The Demise on War: Pages 54-56

As Paul Bäumer narrates this violent scene, one can visualize what is going on because of the expressive and graphic words used to describe the environment and physical condition of the wounded. In addition, the theme here is death and pain that comes from war, along with the loss of emotions demonstrated by Paul Bäumer and Kat. "The youngster", who is on the verge of death in this passage, was seen earlier in the book joking around with the soldiers and now is in the most grave situation of his life being handled by Paul and Kat. This passage is of significance because it shows the reaction Bäumer and Kat have to the violence that occurs on the battlefield. The opening sentence of the passage: "The shelling has ceased, I turn towards the crater beckoning to the others (54)", shows that the opposing side has stopped engaging in combat. Furthermore, Paul alerts the others to come near him essentially saying that it's now safe. As soon as Paul does this, he and his soldiers' first instinct is to check for the wounded and dead. The

A Way to Live Life - Ender's Game

Every person has the option to live his or her life the way he or she would like, whether it be the way they think, or the actions they decide make. Here in America we are free to live life as we please, we can do any job, and we have the opportunity to do that job any way we would like. In the book Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card, Ender's philosophy is that he gives 100 percent effort in all aspects of his life. He does not do things half way, but instead, he does what he needs to do to complete his job thoroughly. Ender does everything to the best of his abilities even if it is not a task that he enjoys. There are two great examples that show how Ender will do something to the best of his abilities, even if he does not want to. Both came when Ender is being ganged up on and is about to get beat up. The first situation is when Ender was 6 and he had just gotten out of school. Stillson, the school bully ganged up on Ender and is picking on him, when Ender saw the opportunity, to kick Stillson to the ground, and took it. Ender knew that his only way to stop them from ever picking on End

Media Analysis - Strengths and Weaknesses

There is no doubt that TV, Twitter, and Facebook are three very different sources of media. They each have their pros and cons when it comes to covering news. The way people find things out today is much different than it was just 10 years ago. Facebook was founded in 2004, and Twitter in 2006. Before that, everyone was reading the newspaper and watching the local news station to find out what was happening all around. Now with the Internet, who needs newspapers? Why wait until the day after, when you can have the breaking news just hours after it happened by looking online? There was a recent story on the local news about how the SAT test is going through some major changes. The reporter touched on some specific changes such as the type of vocabulary words will change to more modern words used in school and jobs. She also mentioned that the essay that so many students stressed over will now be optional and the there will also be free test prep offered to the world. The good thing abo

Moving to Kotzebue, Alaska

My life changed drastically when my parents decided to pull up their roots in Utah and venture to the small village of Kotzebue, Alaska. I knew with this move I would be forced to leave behind my entire extended family and best friend. What I didn't know at the time was that Kotzebue would change my life in many aspects. From the carefree mentality to the love for a simple life, Kotzebue was definitely the place for me. The experiences I had in Kotzebue made me look at life from a different perspective. Kotzebue is a small town located on a peninsula surrounded by the Chuckchi Sea. The village is isolated from any major city, which makes for expensive produce and little community entertainment. When there isn't a movie theater and very little else to do, the boredom forces people to get creative and find something productive to do. Although very limited in a sense, it is surprising to see what can be done in such a small town. Kotzebue has shaped me into the person I am today because

Summary of an Argument - My Backyard Jungle

James Barilla in My Backyard Jungle pieces together his own wildlife boundaries in his backyard and compares it those of other parts of the world. I will examine Barilla's struggles with creating wildness in his backyard in comparison to how different cities of the world manage to live side-by-side with the wild animal population. I will also discuss how Barilla notices and investigates peoples' abilities to coexist. Furthermore, I will review the education, training, and career of James Barilla in hopes to better understand the purpose of his work, My Back Yard Jungle. His struggle for coexistence is made even harder as he begins to realize that there is no perfect balance and that he just needs to deal with things as they happen in his yard. The birds, the bees, and the fruit trees all work together and function now he must figure out how to do the same. In the beginning of his novel, Barilla describes how he began to analyze the coexistence in his backyard, and relates it to his tr

Music, the Brain and the Body

Your brain is the core of who you are and what you do in everyday situations. Having music may just be a way to stimulate your brain to new open ideas and more knowledge you didn't even know you had. When you feel stressed or are in need of getting away music is a great solution to zoning out of the world. With so many genres of music out today you probably are wondering which genre is best for your brain to be stimulated or relax you. Research shows that classical music has the best affect on stimulating the brain because of the relaxation and calm mood of the music. In an article I read called "How does music affect the brain?" it started off talking about how music is said to influence the process of thinking, learning, analyze matters faster and work better. It also talks about how it can have a positive affect on your mood and attitude to listeners and give them a sense of motivation. In the article it states that listening to what some call "feel good" music

Mankind and Nature in Out of Africa

Connecting Mankind to Nature in Out of Africa In Isak Dinesen's Out of Africa, the writer describes the land as if they were living in a paradise. The two main reasons for this are: the land, animals and natives complement each other; and, the natives and animals when given the choice between freedom and oppression, they would rather die than live without freedom. Dinesen proposes that Africa is a pastoral landscape in which men exist in a truer form than they do in Europe. This philosophy emerges from the "pastoral school" consistent with many nineteenth century writers and painters, who believed that man exists in his most godlike form when he has a strong connection to nature. It is through this philosophy that Dinesen is able to show the effects of the locale on the narrative and characters. First, the land, animals and natives complement each other as though they were living in a paradise. In Part I, Chapter I, the author introduces a setting of tremendous beauty: " com

The Government Shutdown of 1995-1996

In early November 1995, the United States federal government began experiencing problems between Congress and the White House. These problems were due to proposed funding for Medicare, the environment, the educational system, and public health in the 1996 federal budget. Since no agreement could be reached, the federal government was forced to shut down. Former Democratic President Bill Clinton and Republican Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich debated heavily on these budget issues. The government was shut down for 27 days between November 13-19, 1995 and December 6-January 16, 1996. The shutdown had a large impact on the federal government, Wall Street, and the citizens of the United States. A government shutdown is the closure of non-essential offices to the government when Congress can not reach an agreement on government budgets for the next fiscal year. Approval is reached when Congress is able to pass all of the appropriate spending bills regarding the federal budget. Government

The Electoral College: Federalism and Democracy

According to the federalism principle, the American government is separated by lines of policy, where the national government centralizes the views, policies, and responsibilities of the entire country. At the same time, states, no matter how large or small, populous or isolated, gets its fair say in national decisions, and that federal (national) government cannot encroach on these rights. The democratic principle, however, stipulates that the people are the source of the power, not political parties, benefactors, patrons, or even their representatives, who could simply go unelected once their terms end and the dissatisfied people are ready for change. The problem that this presents, however, prevents individual citizens' voices, or the voices of the general public, the democratic principle supports, from the vote in policy and governmental decisions that it is entitled to by the federalism principle. A paradoxical tension arises that nature can only regulate by violating one of the p

Terrorism and Torture

The term torture means the action or practice of inflicting severe pain on someone as a punishment or to force them to do or say something, or for the pleasure of the person inflicting the pain. Torture is not only immoral but experts have said that torture is impractical and ineffective. Torture dates back to 530 A.D. In the 12th Century Roman law was edited so that officials could use torture in criminal proceedings. Even though torture has been used for a long time there were people even then that were against it. In the 4th century philosophers such as Aristotle realized that those under pressure are just as likely to give false evidence as true. They also understood that the person being tortured can make false accusations against others in hope of being sooner released. Torture is being used in modern war all over the world as well. Lynching, stun belt, third degree, police brutality and much more are forms of torture that is still happening today. Torture can cause negative feel

This notion explains that deceitful acts come with appropriate consequences. Deception is the act of deceiving, convincing someone of something that is not true, or to give a mistaken impression. Characters in plays written by Shakespeare have always had, characteristics which easily and effectively conveyed the themes associated with his works. Deception with noble intent is the concept of deceiving for the betterment of other people. Ignoble intentions are the acts for which other people are harmed, for ones own well-being. In Hamlet, Shakespeare indicates that people who deceive with noble intentions will be rewarded, whereas people who deceive with ignoble intentions will endure suffering. This theme is developed through Shakespeare's play Hamlet, using leading characters showing noble and ignobles traits such as Hamlet and Polonius, as

The Value of Minimum Wage

The first attempt to establishing minimum wage was during the Great depression. It failed, due to the Supreme Court striking it down in 1935. Three years later, President Franklin Roosevelt signed the Fair Labor Standards Act, as a result, a minimum hourly wage of 25 cent was inaugurate. Over a century later, Americans are still debating the merits of this fundamental portion of the New Deal. The question is, is it necessary for government to ensure that, low skills worker receive a decent paycheck, or would the economy and low wage earners be better off without government intervention. The logical response is latter, primarily because, the continuity of minimum wage would only raise the unemployment and diminish the employment for low skilled workers. The first argument is, minimum wage will escalate the raise of unemplo

Self-Directed Learning

There is a considerable difference between college and university in the way that information is acquired. Coming from a teacher-centered environment students have to be adapted to a more individual one, where they should force themselves in a process of research and critical approach to information. The way in which independent learning can be achieved during university and how it benefits to the student for their future career will be the main arguments discussed in this essay. Independent learning is self-directed learning (Mayer at al., 2008b). The learning is defined, organized and completed by the student where educators may act only as facilitators. In other words, the center of this scenario is the student. Lecturers represent only a guide, which leads the research and the evaluation of the information that students find. However, there is a reason why there are many definitions behind "independent learning" .It depends on how each individual decides to approach this term. The concept of self-directed learning is not a new concept, but there is a lack of accordance about the true meaning of it (Bro

Phoenicia - Advancements in Art, Trade, and Travel

MPD and Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) are related with some variations the two. In fact, evidence of multiple personality is said to exist in the images of shamans changed into animal forms or embodying spirits in Paleolithic cave paintings"[Put89]. Treatment for MPD or DID has raised much controversy over if the disorder actually exists or if it is caused by the therapist in the way they use hypnosis to find out the cause. The Hazards of Genetically Modified Foods

Since the creation of Genetically Modified Foods in the 1950s, there has been increasing controversy over scientific, environmental, social, and the ethical issues surrounding them. The history of Genetically Modified foods shows that the initial purpose was to extend shelf life, improve flavor, and increase resiliency against degradation and rotting. According to Margaret McLean, a profound researcher of GMO's, the first products to be genetically modified were tomatoes. These tomatoes were developed in 1994 and were given the name "Flavr Savr Tomatoes " because of the enhanced flavor and long lasting shelf life. Initially consumers reacted positively to the idea of genetically modified foods. (McLean). However the process of genetic modification was not very well perceived by UK consumers, as agreed upon by Bryan Endres, the author of "GMO: Genetically Modified Organism or Gigantic Monetary Obligation? The Liability Schemes for GMO Damage in the United States and the European Union.

Beowulf had returned to his thrown for twenty-five years, and in the land of the Geats there had been peace and prosperity throughout this time. The dilemma, though, was not in the Geat's territory; rather it was across the Gulf of Ambrosia in the territory of Avalon. The Geats were close allies to the Avalonin people, and Beowulf was informed that they were in unimaginable danger. This almighty warrior knew that he could not let atrocity leak havoc on his people. Beowulf had to accost this savage and protect his kingdom from further turmoil. It was a massive behemoth, larger than any typical brute. Its malicious killings and devious traps resembled the evil serpent in the Garden of Eden, very intriguing but evil. The savage was killing people left and right. I

Exit Through the Gift Shop

The narrative structure of Exit Through the Gift Shop was a real setting. It was made in Los Angeles, California. The depth is both objective and subjective narration. It is objective narration because because we get to see the external characters' behavior which consists of the characters' height, there talents and hobbies outside of being a graffiti artist. We also see subjective narration which consists of seeing and hearing what the person behind the camera is experiencing. We see this when Mr. Brainwash showed us his tapes and videos from over the years. Biography of Alice James

Diary writing is generally viewed as a private and uninhibited activity, a stream of consciousness recording personal changes from day to day. However, there does exist a mindful process of selection and structuring of thoughts taking place, even if the writer is not fully aware of it. When Alice James, the youngest sister of the famous Henry the novelist, and William the psychologist, started journaling, she was 40 years old. She was a sick shut-in, suffering from breast cancer and mental illness, who's only company was a nurse and her companion, Katherine Peabody Loring. Like many other diary writers, James' decision to write a little every day was in hope that it might "bring relief as an outlet to that geyser of emotions, sensations, speculations, and reflections which ferments perpetually within my poor old carcass for its sins," (Edel, 25) for her inner turmoil was motivated by a desperate sense of isolation. The claim that diarists are only writers and write with the
