Overview of the Progressive Era

The Progressive Movement was an effort to cure American society of many of the ill ideals that had developed during the late 19th and the early 20th centuries because of the rapid spurt of industrial growth. Through this movement Americans struggled to cope with a wide range of social, economic, and political changes. Those who advocated or implemented social reform or new, liberal ideas were known as Progressives, which would later become a political party in 1912. This era saw the expansion of political and economic freedom through the renewed effort for women's suffrage, the use of political power to expand workers' rights, and efforts to improve democratic government by weakening the power of capitalists and giving everyday citizens more influence in legislation. To show the American public the reality of society and encourage them to improve these issues, the progressives focused on matters like slums, horrible working conditions, child labor, and poverty. Prison and the Idaho Gladiator School

Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) contracts with the state of Idaho to manage some of the state's prisons. CCA, runs the largest prison in the state called Idaho Correction Center or (ICC). ICC according to an Associated Press (AP) report, has more incidents of violence than all of Idaho's prisons combined. The prison is so violent that inmates have nick-named it the "gladiator school"." Lawsuits filed against CCA, its employees and the state of Idaho have alleged issues from sexual assault, employee indifference or incitement of violence to officials at CCA turning the prison over to gangs and understaffing to save money. Ethical and Legal Issues Whether some is a police officer, security officer or a prison guard there is an ethical and legal obligation to protect life and property in that order. Short Story - Summertime

The bell rang for the last time at the middle school. It was a shrill sound of freedom, happiness, and SUMMER VACATION!!! Everyone jumped out of their seats and hollered and hooted with glee. Everyone except Harley. All he wanted was a normal summer filled with fun and vacation. A sweet summer, an awesome summer, a fantastic summer! But noooo, his parents just had to force him to study, study, and study. Harley kicked an empty soda can in frustration. Why couldn't they see that he was just a normal teenager that wanted to have some free time to hang out with friends and play video games? After walking for a few minutes, he arrived at the front door of his family's apartment. He quietly gripped the door knob. Harley decided that if he could slip inside, he would get some free time. The door slowly opened with a rusty creak and he peeked inside. Coast clear he said into the imaginary radio inside his head. Harley silently laughed to himself. Sneaking into his own house like a burglar was

Please, Do Not Feed the Homeless

"Give me your tired, your poor Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free The wretched refuse of your teeming shore Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" - Emma Lazarus Engraved upon the pedestal of America's prominent symbol of freedom and equality – The Statue of Liberty – are these lines from Emma Lazarus' distinguished poem, "The New Colossus." Lazarus' words embody the sentiment of generosity and compassion that has made our Republic one of the most altruistic societies in the world. Our citizens fight for equality and tolerance regarding matters of race, sex, employment, marriage, education, religion, wages, and freedom for all. Our hearts bleed and our wallets open at the slightest provocation to help others all over the world to live a better life. In fact, in 2013, the United States led the world in humanitarian aid donations (GHA). Nevertheless, one group continually falls through the cracks – the

Avant-Garde Music

As a great lover and listener of music, I prefer music that flows, has distinct melodies and is very appealing to listen to. However, I am very open to learning about other types of music. One of the most interesting I have found in this class is Avant-Garde. Literally translated it means "fore-guard, " or, music ahead of its time. It refers to experimental and innovative people and works with a driving force in respect to culture, art and or politics. Part of the experimentalism associated with this style is the fusing of unusual genres. Many of these combinations contain unique and original features varying from composer to composer. Something that I find truly fascinating about this style is that it leaves a lot up to the composer's imagination. It opens up

Putting the Brakes on Ebola

Imagine watching a literal train wreck; but its online, and its live. Just before the train crashes, slams into and most likely kills a car full of helpless people, the computer freezes and won't load. The colorful spinning wheel of death comes up and you sit there not knowing whether all those people were crushed, or if the train was able to stop in time. Wondering if at that exact moment you're sitting there staring at your loading computer screen, if there is a car smashed in by a multi-ton pile of metal. Its a horrible thought, right? The unknown...To be honest that's one of my biggest fears is the unknown. Now imagine this. One of the most deadly viruses of all human existence is advancing towards you, its only seven hours, one airport and one taxi ride TV from infecting you. Doesn't it make the train wreck seem not that bad. Especially considering that its possible and its real, and it will happen if certain people don't take certain steps. Travel ban from certain eastern countries, I believe, is one of these very important choices that need to be made in ord

Bernie Maddoff and the $65 Billion Ponzi Scheme

On December 08, 2008, outside his Manhattan apartment, Bernie Madoff was arrested for the biggest financial scandal in history. Madoff ran a Ponzi scheme for nearly 20 years that amounted to $65 billion. Mr. Madoff persuaded high end investors to believe he could invest their money for a guaranteed fifteen percent return. Although this seemed nearly impossible to some, he had proven himself to many, including many prominent individuals like fashion designer Carl Shapiro and Hollywood director Stephen Spielburg. Later in March of 2009, Bernie Madoff was convicted, charged, and sentenced to 150 years in prison for security fraud, money laundering, and perjury at the federal level. There is no denying that the world was devastated and shocked that Mr. Madoff was exposed as a scandalous financial crook. For Bernie Madoff to instigate a Ponzi scheme of this magnitude, his infamous heist requires several important character traits: extensive knowledge, fearlessness for risk, and an absence o

Frank Jackson - Seeing Color

Frank Jackson, in his essay Epiphenomenal Qualia, proposes the knowledge argument. It is a philosophical thought experiment to argue against Physicalism, the notion that all that is mental is entirely physical. Therefore, Jackson argues that there are aspects of mental consciousness that cannot be fully explained by the physical nature of the brain. In this thought experiment, Mary, a brilliant scientist, has been kept prisoner since birth in a black and white laboratory. She has lived and worked through having to learn about the world from a black and white screen, and knows everything physical there is to know about the brain and color. Jackson theorizes that if Mary experiences color first-hand by leaving the room, or by obtaining a screen that uses color, she will learn new information. Mary is then let out of her laboratory for the first time, experiences color, and is surprised. Before she was released, Mary had lacked knowledge about human color that she later gained once she ha

Hitting Rock Bottom

June 2007 was a wakeup call for me. I had hit rock bottom. I hadn't done anything with my life and I just turned 36. I decided to change my life around and be the person everyone had told me I could be. I started believing in myself and was ready to take the next step in getting back on track. I completely stopped drinking and I began distancing myself from my old "drinking buddies" and got out of the construction and painting business. I took the first step in getting help by attending AA meetings 3 times a week and getting myself a sponsor. With the help of my sponsor and my family I started making plans to go back to school to start a new career. I met my wife 6 months into my sobriety. So my support system was growing and my life was getting stable enough for me to begin school. I started taking general educations classes at College of The Sequoias in 2008. I always had an interest in the nursing field, so I decided to start by going to the Visalia Adult School and take the CNA course. That wasn't good enough for me, I wanted to learn more and take my career further.

Bilbo Baggins and a Hero's Journey

Bilbo was one you would never expect to do anything unexpected. He was well respected and renowned in the land of the Shire, being one who scoffed and crinkled his nose at the thought of adventure. But once tangled into the fate of a wizard, one named Gandalf the Grey, and a company of dwarves, Bilbo's opinion changed within the span of a single night. But he does more than that, he transforms into a hero. This story very closely follows the hero's journey beginning to end except where a few steps come out of the usual order. Starting with the "call to adventure", this is clearly portrayed as Gandalf expresses their need of someone in which to share an adventure. Closely following is the "refusal of the call", in which Bilbo shares that the discomfort that he views adventures as. "I should think so – in these parts! We are quite plain folk and have no use for adventures. Nasty, dirty, uncomfortable things! Make you late for dinner! I can't think what anyb

Abstract Businesses implement various strategies in order to sustain in the competitive market. Depending on the business type and culture, these strategies are founded on a firm's vision, mission, and goals. Social Issues and a Social Contract

I am a freshman in the Criminal Justice major here at Saint Joseph's University. I took this course because of the interest in social issues that I gained from taking Introduction to Sociology with Dr. Brown last semester. Some of the main topics that we covered were deviance, social control, poverty, race, and gender. Of these broad areas of subject matter, the one that intrigued me the most was poverty. I never considered how poverty could be so contingent upon purely opportunity. This was before Dr. Brown showed us the Moving to Opportunity for Fair Housing study (MTO). The results of this study shocked and intrigued me in ways in which I could not have imagined. MTO implied that if income is not the main source of poverty, social division/segregation is. Knowing that you're fully educated in this matter, I just wanted to say that my glaring lack of knowledge in regards to the subject of poverty is what drove me to take Social Problems. The idea of poverty fascinates and concerns me

Slaves and the Right for Freedom

Slavery in the U.S, which began when African slaves were brought to America, had spread throughout the colonies in the 17th and 18th centuries. According to George Fitzhugh's and Thomas Dew's views, slaves were claimed to be, in a sense, very free and content people, and their masters were beloved and appreciated. However, based on Seward's and Northup's documents, the above-mentioned claims are not accurate. In Fitzhugh's point of view, slaves actually had good lives. In his article, he writes, "The negro slaves of the South are the happiest, and, in some sense, the freest people in the world."1 This was because slaves had their food, clothes, shelter and everything needed for themselves and their families provided by their masters, although the condition and quality of such provisions were not mentioned. Fitzhugh also said that slaves did not hav

Antigone - State and Family

Question How does the theme of state vs family show the degeneration of Creons character? Response Family and state have played an important role in Greek culture for a very long time and have been integral parts of the Greek society. The play Antigone, by the Greek playwright Sophocles focuses on the conflict between the protagonist, Antigone and her uncle and king, Creon. This leads to one of the main themes of the play, the theme of State vs Family. Finding a balance between state and family is considered a very admirable trait in a person in the Greek society and one trait that every leader should possess. Unfortunately, Creon got so absorbed in his power and trying to restore order in the kingdom that he neglected about his family duties. This leads to many conflicts with various characters over the course of the play and also leads to the degeneration of Creons character. The play starts with the kingdom in absolute chaos due to the death of Polyneices and Eteocles, the two son

Hydrogen Fuel and Electric Cars

The world has been going through a crisis over the past 10 years involving energy sources. With major industries using more fossil fuels than ever, the world is starting to run out. Automobiles are one of the leading consumers of the most popular fossil fuel, gasoline. However, there is a solution to this crisis, hydrogen. For years scientists have been trying to find a more sustainable and abundant fuel for our economy, and they have figured out how to make hydrogen into fuel. The idea of hydrogen fuel isn't new, but it hasn't been utilized yet since it is so expensive to own a hydrogen powered car, and there are few hydrogen fueling stations. Now that we have figured out the solution to our problem, you would think that we would've shifted to this new hydrogen energy. Unfortunately the idea of hydrogen fuel needs to become more popular. Furthermore, we as a society need to shift from our natural habits and make a change that is better for ourselves, the economy, and the planet. The world needs to work together to solve this problem. Countries are too competitive about being "number one" and about having the most money. If all the big ind

The Case of Madison Vs. Arizona

The Madison vs. Arizona case was decided by the court in 1966. Ernesto Miranda was a poor man living in Phoenix, Arizona, in 1963. Miranda was arrested after being identified by his victim. Miranda's charges were rape, kidnapping, and robbery. He was interrogated for two hours while in police custody. The police officers questioning him did not inform him of his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination, or of his Sixth Amendment right to the assistance of an attorney. As a result of the interrogation, Miranda had written down a confession to all of those crimes he was charged with. During his trial, the prosecution used his confession to obtain a conviction, and he was sentenced to 20 to 30 years in prison. Miranda's defense attorney appealed to the Arizona Supreme Court. His attorney argued that his confession should have been excluded from trial because he had not been informed of his rights, nor had an attorney been present during his interrogation. The police officers invol

Anthem and the Role of Women

"I am woman, hear me roar/ In numbers too big to ignore and I've been down there on the floor/ No one's ever gonna keep me down again" say the lyrics of the song "I am woman," by the singer Helen Reddy. This song demonstrates the position women are submitted into and advances a notion of having the women's role as an instigator for change. In the novel Anthem by Ayn Rand, the woman figure is Liberty 5-3000 and the male figure is Equality 7-2521. The novel maintains that "women are forbidden to take notice of men" (Rand 38). The role of Liberty displayed throughout Anthem restricts and limits the viewpoint that men have on women. The restrictions on the individual in Anthem are advanced to such an extreme that the members of this society are robbed of personal decision-making processes. The people do not get to choose their career, for the te

Hybrid Cars and the Environment

Pollution, global warming, and preservation of the environment are controversial topics today. Air pollution is the most common environmental issue that is caused by contaminates that change the natural characteristics of the atmosphere and it can cause respiratory diseases. Particulate matter, carbon monoxide, ozone, nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide concern the public the most (WHO). The leading cause of air pollution is cars running on gasoline. Hybrid cars can be the solution to dramatically reducing air pollution, however many people aren't aware how hybrid cars are an advantage to the environment and how they can benefit the owners. Air pollution due to cars affects the air we breathe, the ozone layer, water, and soil. Driving a gas run car involves combustion of fossil fuels where gases are emitted that affect the environment. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, more than half of air pollution in the USA is caused by mobile sources, mainly automobiles (EPA). When a car's engine is on, gases are emitted into the air such as carbon dioxide which is a greenhouse gas, hydrocarbons, nitrogen dioxide, carbon

Samuel Colt's Revolver

Western expansion in America would not have been possible without Samuel Colt's revolver; he revolutionized firearms and shaped our country. His revolver was the first multi shot in America. It proved helpful in Westward expansion. It allowed outnumbered men to fight off their opponents. Americans would fight Native Americans and Mexicans in the struggle for land. The opposition often times greatly outnumbered them, but the Colt Revolver was able to even out the odds and push them to victory. Colt was a strong willed man who never settled for second, "If I can't be first I won't be second in anything" (Samuel Colt, I Won't Be Second). This attitude is the reason he became an American hero, and a reason why his revolver eventually became the wrecking force of a powerful American military. Samuel Colt was exposed to inventing and building at an early age, his interest in the subject came as no surprise because he worked in his father's textile mill as a boy. Experiences like

Those countries included Germany, Italy and Japan who eventually became the main Axis powers of WWII. Positive Karma and Success

Life is a precious gift given to every living person on the planet. It is meant to enjoy and discover new things in life. As a part of our lives, we are expected to meet the expectations imposed on us by the society. Those expectations could be being good members in the society, being successful in life and providing for one's family. Every man wants to meet those expectations. However, the society also wants us to achieve our goals in life through virtue, hard work and honesty. It does not matter what one achieves in life but how one achieves it. The society will explicitly disregard what the person has achieved if he has achieved his goals by dishonesty and by causing harm to others. In life, we come across many challenges. Some of them make us who we are while some tell us what we should be. Life is a journey and not a destination. It matters a lot of how we do things to achieve our destination. There will be struggle and there definitely will be bad days. Days that would never seem to end. Days which would go on and on and would keep hurting us till the end. Most of us actually wou
