The Caste System in India

Around the world, countries and nations have established methods for organizing their citizens into different social groups. Specifically in India, they have had set up, for many centuries, a way of shaping their country into social strata, called caste systems. "The caste system is a form of hierarchical, kin-based social organization of great antiquity found in South Asian societies," however, with the changing times, the normal traditions are changing (Merchant). Caste systems were and are a major basis of unity, strife, stratification, politics, and social dominance. The caste system is still a significant part of Indian culture today because even though each caste follows their specific regulations, some of the rules have been altered to create a more efficient society, however there have been consistent norms that have stayed the same throughout the years. Within the caste system are layers, or groups of people, that each have their own rules and regulations they must

Art Analysis - Girl Before a Mirror

Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) was a Spanish painter who painted Girl Before a Mirror in March of 1932. A first glance at the painting could lead the viewer to think of vanity because the girl is starring at herself through a psyche mirror. However, the painting reveals more than that due to evidence of a grown womb and an older face. The girl is captivated by her mortality, which leads to an obsession with her ability to procreate. Girl Before a Mirror is a large five foot tall oil painting that is almost life size. Pablo Picasso utilizes different oval, circular and diamond exaggerated shapes, as well as sharp lines to differentiate the face profiles. These shapes expressively overlap one another. Picasso developed many bold and vivid colors to his painting to intensify both the main focal point, of the girl's face and the face of her reflection as well as the rest of the canvas. Picasso's painting is well proportioned as he placed the mirror close to the vertical axis. By doing so Picasso has divided the painting into two, where the girl is to the left and her reflection is to the righ

Immigration Barriers for the Jewish

The rise to power of Hitler in early 1933, and the establishment of Nazism in Germany, led in the remaining years of the 1930's to a set of increasingly severe measures against Jews that were to end, in the course of the Second World War, with the Holocaust, an attempt to annihilate an entire people and in which an estimated 6 million European Jews were to die. Canada's decision to refuse the allowance of Jewish refugees during the Nazi era was correct. Canada admitted approximately 5000 Jewish refugees in the ˜30s. Because of the horrible Great Depression and causes of anti-Jewish prejudices and discrimination, the entry of Jewish peoples remained at an extremely low rate. The Great Depression had major effects on the refusal of Jewish Immigrants during the 1930's. T

Illusion in The Great Gatsby

Reality is the state of the world and how it really is, whereas an illusion is a false interpretation of reality. Illusions often deflect people from their sanity, as they cause them to recklessly drown away their lives in the sea of false beliefs. As a result, the outcomes for these people, and the people around them, are often awful. F.Scott Fitzgerald was proficient with the use of illusion and deception in the creation of the characters. In the novel The Great Gatsby, many of the characters build their whole lives on illusion. The characters Gatsby,Tom Buchanan and Daisy Buchanan outline themselves with false images to escape from reality and conform with society. Gatsby tells slight fibs about his life before the fame to create the impression that he was always wealthy and successful. Tom attempts to simulate that he is a quality man with good morals when in fact he is on the flip-side. Lastly, Daisy, the sorcerer of deception, strives to come off as an unintelligent mistress of T

Teaching and Differentiated Instruction

One of the major factors in helping effective teaching is differentiated instruction. What is the differentiation instruction? The National Curriculum Council defined it as "the process by which curriculum objectives, teaching methods, assessment methods, resources and learning activities are planned to cater for the needs of individual pupils". Differentiated lesson beyond the pupils' learning that take place gives many advantages. Teachers who differentiated their lesson in the mixed ability classroom find that it will lead to increased students' achievement and offer quality education. In their investigation, Stavroula, Leonidas and Mary (2011) showed that differentiation promotes all students to improve their achievement. The study was concerning the application of differentiated instruction in mixed ability classes, in which Cypriot pupils participated and provides evidence about the effect that differentiated instruction in mixed ability classes has on students' achievement. The results of the experimental group that had received differentiated instruction were compared with the results of the control group that had not received differentiated instructio

Herman Melville and Politics

If we are to see in the Pequod under Ahab a symbol of the teleocratic state, of the state conceived as a mechanism for achieving a substantive purpose [note oakeshott phrase earlier], we first need to identify precisely what distinguishes the hunting of Moby-Dick from the hunting of sperm whales generally, and why this difference points towards two essentially different visions of the state. After all, the hunting of one particular sperm whale for vengeance does not seem more purposeful than hunting sperm whales generally for profit; the latter no less than the former aims at an easily specified end. If we concentrate on the similarly purposeful quality of the quest for vengeance and toil for profit, Moby-Dick might present itself most readily as a critique merely of some kinds of state-mandated purpose, rather than as the more radical critique of end-driven societies that I am proposing it is. A clue to what is qualitatively distinct about Ahab's purposefulness, however, can be fo

Influences of Civil Disobedience

The famous Greek philosopher Aristotle once said, "It is not always the same thing to be a good man and a good citizen." Throughout American history there have been good, well intentioned people, that have not been perceived as good citizens because they broke the law for what they believed was a just cause. For example, Henry David Thoreau was one of these people. Thoreau, the Transcendentalist author of Civil Disobedience, published in 1849 influenced a number of people that shared his views on social justice. Two of which were Howard Zinn, a Historian of Social Movements who wrote "An Introduction To Thoreau's Works," in 2003 and Martin Luther King Jr., who published, "Letter from a Birmingham Jail" in 1963, which focussed on Birmingham, Alabama's unfair segregation laws. Both written works reflected the powerful ideas of Henry David Thoreau's, Civil Disobedience. Thoreau, King, and Zinn all addressed the political ideas of protecting the civil rights o

Letter Intent - Management School

Dear Sir, Madam I am writing this letter to express my interest in the Maastricht School of Management Executive MBA Program in Romania. As I recently had the privilege to assist to one of the classes in the program, I must say it was a great experience and I now strongly believe that the program will bring a substantial contribution to my personal and professional development. After a thorough research into your program, I was pleased with your educational policies and the culturally and professionally diverse environment. I am convinced that it is the right framework for both learning as well as sharing my experiences and knowledge. In terms of professional experience, starting 2008 I h

Perceptions in Marketing

If I was going to design a package for a new premium chocolate bar for an affluent market I, would first recommend an upscale looking package. The inside packaging would be gold foil, and it would cover the candy bar. The gold color gives a sense of richness and better quality. The outside of the packaging would be in brown, blue, and gold. These are colors that are appealing to the eye yet not overwhelming. The font on the packaging would be a font such as Lucinda Calligraphy because it is a more upscale looking font. An upscale candy bar would be marketed for adults. Therefore, the packaging would be neat and simple. It would not be cluttered with pictures or too many words.  Marketing to a wealthy audience I would want to assure the fact that the chocolate used to make the candy bar was high-end and advertise that on the front of the p

Why I Joined the Military

Prior to joining the Marine Corps I was a high school drop out. I used to hang out with the wrong crowd and rarely went to school to the point that they told me I could not graduate high school without transferring into independent studies. I would have to make up for a years worth of credits in one semester to graduate. I transfered into independent studies and dropped out of that program a month later. This was at seventeen years old. I started working at an auto shop around that time and planned on getting my GED. I procrastinated getting a GED until I was nineteen years old and finally went to the adult school in my area to sign up for the test. I took the test without taking any pre-test classes or reviews and scored so high that the proctor asked why I'm not attending a four year university and how did I ended up in the situation I was in. I told her the same story that I'm telling you today. I received my GED, kept working at the same auto shop, and kept hanging out with the same friends. A few months later I enrolled in my area's community

Business and Globalization

Globalization has a significant impact on product strategy and the decision to standardize or adapt products to global markets. There are several things that impact this decision. First is the laws and regulations in the target market. For example, peoples taste preferences vary from market to market and some countries enact product content regulations. Cultural differences also play another important factor. Companies typically adapt their products to suit the preferences of the local buyers which are typically rooted deep within their culture such as Haagen Dazs did when t created its green tea flavored ice cream for Japan. Brand and product names are another issue affected by globalization. While brand names do not typically offend people in international markets, product names can be highly offensive or may mislead customers and translate poorly in the local language. The National image of the country is another considerations while products being made in some countries may mak

Woodrow Wilson and Immigration Laws

Metropolitan America Evolution of immigration restrictions in the 20th century and President Wilson's role Some Americans need hyphens in their names because only part of them has come over; but when the whole man has come over, heart and thought and all, the hyphen drops of its own weight out of his name. This man was not an Irish-American; he was an Irishman who became an American. Woodrow Wilson (1914) When Woodrow Wilson arrived to the White House on March 4, 1913, the anti-immigrant sentiment was already established in society and politics in the United States. After the last two decades of the 19th century and the early 20th century, the rate of immigration to the United States from southern and Eastern Europe had grown in wealth, bringing their customs, religions and cultures. While immigration grew in number, the political reactions and decisions were doing it. The purpose of this essay is to show the evolution of restrictive policies on immigration during the first decades o

The Formation of Maternal Attachments

We have now considered in some detail the way in which infants develop strong attachment bonds towards the end of the first year of life. Bowlby believes that it is essential for infants and young children to experience a warm, intimate and continuous relationship with their mother or permanent mother substitute. What outcomes, then, can we expect if the child suffers some interruption in this relationship? This may be temporarily, for example as a result of hospitalisation or being placed in the care of the Local Authority on either a short of long term basis, or even a permanent interruption as a result of the death of the main attachment figure. Bowlby even considered that children whose mothers returned to work suffered a type of partial separation. If you consider that between 1950 and 1954 28% of women returned to work before their children were aged 5 years whereas between 1975 and 1979 this figure was 58% you can see that this is certainly an important issue which psychologists

The Spirit of America Trip

Throughout the Spirit of America trip, I visited many different places and some destinations became very meaningful to me. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum was very meaningful to me because I am Jewish and in turn has tied me to the events of the Holocaust. Because I have been and still am being raised in a Jewish neighborhood and lifestyle, I have been subjected to the events of the Holocaust since I was only a few years old. At the time, and even up until this past year in History class, I couldn't really understand the long lasting effects and the horrific lives the Jewish prisoners had suffered. Being at the Holocaust Memorial Museum was the first time I had experienced the true effects of the Holocaust because it took a victimized stance of the Holocaust, as opposed to a more neutral stance from history class. If history class taught me what happened, then the Holocaust Memorial Museum showed me what happened. After walking underneath one of the signs of the entrance gates to Auschwitz, witnessing not one, but tw

Students, Sex and Pregnancy

As time passes, it seems as if the teenage pregnancy rate gets higher and higher, instead of decreasing. Some people inculpate it on how parents edified their teens when they were children. Others claim that the pregnancy rate is on the up because of the sex education curriculum that schools teach today. These parents feel that schools are sending the wrong message to their children. They feel that schools are teaching students that it is okay to have sex as long as it is protected sex. Some of the parents who are opposed to the current curriculum say that if there was a new curriculum that was based on the concept of abstinence and the cost of being pregnant, the teenage pregnancy rate would not be so high. With the current curriculum, schools are not teaching students about the urge of waiting to have sex. Instead, schools teach students about how to have protective sex. Even though schools teach students about protected sex, they do not remind students that there is still a possibi

Aspects of Spontaneous Language

The aspects of spontaneous language, is shown within Graham Norton's interview. His chat show has a history, of the humour side of spoken language. When the three guests came out, his tone raised, his pace quickened and he uses repetition. All of this, is to get the audience and the viewers at home geared up with excitement. The use of fillers during the interview, 'whoo, eh.' Is a clear sign that, the level of excitement on the stage, has made them, pause for a moment, and think of what to say next. Through the interview, the guests are asked continuous questions. During this, interruptions and overlaps occur. This is a sign of spontaneous talk. The question that Norton asks all three guests, 'You all know each other' is a rhetorical question, but the three of them respond at the same time, with repetition of the same word 'Yes.' There are many more characteristics of spontaneous language. Slang is used often, false starts occur and invective words are used when, Sm

Russia as a Transitional Economy

A country's transitional economy is one which is changing from a centrally planned economy to a market economy. Russia, also known as the Russian Federation, is a country in northern Eurasia. It is a federal semi-presidential republic which is currently ruled by Vladimir Putin. Russia is the largest country in the world, covering one-eight of the worlds inhabited area. It has a developed, high-income market economy with a huge variety of natural resources such as oil and natural gas. Russia today has the 9th largest economy in the world by GDP and the 6th largest by purchasing power parity (PPP). After Mikhail Gorbachev came into power as the leader of the Soviet Union, continuing the economic liberalisation moved the economy towards a market-oriented socialist economy. All of the factors that started to change contributed to the final dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. The end of development and progress that would consume the last years of the Soviet Union was caused by poor go

Healthcare Access

Abstract This paper covers the need for accessibility to an affordable healthcare plan here in the United States of America. The resources and ability has always been available to be used to create a system that treats all of us. The problem has been in the public eye for many years. The problem has been how to implement the process effectively. The middle and upper class have had little issues during the years without a solid plan. The less affluent and self-employed have carried the largest numbers that have the least insured and the least amount of access. Being poor is not a simile for being sick and not having access to affordable care. Affordable Access to Healthcare in the United States The individual mandate, officially called a shared responsibility fee, is part of what is known as the individual shared responsibility provision. The provision explains that The federal government, state governments, insurers, employers and individuals are given shared responsibility to reform

CEO's and the Board of Directors

Todays world of business is often overshadowed with news about big banks, large corporations who don't pay employees enough, and CEOs who make up to 300 times more than their average employee. One can argue that these headliners shouldn't be an issue and its the free market at work. But what about companies that aren't in existence to profit for shareholders? Nonprofit organizations use the same corporate structure as for profit corporations but news outlets seem to focus only on companies like General Electric, Ford, Bank of America, etc. Just because nonprofits aren't benefiting shareholders does not mean their governance structure is fool-proof. Two common issues that corporations face are executive compensation and board of director accountability. Companies must make sure the shareholders are content with their CEO compensation package. They must hold their board accountable for all business decisions as well. But since nonprofits don't work for shareholders, how do we make sure C

Tesing Fats, Starches and Sugars

Purpose For each test ran in each separate lab with each separate reagent, there is a known positive and negative result. We want to see which substances will test negative or positive for containing Sugar or Fat Molecules. Hypothesis Sugar – If we test DI Water for sugar I didn't expect it to test positive. I was correct. H2O doesn't naturally contain any sugars. If we test Starch for sugar I did expect it to test positive for sugar but I was incorrect. I expected this because starches and sugars are in the same food group on the food pyramid, I was always taught they were both unhealthy interchangeable molecules. If we test any type of sucrose level, either one or ten percent I did expect it to test positive for sugar and I was correct. I believed that sucrose was a liquefied version of sugar molecules. If we tested onion juice for sugar content, I didn't believe it would test positive for sugar because there is nothing sweet about an onion. Surprisingly I was incorrect and the onion juice actually contained the highest level of sugar content. Fats If we place a drop of

Choosing a Public or Private School

When deciding on whether public or private school is better for your child there are a few things to consider. Class size, admissions, curriculum and tuition are just a to name a few. As we know, private schools are portrayed to be good if not better for our kids, for a number of reasons. The number one reason private schools are deemed better than public school is because of smaller class sizes. Private schools can afford to keep class sizes small, therefore providing more frequent interaction and attention on the teacher-student level. Also, small classes allow the teachers to have a better sense of who your child is, and what his or her particular strengths or weaknesses are. Due to smaller class sizes, students of private schools aren't afraid to ask questions and participate in class, because they feel comfortable and close to their fellow students and teachers. Unlike public schools, private schools are not obligated to accept every child, and in many priva

King Duncan and Macbeth

In Shakespeare's play, Macbeth, there are a numerous amount of pessimistic characters. In the play there are evil and supernatural characters such as the three witches, there are manipulators like Lady Macbeth, and there are even murderers in the play such as Macbeth. One character who represents more positive traits than negative is King Duncan. King Duncan, too has flaws as the other characters do, but throughout most of his time in the play, King Duncan has a positive reputation and possesses admirable traits. Three character traits, positive and negative, that King Duncan reveals, are benevolence, weakness, and compassion. Another thing that King Duncan relates to, is the play's theme of the disruption of reality or nature. King Duncan is a very benevolent character in the play: "You are welcome here. By making you thane of Cawdor, I have planted the seeds of a great career for you, and I will make sure they grow. (to BANQUO) Noble Banquo, you deserve no less than Macbeth, and ever

Gun Control Isn't Crime Control

"The right to bear arms," is an amendment so prioritized by our founding fathers that it earned the very second spot on the list of birth rights as Americans. However, with constant disasters striking the United States, such as massacres in public high schools and universities, mall shootings, and attempted assassinations on state representatives, it's no wonder law makers are constantly debating the topic of gun control. The history of firearms has changed dramatically since the late 1700's. A rifle is no longer defined as a single shot, muzzle loading musket. Should modernized, high caliber, automatic rifles and handguns be protected by an amendment written nearly 250 years ago? Should the second amendment be eliminated altogether? Or regulated, perhaps? If so, to what degree? All these questions are what trigger extensive debates in Washington D.C. regarding what the founding fathers intended the amendment to be. In the article, "Gun Control Isn't Crime Control", th
