The Unchangeable Nature of Men

According to Plato, by nature, human is a political animal. Regardless of time, culture and geography, human beings exhibit a strong political nature that constitutes their existence. This behavior seems embedded in the human DNA and seems to last as long as humanity is in existence. Plato's belief that under any circumstances, human beings will always be political by nature has been proved right until now and will continue to be a fact in the generations to come. The very nature that keeps humanity striving is the same reason that makes human beings political. Human beings are among the species that rely on social organization in order to survive. Throughout history, humanity has always survived due to strong and complex organizations such as civilizations, nations, tribes and clans. It is this system that allowed human beings to survive and continue through generations. The only way human beings have been conquering the challenges of nature is through uniting as organizations and sy

Net Neutrality in the United States

Introduction Earlier this year, on the 15th of May, Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Tom Wheeler proposed a set of rules that would give Internet Service Providers (ISP's) an outrageous amount of content control. The proposal would essentially create two separate lanes of internet traffic, fast and slow. People will be able to pay for preferential treatment. Big businesses such as Netflix and Google will be able to pay the premium for the fast lane and we could be left in the dust. So what exactly is net neutrality? Net neutrality is the basic fundamental characteristic of the open internet architecture. It is the idea that all information transmitted over the Internet should be treated equally by ISP's at all points of their networks. This previously essential characteristic of the Internet is now under the threat from ISP's like Verizon and Comcast looking to further strengthen their monopolistic businesses. This long report will attempt to explain why net neutrality

Sharks - Essential for a Balanced Ecosystem

Sharks have persisted on Earth for nearly 400 million years and are one of the oldest animal groups on the planet. Today, there are currently 100 million, or even more, sharks being killed every year. The main cause of this disturbing decline in sharks is overfishing, and while they are on the top of the marine food chain, their absence would cause disastrous effects in marine life, and even a global disturbance. There are currently 100 million or more sharks killed every year, done especially for their valuable fins that are used in soups, which are to be considered as a sign of wealth since they are so expensive. The fin has become the most valuable part of a shark., and a serving of shark fin soup can sell for up to $100. Fishers have the ungraciousness t

Earthquakes and Volcanoes

Why are earthquakes so common at the San Andreas Fault in California, but volcanic eruptions are highly unlikely? There are three main types of boundaries formed by tectonic plate movement. These boundaries named Convergent Plate, Divergent Plate and Transform Plate boundaries as you can see above. The San Andreas fault is an example to transform boundary fault and it cuts California right in half. It is perhaps the most famous and well known transform fault in the world, where the Pacific Plate meets the North American Plate and when they slip past each other, it causes large earthquakes in the city. As mentioned, this is an example to transform boundary faults and these type of plate boundaries are mostly found on the ocean floor, where they can frequently balance functional spreading ridges to shape a zigzag pattern between plates. There are quite a few on land and the San Andreas fault symbolizes one of those few uncovered transform fault on land. What tectonic activity occurs at s

A Revolution of Music

Music has a revolutionary impact on shaping the minds of individuals who view music as a marker of identifying within a class, group or race. For example, many African Americans mimic the lifestyles of hip-hop stars and gangtas that are portrayed through music. Many European Americans listen to pop and rock music and mimic the personas of pop and rock legends by their hairstyles, piercing and apparel. Throughout history many classes of people have used music as a form of revolution. African Americans used music as a form of empowerment and a source of identifying blackness, unity and strength. Many European Americans used music like many African Americans as a source of reconnecting with their lineage and discourse to the United States of America. Presently, music has helped shape the fundamentals of identity for many classes of people and has been used as a vehicle to speak out against injustice. Singers like Erkau Badu once said that her music is a revolution towards Humanism and not

Soccer Coaches and Leadership

Coaches are the natural leaders of sport teams, especially group sport, such as soccer. Barrow (1977) defined leadership as the process that affects the goal settings of individuals and groups. Numerous researchers found that the leadership of coaches impacted the performance of teams and development of athletes (Chen, 2013; Konter, 2011; Price & Weiss, 2013; Vella, Oades, & Crowe, 2013). For example, a coach provided feedback for positive behaviors and the behaviors were reinforced with youth athlete. Leadership of coaches was related to personal status and coaching level. Konter (2011) examined the relationship between the marital status of the coaches and the leadership power perception of amateur and professional soccer coaches. Participants included 165 male soccer coaches. Of the participants, 71 coaches were technical directors who had an A level license, 46 coaches who had a B level license, and 48 coaches who had an amateur level license. The mean age of the coaches was

Relationships in The Catcher In The Rye

Making attachments with other humans is a natural and normal part of every day life. However, sometimes people find that they struggle with their human attachment abilities, and they realize that its not the person they are forming a relationship with, but how attached they are getting to this relationship. This often scares people, and it has been shown that problems like this have reflected on both their mental and physical health. As a result to these human attachment problems, people usually either get anxious about forming relationships, or simply avoid them all together. In the notable fiction novel The Catcher in the Rye, author J.D Salinger brings the troubled, humorous, and adolescent character of Holden Caulfield to life, where he struggles with growing up, the uncontrollable changes in his life, and, most importantly, attachments with other humans. As a reader, a certain pattern in Holden's attachment abilities is observed, and it is made clear that he only had these issues

Bohr and Rutherford - Atomic Structure

Atomic Theory and Structure "By convention sweet, by convention bitter, by convention hot, by convention cold, by convention color: but in reality atoms and void." Those are the words of Democritus, one of the founding fathers of the ancient atomic theory, on his philosophical viewpoint on the nature of matter. It began as a philosophical concept in ancient Greece and India, but today, the atomic theory is not mere philosophy, but a scientific concept or model of the fundamental nature of matter. How it went from a philosophical belief called atomism to an empirically-proven, well-studied, scientific concept is what I'm going to explain throughout this essay; focusing on two renowned scientists of the early 20th century, Ernest Rutherford and Niels Bohr, who made significant contributions to this growing theory of the atom and its structure (the composition of the atom). The Atom Before Bohr and Rutherford The modern model of the atom was built upon the many vital discoveries of the m

The Morally Correct Ethical Theory

Everyone's opinion may differ based on their beliefs and the way they think about things. In my opinion Deontology, also known, as Kantian ethics and Consequentialist are both morally correct in terms of making moral decisions in conflicting moral situations, organizing our moral experience, and conforming to our moral intuitions. Kantian ethics is more concerned with what people do and not the result of their actions. Generally in the Deontological system, God determines our duties, rules, and obligations. Therefore being moral would be to obey the bible and follow the word of God. Moral principles are completely separated from any consequences which following those principles might have. For example, if you were to steal an item from a store and the storeowner asked you if you stole that item, the morally correct thing to do would be to tell the truth even if you know that the consequences will negatively affect you. A deontologist lives in a world of morally correct rules and Conseq

Poetic Styles of Bryant and Whitman

The poetry of the 19th century fireside poets is a traditional representation of American verse of the time. But the 1800s also saw revolutionary, innovative works from poets like Walt Whitman. This paper will explore the similarities and the differences between the poetry of William Cullen Bryant and Whitman. Bryant's poem, "The Yellow Violet," is a prime example of the traditional rhythm that he employs in his works. The poem is written in conventional iambic tetrameter, or with four beats in every line. Tetrameter works in the poem to provide a classic pattern and flow. structure of the poem itself is elegant; each of the eight stanzas are four lines long, and every other line is roughly symmetrical in length. There is also an unmistakeable rhyme scheme in "The Yellow Violet" that solidifies its place among the great traditional 19th century poetry. The first and third lines rhyme with one another, as do the second and fourth lines: "Of all her train, the

Negative Effects of Social Media

Twitter. Facebook. Instagram. Vine. Tumblr. Google+. All these social medias sites have grown substantially since the start of the "social media era," which started in 2004. From 2004 to 2014, social media network users have increased from 8% to 72%. In the same time frame, the usage of these sites from the age of 18-29 has increased from 9% to 90%. Twitter's registered users number has grown 42% and Facebook's registered users have increased 23% over the years. The growth of these social media websites was partially due to the increase in technology. The increase in the number of Smartphone, tablets, laptops, and other mobile devices has made these website more accessible. However, there were side effects to these growths. Over the years, as social media grew, there was an increase in cyber bullying, increase in false sense of connection, and even a decrease in productivi

The Drowned Men of Literature

Chun Ting Fung 132020 ENG101(1) 17 December 2013 Different Themes Presented In two "Drowned Men" Stories A "drowned man" is a character in different kinds of stories. In Gabriel Garcia Marquez's "The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World" and James Graham Ballard's "The Drowned Giant", two "drowned men" are used as the protagonists. (Both are also published in the 1960s.) (Wikipedia, 2013) They seem to have more similarities than differences. Even though the settings and plots of the two stories are similar, the people in the two stories give completely different responses. Analyzing the stories and the reactions of the people towards the "suddenly-appeared" creatures, the focus of this paper is to see whether the two stories strike differences in their respective themes. Both stories have changed the behavior of the villagers, but in an opposite direction. In "The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World", the villager

The Harsh Realities of War

I was introduced to the harsh realities of war at a very young age. Though I was never around the brutality of war, growing up with a brother who was a Marine allowed me glimpses into how much pain and damage war can cause. As a child I was very ignorant and couldn't even explain to you what exactly my brother did or what war meant. It wasn't until one night while I was sitting on the couch with my mom and my two sisters watching the news. I had no clue as to what they were talking about and was even more clueless when they started naming off names of men who were also soldiers, as my brother was. I remember looking at my mom when the list was finally over and being angry to see her crying but glad to also see her relieved. I decided then that I hated "the war ". I hated everything associated with it because I knew that war was the reason my brother was gone a majority of the time. I took it upon myself to ask my older sister what exactly my brother did as a Marine as I still didn't quite grasp the concept of war other than knowing that I hated it. After that night, it had been

Special Education and Autism

The purpose of the study Examining the Quality of IEPs for Young Children with Autism conducted by Ruble, A., McGrew, J., Dalrymple, N., & Jung, L. (2011) was completed in order to evaluate the efficiency of the Individual Education Program (IEP) as a tool to evaluate the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and the National Research Council (NRC) requirements/recommendations for children who have been diagnosed with autism. The research was completed by using a pilot sample of young children who have IEP's. Taking the IEP's and review the relations between the associations between the teacher, child, the school and if the IEP is a quality tool. Participants in the study had to meet the definition and qualifications of autism and were actively receiving services that meet the IDEA category. The research team evaluated the individual and randomly selected the participants after receiving consent from the parents and the teachers. The study first had seventy-nine participants to choose from and after the screening p

Hitler's Rise to Power

Global History II: The Rise of Hitler and the NAZI Party in Germany After the 1919 Treaty of Versailles, Germany was known as the Wiemar Republic. It had a very liberal Constitution with many political parties. However: the Constitution had a clause that would be fatal to its existence. This was the Enabling Clause which gave the President supreme powers in times of an emergency. But: it was unstable and unpopular. What made it so unpopular among many Germans was the fact that it had signed the hated Treaty of Versailles, and so its leaders were denounced as the November Traitors. In 1919 there were revolutions throughout Germany, especially Berlin, backed by the Bolsheviks and Communists. Right-wing armed groups attacked them, and ultimately, the government regained control. Even so, the government had many enemies that wanted to see it destroyed. Many wanted a return the day of Germanys military and territorial glory before WW I. The Army, in particular, was never very loyal

Lutheran and Samoan Religious Services

Lutheran and Samoan religious service are some what similar and some what different. Both religions have one huge thing in common, they believe that Jesus Christ died for our sins, and that if you live by the word of God and do the right things by him you will end up in heaven. Before church in Samoa, the younger and older women usually prep for lunch for after the service. The younger children are usually running around like chickens with their heads cut off trying to find a nice pulakasis (dress shirt with skirt that match) for the girls and usually a colored collared shirt with a tie and a lava lava (man skirt). Before our church service my grandmother is usually yelling at us because the girls are taking to long to get ready. We usually just wear nice dress pants with a nice shirt or dresses, the males wear khakis and a collared shirt. The Samoan Church that I went to in American Samoa is a relatively large in size. It has three circular pillars, it is white with gold accents

Symbolisim in The Catcher in the Rye

Songs, movies, and other forms of media all influence people in their daily lives'. The way that people perceive the messages and information conveyed in these pieces are how they choose to interpret them. What they represent to someone can only result in a temporary change, but also a lasting effect. In The Catcher in the Rye, J.D. Salinger uses the symbol of the Little Shirley Beans record to reveal that the loss of one's innocence gives one a newfound sense of reality. This revelation develops from the record's underlying message, the event of the record breaking, and Phoebe's handling of the record. Holden becomes more aware of reality because of the Little Shirley Beans record's underlying message. When Holden first hears the record at his school, he finds it appealing and intently analyzes it. He is fascinated by the singer, Estelle Fletcher, and explains,"If a white girl was singing it, she'd make it sound cute as hell, but old Estelle Fletcher knew what the hell she was doing,

Cleft Palate Research

Each year nearly 2,651 babies are born with a cleft palate and nearly 4,437 are born with a cleft lip (Center for disease prevention, 2013). The roof of your mouth is called the palate and it forms during the sixth to ninth week of pregnancy. A cleft palate happens when the tissue that forms the palate fails to form properly (Center for disease prevention, 2013). Scientific research on cleft palate is important because it helps determine whether or not a child is born with or without a cleft palate while the mother is still pregnant. This allows the mother to decide what to do from there early on. Some causes of a cleft palate include smoking, too much intake of vitamin A, and the deficiency, or lack of, folic acid (Center for disease prevention, 2013). A cleft lip or palate occurs in every 1-2 babies out of every 1000 (Kids Health, 2014). Digestive and respiratory systems are affected by a cleft palate. In a cleft palate, since the tissue isn't formed all the way, it makes it hard for

Poetry Analysis - Love in Different Forms

Love, the most intense of all emotional sensations and a feeling, of which, can make a person feel "on top of the world. " Sadly, without the feeling of love, a person can feel miserable. Love comes in many forms, shapes, and sizes. Most people cannot even define love beyond "an intense feeling of joy and warmth. " With different forms of love come different reactions to those feelings. Just as there are different forms of love; there are different types of love poems. Poems may be the most romantic of writings, or are typically viewed as such. Don Paterson's "Letter to the Twins " and R.S. Thomas' "All Right " are two different types of love poems. Both poems are thematic; both poems have a theme surrounding an inflected word. Don Paterson wrote the love poem "Letter to the Twins. " In "Letter to the Twins, " Paterson touches on the notions of love, sex, women, and motherhood; each topic significant in its own way to the author. Sadly, this poem has come under fire several times due

Lord of the Flies- True Character

"Self-interest is but the survival of the animal in us," said Henri Frederic Amiel. It is believed that many have two sides to their personality which provides a chance for the barbarian within them to come out. In difficult situations, the longing for one's need of power or desire for confidence evolves into the drive to pull one towards the primitive human being inside. Therefore, the drive of superiority led to destruction of balance as the competition between characters over power, courage, and leadership brought out the animal they had in themselves. In Lord of the Flies, William Golding illustrates through his characterization of Ralph, Jack, and Piggy that humans reveal their true character when put in a predicament. To begin with, William Golding uses the character Ralph to show how in time of conflict one reveals their true leadership skills. Sometimes in conflict it is easier to just abandon the problem. However, if one takes control and overcome the hardships, one

Case Study – Swallowed Foreign Bodies

Ingestion of foreign bodies can lead to serious problems. 80% to 90% of ingested foreign bodies pass without warning, however some may cause serious problems, like perforation and obstruction of the bowels, perforation of the abdominal wall or in some cases poisoning can occur [Lia08]. It has become a recurrent problem with 80% of the patients being children [Lia08]. Other patients include the elderly, mentally impaired patients, alcoholic individuals, and may occur intentionally in prisoners or psychiatric patients. Foreign bodies with smooth edges usually do not pose significant problems; however sharp objects like razor blades, pins, needles or screws pose a bigger threat. Ingestion of metallic foreign bodies such as large coins or button-type batteries can also lead to poisoning due to the chemical re

Faith and Family in The Diary of a Napoleonic Foot Soldier

Jakob Walter's diary provided an insight into Walter's sense of identity throughout the process of Napoleonic Wars. Pain and misery were a constant challenge to Walter, bringing him a step closer to mental and physical breakdown with each day of the war. However, faith in God and love for his family were important parts of Walter's identity that pushed him to go further. Of German origin, Walter did not share French glory or Russian patriotism1: he does not portray hatred towards Russians, or affection towards Napoleon. Without enthusiasm the Germans obediently served the Grande Armeé, obligated to do so because of the alliance with France. Even though Walter generally refused to openly comment on the political context of the combat, in the part where he wrote how "[Napoleon's] outward appearance seemed indifferent and unconcerned over the wretchedness of his soldiers "2 is still apparent that he disapproved Napoleon's approach. The suffering of Napoleonic soldiers was the mos

Determining Causes and Effects - Corporate America

Through the years, there has been a great change in society's employment. Corporate America has taken extreme cutbacks in the labor department that has left many unemployed. Anger and concern over layoffs, wage , benefits, as well as movement of jobs to other countries has left everyone with undesirable views of the actions by Corporate America. With the unemployment rate on a downward slope, Americans have become upset which has resulted in emotional, social, and, economic issues. Although unemployment rate is in the decline many families are still in distress because of social and economic problems caused. The rate has been on a very slow downfall over the months which indicate a slow job market. Even though it's a positive indication, most companies aren't hiring at a large rate. As the economy continues to recover slowly many are still trying to balance their financially and socially. The situation appears to show progress over the past few months, leaving the unemployment benefi
