: Educating Students with Asperger's Syndrome", can be categorized as introverts: Grandin, labeled with autism, and Laura, with "inferiority complex", as Jim calls it. Both abnormalities are analogous in the sense that both involve awkward social skills and self doubt, and a passion, or genius in one single thing. Laura, like children with autism, is crippled, she is "abnormal" to her society, and she is afraid of her own abnormality. While Amanda and Tom, like the parents of autistic children, polished Laura's little glass shell, Jim is the mentor that helps Laura embrace her true passion, and Jim symbolizes the breaking of her horn, the hammer that shatters her fragile cocoon of glass. In this way, Temple Grandin and Laura are similar in their path of discovering thems

Catcher in the Rye - Analyzing Holden

Our world is a vastly populated planted filled with different ideas and perspectives. In the novel, "The Catcher In The Rye", Holden Caulfield views life in a peculiar and unique way contrary to how most of us see it. He is an orange in a basket of apples. What he does and what he thinks makes up his character; you truly have to scrutinize deep into his brain to really understand and interpret how he feels towards certain things. He views people differently and behaves peculiarly. He also isolates himself for self-protection. "Phoniness", one of Holden's favorite concepts, is used throughout the novel to describe many different things. He uses phoniness to describe the hypocrisy and superficiality of the world around him. In one example he refers to his schoolwork as phony, which is only an excuse to isolate himself away from i

Cerebral Palsy - Types and Symptoms

Introduction Cerebral Palsy is a form of paralysis (a motor function disorder) that is produced through an unending, non-developing prenatal brain deficiency or brain injury occurring before, during, or after birth. "Cerebral" applies to the brain and "Palsy" applies to the scarcity of muscular motion. This term refers to non-progressive, non-contagious motor conditions that limit and impair the movement, balance, and posture of one's body. It is important to remember that it is not life-threatening; although cerebral palsy may have an overwhelming effect upon people affected with it, as well as, their family. Between 400,000 and 800,000 Americans have cerebral palsy; however, it is probable that not more than two people are capable of experiencing the same difficulties. It does not always cause profound disabilities. For that reason, there are several diverse treatments. Highly recommended is physical therapy-on its own or combined with various therapies-

The Matrix and The Allegory of the Cave

Introduction In medieval thinking, the allegory used as a literary device- was accepted as having a reality underlying rhetorical or fictional uses. The allegory was as true as the facts of surface appearances. This figure of rhetoric has been widely used throughout the histories of all forms of art; a major reason for this is its immense power to illustrate complex ideas and concepts in ways that are easily digestible and tangible to viewers, readers, or listeners. It conveys a hidden message through symbolic figures, actions, imagery, and events; these features should be taken into consideration when interpreting allegorical writings in order to unravel the meaning hidden underneath the surface. Thus, it could be said that an allegory is an extended metaphor. One of the best known examples is Platos Allegory of the Cave, included in his acclaimed book The Republic. The aim of this paper is to explore the analogies found between the text aforementioned and The Matrix, and analyze the

Unlikable Jack in Lord of the Flies

Throughout the novel, "Lord of the Flies," William Golding uses a variety of methods to create dislike for Jack. From the description of Jack's arrival on the island, it is evident that he is going to be a dangerous character throughout the novel. The creature' stepping onto the sand is "dark" and "fumbling along." Golding's use of language creates a strong first impression. By describing the choir as dark, it establishes an evil presence on the island which evolves as the novel progresses. Also, from the way the boys are portrayed to be 'fumbling' along the beach, I can infer that adversity will play a substantial role in Jack's ascent to sovereignty. Additionally, the group of boys being described as a ˜creature' foreshadows a beast existing on the island. As a result of Jack's introduction as ˜the boy who controlled them' with ˜red hair', the reader receives a vivid interpretation of his domineering influence upon the choir, which in later events will grow int

Life's Lessons - Trials and Tribulations

Does reminiscing on one's past transform a person? Can a person look at the past of others and discover new things about themselves? James Baldwin's short story, "Sonny's Blues,"" is more than a tale of a younger brother's struggle, but one of self-discovery. Self-reflecting on previous encounters with his mom, and younger brother, Baldwin's eyes are opened to the past hurts, struggles, and anger he experienced. Sonny's Blues is not merely the story of the narrator's experience; it is the tale of his inner transformation and spiritual growth which his earlier experiences of death and loss have motivated. Can ignorance be bliss, "I couldn't believe it: but what I mean by that is that I couldn't find any room for it anywhere inside me. I had kept it outside me for a long time. I hadn't wanted to know. I had had suspicions, but I didn't name them; I kept putting them away. "(Kennedy and Gioia 58). Having just read about his brother's arrest for Heroin use, Baldwin confronts his suspicion

History of the African American Diaspora

Between 650 CE and the mid-1500s, slaves were common in Europe and Asia, spreading through trans-Saharan and Islamic-run trade routes. Africans owned other Africans from different tribes, and people from all races, including whites, were enslaved. There were varying degrees of attitudes, treatment and racism during this time. Some slaves were treated as equals, others were considered inferior. It was not until during the transatlantic slave trade, which emerged in 1800s, that most Europeans, Africans and Americans began treating their slaves as property. Expanding European empires in the New World and recent maritime innovations during the mid 1500s led to imperial superiority and a need for cheap exploitation of labor. Because Africans were both accessible and used to the tropical climate, they became the staple for American slave labor. Therefore, the transatlantic slave trade, as well as additional influential people and literature, developed an anti-black ideology across the Americ
