Concussions in Sports

Every year thousands of youth and high school athletes receive sports-related concussions. Concussions are among the most common and potentially among the most dangerous injuries high school and younger athletes receive. Recently concussions have been getting more attention from doctors and team trainers due to increased awareness, but more still needs to be done to protect young athletes. No sport is immune to concussions. They don't just occur in football and boxing, concussions are commonly seen in baseball, basketball, and soccer too. Increasing participation in youth and high school athletics has helped lower rates of childhood obesity, but has also increased the risk on injuries to these young athletes (Denke 1). Concussions in youth sports are a silent epidemic that is affecting thousands of athletes every year. "A concussion is a disturbance in the brain's function caused by a direct or indirect force to the head " (Washburn 5). Concussion damage is invisible, which makes it

Persuasian in Twelve Angry Men

Persuasion is an attempt to influence a person's beliefs, attitudes, intentions, motivations, or behaviors. Persuasion began with the Greeks and from then on people began to incorporate it into modern day theories. There are many tactics to use persuasion. After viewing the film "Twelve Angry Men" I noticed that the characters were however using these exact methods that the textbook emphasized on. In their arguments, each juror seeks to influence the position of the rest of the jury members. The story is based in New York City in 1957 where an 18 year old boy is being put on trial for stabbing his father to death. In the opening scene you hear the judge giving his final instructions to the jury to conclude if the boy is guilty of murder. The judge also informs them that if they come to a guilty decision the boy will be given a mandatory death sentence. The jury then moves to a private room in the courthouse where they decide to take a short break before discussing their decisions. The film makes it seem that during this break you already know that the decision will be guilty and they plan on telli

Government Control in North Korea

"Thwack! Thwack! " Blood is rushing down the backs of the innocent prisoners as the fierce prison guard pounds them across their backs with the 3inch thick leather whip. In the distance you hear young children crying as they are separated from their parents. Little do they know this will be the last time they will ever see each other. The adults will either be put to work or be sentenced to death depending on their reason for coming to the prison camps. The kids will be put to work on farms or in other prison camps for the rest of their lives. Prison camps are a harsh things and this is just one of the many strict policies/rules that North Korea enforces. The issue of these strict rules and policies, dating back to the Korean War, cause the North Korean government to be considered a theocracy by many. North Korea has total control over its citizens. Dating back to the Korean War, North Koreas government has had total control over its citizens. Varying from punishments, prison camps, a

Themes of Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl

How does one imagine the life of slave girl? Of course it's not going to be rainbows and butterflies but it's hard to imagine how it really was. Harriet Jacobs gives insight through Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl. Jacobs uses the pen name "Linda " and states that at first she had a good mistress that taught her how to read, write, and sew but when her mistress dies and she's given to another her life takes a turn. She faces many hardships but they make her stronger. Throughout the book Jacobs touches upon many topics like religion, the differences between the North and the South, and feminism. To begin with one of the most controversial topic touched upon throughout the book was religion. Jacobs described how religion was used by slave owners to control their slaves. Jacobs wrote,"They seem to satisfy their consciences with the doctrine that God created the Africans to be slaves. " (69) The slave owners are trying to make themselves feel better,"satisfy their consciences", abo

Strange Fits of Passion Have I Known

The poem "Strange Fits of Passion have I known" published by William Wordsworth in 1800 has seven stanzas of four lines each and is composed of the rhyming scheme a-b-a-b. It describes the narrator's trip to Lucy's cottage on horseback and his thoughts along the way. William Wordsworth lived in Europe during the late 18th to mid-19th century, and was a major contributor to the Romantic era. This was a time of an artistic, literacy and intellectual movement originating in Europe. By exploring the passionate and sympathetic tone of the narrator, its image, and the diction, this paper argues that this poem expresses romanticism. The tone of a poem is the implied attitude of the narrator towards the subject and characters. In "Strange Fits of Passion have I known" the narrator shows a strong passionate and sympathetic tone relating to the poems romanticism. The first stanza ("STRANGE fits of passion have I known: And I will dare to tell, But in the Lover's ear a

The Cost of Being an Overachiever

"Real learning comes about when the competitive spirit has ceased" (Krishnamurti). Krishnamurti is saying that being in competition with one or another distracts students from learning. Competition can be more harmful than beneficial especially when it comes to high school. High school has become a competitive frenzy to be number one. Forcing high school students to try to outdo one another is counterproductive for their learning. High school competition is destructive to student's self-esteem, it causes stress and it leads students to cheat. Competition in high school creates self-doubt in students. We live in a culture that tells students that it isn't enough to be good but they must triumph over others. Students have stopped trying because they say. "What's the point?" Students begin to feel uninterested in school. Students are losing confidence in themselves because they are not among the top three in the graduating class or having a perfect or near perfect score on SAT. The whole affair becomes a vicious cycle; the more a student competes, the more the student needs to compete to feel good about themselves. Student's feelings of self-

Polybius on Fortune and Historical Causation

Ancient civilizations have fascinated the world for century due to their mysterious and unknown past. Archaeological sites, artwork, architecture, and literature have all aided in the pursuit of exploring the ancient world. While literature may not be in it's complete format today, it is the most direct and accurate method of research. Scholars have continually relied on the writings of the era to ascertain what conditions existed, how culture and society developed, and what events happened that shaped the modern world. One such writer academics rely on is the Greek historian Polybius. Polybius was a Greek man, living in Rome at the height of its Republic power. While he went to Rome as a prisoner, he left as a man of respect and renown having befriended many powerful Romans, including the famous general, Scipio. He is most famous for his Histories, which chronicles the rise of the Roman Republic to its Empire days. His books cover many wars and conquests, most importantly the three Pu

Procopius' Secret History

The Secret History is one of Procopius's many works that helped him become of one of the most renowned scholars of all time. Written sometime during the sixth century but not actually published until 1653, The Secret History is one of the most valuable resources that provide information about the reign of Emperor Justinian. At the time of Justinian's rule, Procopius was an advisor to the military commander Belisarius, and was eventually hired as Justinian's biographer. While he constantly glorifies the emperor's deeds in public documents, Procopius condemns Justinian and his wife Theodora behind closed doors, calling them a "pair of blood-thirsty demons of some sort."1 Because Procopius never made the couple's wrong doings a public affair during their reign, he could only denounce Justinian and Theodora in private while the rest of the empire celebrated their rule. As described in The Secret History, Justinian and Theodora are unfitting for Procopius' model of ideal Roman rul

Friendship in A Separate Peace

A friendship often requires having common likes and similarities, which is why Gene and Finny's friendship may seem unstable at times. Aside their differences, Gene and Finny's friendship is everlasting, and real. It is possible to have differences and still hold on to the thing that matters most; true friendship. As shown in chapter one, it is clear that Gene and Finny's friendship isn't like any other. You can tell that Finny is more in control of the things that they do. Finny had no problem with jumping out of the tree, whereas Gene was scared but still went for it as Finny pressured him to jump. Although later he denies to Finny that he was "shamed" into jumping. Even though he thought to himself, "Why did I let Finny talk me into stupid things like this?" (Knowles 9). The dynamics of their friendship are far from simple; the power in the relationship is easily toward Finny, who can make Gene do things he doesn't want to do. Similarities in a friendship are wh

More than One Reality

Reality is kind of like a memory. Everyone has their own different ideas of what it should be but none are necessarily the truth. For example two people who were both in the great depression could have totally different thoughts on the difficult times. While one could have lived on the streets struggling every day to find food and water, the other could have been among the few rich people and lived in luxury. Both of them would have very different memories about how times were back then. The same goes for reality. While we all might agree on what is real or not our thoughts on reality could be on different sides of the spectrum. The definition of reality is the state or quality of having existence or substance. If something is real to me then thats my reality and same goes for someone else, so whos to say that there isnt more than one reality and why is humanity so interested in reality? I believe that humanity is so interested in reality because we are naturally curious. They say cur

The James Bay Project and Urban Ontario

Canada is known for its massive land space, cold weather, and multiculturalism. It is known as the second largest country in the world (by land size) and it takes pride in the amount of immigrants it has sheltered. The population continues to grow drastically. In 2012, the population exceeded 35 million and with a projected increase of roughly 500,000 people per year, Canada can expect to reach 40 million people by 2020. Since 1851, Canada has increased in size over 14 times. (Bone, 2014). This rapid increase is not due to only fertility rates increasing. It is highly associated with immigration. One may ask how exactly this increase in immigration affects the country. Indeed, there are a number of positives and negatives that go along with sheltering newcomers. Canada is at an all time high in regards to immigration increase. Non-European and non-Christian immigrants have been coming to the country in record numbers (Bone, 2014). This changes the way Canada is viewed. Because of the

My Educational Journey

Over the past 13 years of being in the education system I have seen my relationship with my family develop into a pretty decent symbiotic one. Meaning that I learn from them and they learn from me. The significance of it being symbiotic is that I am in higher education now, so I have a chance to teach them while they still teach me. Over the years I've seen myself coming closer with my family, them becoming more supportive of me and how they live vicariously through me. To start off, I would like to introduce my family. It consists of my mother, stepfather, father, and grandmother. Each of those individuals has affected me in my educational journey over the years. As my high-school career was coming to an end, and after I chose which college I was going to I saw my family's attitude change drastically. I wasn't treated as the High school (HS) I was, I was viewed as a young adult who was capable enough to handle his own. My family, in particularly my grandmother and mother used to treat me like I was a baby in the sense that they were always there for me when I called them. However, towards the end of HS I saw how they gave me more freedom, and

Humanity in The Epic of Gilgamesh

The Epic of Gilgamesh is an ancient poem from the Mesopotamian Era that tells the story of two companions: Gilgamesh, the powerful and tyrannical demigod who rules as the King of Uruk, and Enkidu, a feral man who is created as an equal for the king by the gods, lifted out of nature and civilized by the touch of woman. After becoming friends, the two mighty men become restless, as they share the same desire for immortality. They go on a quest for everlasting life, which involves trekking into the wilderness to defeat Humbaba, the monstrous Guardian of the Cedars and representation of nature. However, even though the two vanquish this creature, they both fail to become divine beings, and die separate deaths as mere mortals. Throughout the epic, there is a reoccurring conflict between humanity and death, though it often appears to be a battle of nature and humanity. Humans cannot be opposed to nature, if nature is life, and, in their fight against death, they are reaching for eternal life

The Perks of Being a Wallflower - Stephen Chbosky

Now that I have officially finished reading The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky, my opinion on the book has drastically changed. Originally, I thought the book was very dull, tedious, and boring. Now, I believe it was actually quite insightful and thought-provoking. I learned many lessons and it opened my eyes to the realities some teenagers face while experiencing high school. I came to a realization that once you put yourself in the narrator's shoes, you're able see from their perspective more clearly. That is precisely what happened to me. I now understand some additional, deeper meanings behind Charlie's inner thoughts and actions. Moreover, it was easier for me to find similarities between his life and mine as the story trudged on. Charlie's story of his intimidating freshman year comes to a close within the last third of this novel. He mentions all the hardships he endures while watching his senior friends finish up high school and head off to college. His best friends Patrick and Sam go to prom, complete college applications, tour university campus

My Cousin Kevin

I have many cousins on both sides of my family. But there is one cousin in particular whom I have always been closest to. His name is Kevin, and he is older than me. Having this closeness with my cousin allows us to really connect and bond together. He introduced me to new ideas and beliefs that I would never have discovered on my own. Without his guidance it would have been more difficult for me to grow up and become who I am today. And that's why it was very upsetting to find out that Kevin, while away at college, had been experimenting with drugs which eventually led to him becoming addicted to heroin. One time, after taking some heroin, his veins collapsed, and he ended up in the hospital. When I found this out, my heart dropped because I realized that I could lose someone very important in my life. I became very upset, and to make it worse, I was not going to be able to see him for a while. I didn't know this at the

Abortion - A Social Necessity

Abstract Abortion is often a topic of controversy in a democratic and free country of America. This paper reviews academic articles to demonstrate and compile the need for abortion as a social necessity to express women's right to control the reproductively and ensure their safety. Having a choice is an empowering right that in other countries is often punished by prison time. The right to an abortion to all women ensures safety regulations are put in place and followed. This makes the procedure safer and the mortality rate among women lower. Cultural beliefs in other countries such as religious implications, have impacted the politics around abortion.  Since America has people from all over the world and from many different religions, religion has fortunately not been able to affect the law in the same manner. Allowing women to have a right to an abortion is a freedom that is needed to ensure democracy and progress as a nation. Keywords: Abortion, America, Freedom, Women's Choice A

History of Professional Wrestling

Professional wrestling has been around since the 1800's premiering as a circus act. It has amassed thousands of fans throughout that time, but it is evident that within the past century professional wrestling has achieved a significantly larger audience reaching the millions. What is the reason for this massive increase in viewership for professional wrestling? My answer is because people all over the world love and desire all forms of entertainment, and professional wrestling in the past 100 years has been transformed into something coined sports-entertainment thanks to the style of wrestling implemented by the World Wrestling Entertainment and its creator and current chairman, Vincent Kennedy McMahon. I chose to write my senior thesis about how Vince McMahon developed a synergy between cable television and WWE and how this synergy has produced outstanding accomplishments for sports-entertainment. Professional wrestling in the modern era cannot and should not be viewed or deemed as

Sympathy by Paul Laurence Dunbar

"Sympathy" is a poem written by Paul Laurence Dunbar, an African American poet, who lived during the early 19th and 20th century. At the time, African Americans were fighting for their rights and much of his work demonstrates the conflicts and controversy of the situation. Paul Dunbar's main theme through out the poem is the agony of captivity. He uses many devices such as metaphors, repetition, simile, imagery and Anthropomorphism to support his theme. Paul Laurence Dunbar also uses diction to link back to his theme. He uses a particular structure to link it to the theme of his poem. Paul Dunbar uses many examples throughout the poem to demonstrate his theme. The title of the poem "Sympathy" displays how the poet is trying to evoke sympathy from the reader. In the first stanza Paul Dunbar says, "I know what the caged bird feels, alas!" this line exhibits how Paul Dunbar feels the same way as a caged bird. He is comparing how a caged bird feels to how an African American feels in a white society durin

Summary of Psalm 20

This prayer for David is entitled a psalm of David because it was intended it or him to draw up a directory, or form of prayer, to be used in the congregation for himself and those in authority under him. Note that even great men and those that know how to pray for themselves very well, must not despise, but desire, the prayers of others for them, even those that are inferior to them in all respects. Paul often begged of his friends to pray for him. It is Gods will that prayers and thanks, should be made in special manner for kings and all in high authority. This psalm is exactly that, a prayer and a giving of thanks for the king. David was a warlike prince who was very much involved with war. Either this psalm was written for sort of a pre-war ritual, some particular battle of his own, or as a form to be used in the daily service of the church for him. The structure is guided by the pronouns "you" (v. 1-5, 9), "we" (v. 5), and briefly "I" (v. 6). In thi

Development of the Conformity to Masculine Norms

The purpose of this article is to describe the building of the CMNI and the factor analysis used. It also gives examples of how male masculine norms form due to male figures and how society influence social standards. Social norms are rules and standards help influence a person's behavior. Social norms are learned through interactions with different kinds of people, which allow a person to know what appropriate and inappropriate behavior is. This norm will lead to repeated behavior, which turns into a tradition. Along side of social norm is gender role that includes the "rules" which steer and limit what masculine and feminine behaviors are. Gender role is learned through observation in a social environment, where men and woman are told how they should and shouldn't

I Never Sang for My Father

Being a father is never an easy task. As for Tom Garrison, a dynamic character in the play I Never Sang for My Father by Robert Anderson, his traumatic childhood memory of being abandoned has made it even more difficult for him to be a good father for his children. Those painful memories did turn him into a strong, remarkable man, but they also made him become a self-centered person and a pathetic, unloving father. Steel that has gone through the hottest fire is the strongest one. Likewise, the hardships Tom had to endure as a child toughened his soul and sharpened his mind. Abandoned by his alcoholic father, Tom lived in "a miserable two-room tenement " (Anderson 650) with his mom and siblings. The situation went from bad to worse when his mother passed away, leaving her little children uncared for. Tom, who was just 10 years old at that time, forced himself to overcome grief and to hold himself together for the sake of his siblings. He even shoved his father off in the funeral of hi

Biography of Winston Churchill

In Churchill: The Unexpected Hero, Paul Addison describes Winston Churchill's path to historical greatness. He traces Churchill's personal development and political career and explores how a "politician who had a one time or another offended every party and faction became the embodiment of national unity, an uncrowned king whose charisma threatened to eclipse the monarchy. " (4) Addison develops the theme of "the epic struggle between Churchill and his critics " (1) over the years, declaring that "Churchill won two great victories in the Second World War. The first was a victory over Nazi Germany. The second was a victory over the many sceptics who, for decades, had derided his judgement, denied his claims to greatness and excluded him from 10 Downing Street on the grounds that he was sure to be a danger to King and Country. Gothic and Romanesque Architecture

Before 1000 C.E. churches were simply built to allow villagers in their respective areas to be able to worship the God they believed in. Starting with the Romanesque style, and later the Gothic style architecture, churches began to become massive monuments built to house sculptures, be early tourism destinations, and simply allow the people in growing cities to all worship at one central location. Romanesque and Gothic architecture certainly sound different from their names, but the similarities are much more numerous than one may think. Romanesque architecture came before Gothic starting in the late 1000s when architects started to, almost out of nowhere, favor stone buildings and roofs as opposed to easily flammable wood structures. This seems relatively obvious but fires back in those times were exponentially more devastating as they are today, with the lack of technology and understanding. This fear of
