The Wisdom of Socrates

It has always been said that Socrates was wise, wise in years, wise in speech, wise in the virtuous life. His words inspired others to follow him, and, although he never claimed to be a teacher, taught others indirectly. Did he explicitly teach others his ways? Not necessarily, but rather, he, through his active discussions, allowed others to learn from him and his logical way of thinking. He led by example. Was it really wisdom that he possessed? It can be inferred, examining the lifestyle that he led, that yes, wisdom was prevalent throughout his life. The reason for this assertion is due to the fact that Socrates focused on the soul and living a life of virtue. Something that Socrates said was that virtue was not teachable. He said this in Protagoras in his discussion, and he defended his position against Protagoras, who was saying that virtue is teachable. If virtue is not teachable, and wisdom is not acquired through teachings, how can a person focus on the welfare of his or her s

Keeping Older Adults in the Workforce

The eminent psychiatrist, Viktor Frankl, while suffering numerous hardships in his life as a prisoner of war in a Nazi work camp that included, being isolated from the rest of the world including his family. Along with the prospect of facing death at the hands of his captors, began to question the meaning of his existence and the meaning of life in general. Frankl eventually came to the conclusion that people derive meaning from their lives as either as a result of their suffering, their ability to love another, and their work (Frankl, 2011). A person's work helps them to define a sense of themselves. Moreover, can contribute to their feeling of usefulness, and helps to keep them active (Frankl, 2011; Shacklock, 2006; Waddell & Burton, 2006). These benefits occur at any age; therefore, by continuing to remain in the workforce elderly people can both produce benefits to their community and receive benefits beyond mere income from their employment. Conclusions based on empirical evidenc

Changing America's Education System

The United States is a magnificent melting pot of ethnicity, religion, and opinions. Everyone here picks a side for nearly everything, even if they say they don't, they know that they do. While we usually have our own personal views on everything from something as large as gay marriage laws, to something as small as our favorite type of soda, there's one all Americans agree on: that we are the best country of them all. It has to be true, but how do we know it? How is "The Best Country in the World"" determined? Our nationalism and country's morale is exceptional, but our debt, unemployment, and poverty levels are exceptional as well. There is no perfect measurement accurate enough to decide who is the best overall. As far as education goes, we have been dragging behind for quite some time now. The corruption and low-levels of efficiency in America's public school system need to be changed to better the future of today's students. We may think and say we're just as good or better tha

Four Daughters Winery - Marketing Proposal

Wine is a popular beverage for the young, old, and in-between. There are many wineries throughout that world who produce their own special recipes. Four Daughters Winery is one of Minnesota's largest wineries located in Spring Valley, just south of Stewartville. Their main objective is making and bottling their own specialty wine right on sight. Customers can then buy bottles of wine, have a glass on site, or enjoy a wine tasting. The Vogt Family opened the winery in 2011, which consists of the parents, along with their four daughters, and their husbands. In just 3 short years, they have grown their business into a profitable establishment with expansion plans currently in the making. Along with their expansion, they are now offering a less expensive wine variety for purchase in some Minnesota liquor stores. Four Daughters also provides meals and appetizers at a premium cost for those who would like to add to their experience at the winery, such as brie and artichoke pizza and prosci

College Students and Class Attendance

Summary Professors are trying different ideas to find out if showing up for class really affects students' grades. Some professors are making attendance a portion of their students' grades. The ones that do so, think it helps first year students develop good habits with college being new to them. The sort of student that attended college classes most as difficult to figure out. The only small factor was gender, with men tending to skip class more than women. Some students choose to skip class if they can get the same information online as they can in class. As said in the article, professors are trying to encourage students to come to class more often by making their classes more entertaining. Essay I agree that professors should take attendance as a part of the students' grade. With attendance being a part of their grade, I think it'll encourage studen

Analysis of George Orwell's 1984

1984 is a classic dystopian novel published in 1949 by George Orwell that has influenced generations of writers and thinkers. Within 1984 there are various recurring themes involving "homelessness", an "encounter with nothingness" and the "nostalgia for the absolute". Throughout this essay I will be dwelling into the various ways that Orwell depicts these concepts within his book 1984. 1984 is one of Orwell's best made novels, and it remains one of the most powerful warnings ever issued against the dangers of a totalitarian society. In Spain, Germany, and the Soviet Union, Orwell had witnessed the danger of absolute political authority in an age of advanced technology. He illustrated that peril harshly in 1984 in the hopes of bringing to light the dangerous aspects of a totalitarian society to prevent a possible rise in totalitarianism within western society. The world of 1984 also reflects various aspects of the social and political life of both the United Kingdom and the United State

Virginia Woolf - Depictions of Sexism

Virginia Woolf uses a sarcastic, mocking tone to express her attitude toward women's place in society as she describes the two different meals she was served during a university visit. She uses two separate passages to compare and contrast the roles of men and women in society, showing how society regards men to be better than women. In the first passage, Woolf describes the lavish lives of men. She uses diction such as "counterpane," "branded," "retinue," "foliated" and "confection" to express a sophisticated and intellectual event as she describes the men's lunch. The superlative "whitest cream" portrays how men get the best treatment. Diction such as "succulent" describes the sensual joys that the meals bring to the men, who are well-deserving of this meal, and "silent serving-man" displays the elegance of men's lives. Woolf also employs a hyperbole to add to the flamboyance of the rice pudding by calling it a

A Bomb in Dahieh

The best summers are those that I spent in Lebanon. We would spend the weeks in Lebanon going sightseeing, going to beach resorts, and visiting family. The trips are always relaxing and carefree because all one can do is have fun in such a beautiful and lively place. Being of Middle Eastern descent comes with having a large extended family on my mom's and dad's side. I have so much family that every visit to Lebanon, I discover new family members I have never met before. My dad's side of the family lives in the outskirts of Beirut and my mom's side of the family live in the suburbs directly south of Beirut. Two days after our arrival, we decided to visit my mom's side of the family for the day. A complex political controversy was taking place and dangerous militias were causing havoc, without notice, when they felt like it. My mom's side resides in the Dahieh, which is the extremely crowded and dangerous part of the country where the spiteful mayhem occurs left and right. My mom want

The Go-Between - Writing Analysis

The most fundamental right is the right to life. Human rights are protected and safeguarded by human conventions and they include many different areas – among those are the right to freedom of movement and the right to seek asylum. However, even though most countries have signed the conventions, they do not always follow them. Every day human rights are being violated and the short story "The Go-Between" by Ali Smith (2009) is dealing with exactly that topic – people fleeing from their homes to go to other places to find freedom and safety. And the degree of desperation the refugees feel are enormous as nobody flees just for the fun of it "Nobody leave home unless home is the mouth of a shark" (l. 80). It tells the story of a 33-year-old man from Cameroon educated as a microbiologist. He is a good sportsman and swimmer and has made his way through Africa to Morocco where he is trying to make a living while he is attempting for the third time to cross th

Integrated Marketing Communications in Rural India

In today's ever changing "Nanosecond Culture" of social networks, empowered customers and hyper competition, we need to be prepared to immediately implement holistic thinking for our marketing and communications strategy. With an increase in global competition, technological advances, and fast informed customers, it is important for businesses to make a powerful impact on target audiences and markets. Integrated Marketing Communication (IMC) is one of the most important communications trends adopted all over. It is one such step toward an integrated approach to achieving efficiency by synergy. The emergence of this concept has become one of the most significant examples of development in the marketing discipline. It has influenced thinking and acting among companies but also authorities, state owned companies and political parties, all facing the realities of competition in an open economy. As a concept IMC has become well known on an international scale during the 1990s. Th

Shakespearean Villains - Tybalt and Don John

Shakespeare's tragedy "Romeo and Juliet" and his comedy "Much Ado About Nothing" contain protagonists, but it's the antagonists that have a greater impact on the play. The storylines have many similarities, and many comparisons can also be made regarding to the villains and how they impact the storyline. The main villain in "Romeo and Juliet" is Tybalt who is Juliet's cousin from the Capulet house. He is hot-blooded and fiery-natured, so it is most of his actions that lead to the tragedy in the play. The main villain of "Much Ado" is Don John who is the illegitimate brother of Don Pedro, the Prince of Arragon. There are may other, less obvious villains in both plays, a few of them being Romeo, Mercutio, Friar Lawrence, and the Capulet and Montague house parents in "Romeo and Juliet" as they participate in the tragedy that happens in the play. In "Much Ado" Claudio, Don Pedro, and to some extent, Leonato can be perceived as villains by a modern audience as their actions reflect the c

The Hunger Games - Katniss' Rebellion

Throughout life, the events that people encounter can fundamentally influence change. In the Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins, Katniss Everdeen, whose only priority was her family, is moulded into a symbol of rebellion representing Panem's struggling districts. Throughout the novel, the protagonist is constantly exposed to the Capitol's cruel acts representing the resentment for the Capitol's residents. This leads to the action of rebellion against the government prior to the Hunger Games and during the competition. Lastly, her beliefs about the destruction of the Capitol is reinforced by the people she meets during the novel. Katniss' actions during the Hunger Games gave the struggling districts the hope and courage to rebel against their oppressors. Constant acts of cruelty begets resentment amongst people. In the case of Katniss, by constantly being exposed to the Capitol's cruelty, she begins to resent them. She also has an inherent understanding of the injustice caused by the Cap

Carbondale and Incarceration

A five-hour drive from Chicago on interstate 57 South will lead you to Southern Illinois. You will encounter towns such as "Marion," "Harrisburg," "Benton," and "West Frankfort." Arguably, the most notable town in Southern Illinois is "Carbondale." A turn on Highway 13 West will lead you to Carbondale. The town received its name due to the abundance of coal in the area. Besides that, the area is hilly and surrounded by woodlands. It has a population of nearly 26, 000 residents. However, because of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale (SIUC), the population can easily increase by 18,000 during the academic semesters. Of that student population, a considerable number of them are Chicagoans. The African American students have labeled the indigenous residents "Carbonites." Apparently, this label reflects an intra-cultural distinction. Like the most segregated large city in the United States, Chicago, Carbondale is segregated by race. Most African Americans live on the Northeast and East sides of the town whereas most of the Whites live on the West and South sides respectively. My family arrived in Carbondale in the early 1960s, but my uncles further migrat

Frankenstein - Novel and Movie Comparison

The novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley is an extremely classic gothic story that has been translated into many languages, and therefore has been influential in lots of countries. In addition to diverse language translations, Frankenstein by Mary Shelley has been adapted for televisions, plays, and films in particular. Among these different versions, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994) produced by Kenneth Branagh is a 1994 American horror movie considered the most faithful film adaptation of Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus. The film, however, has many remade parts in terms of settings, plots, and social issues although it is regarded as the most true-blue one. In other words, the film is still quite different from the novel; besides, the question of which one is better for the readers is being attendant. As a result, in contrast with Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, the film Mary Shelly's Frankenstein (1994) directed by Kenneth Branagh successfully presents far m

Aspects of Internet Communications

The evolution of technology has encouraged drastic change in our everyday life, especially in how we communicate. When the first satellite was launched, it was the trigger of the instantaneous and asynchronous communication era. Up until the present day, thousands of satellites have been launched and Internet-based communications, which started as early as the 1960s (Gharbawi, A. 2004, p. Online), has become a major role in our lives, in fact, a necessary role in humankind. The question is, as telecommunication is being massively used worldwide, what are the advantages and disadvantages of it, what safeguards should be implemented, and finally how internet-based communication can develop in the near future. This paper is written to analyze and describe the pros and cons of the current range of Internet communications including social networking, email, and instant messaging, alongside the safety measures for users, and the future development of these communications. Controversies Around the Iraq War

The United States military involvement in Iraq has been an area of concern for government officials and the American people as a whole. With the latest eruption in Iraq, the question of whether or not to send our troops back into the turmoil of a country that has a flimsy government and operating rebel and terrorist groups has President Obama strongly considering the possibility. Even if limited in our involvement by using air assaults and technology such as drones, the U.S. would more than likely harm Iraqi civilians in the process, send nationals flooding into the ISIS camps, and destruct an already fragile economic system. That would be a bad move for the U.S. military and one that would have repercussions. "An isolated U.S. is an unsafe country. Attacking Iraq without provocation will ignite anti-American sentiment around the world, disrupting efforts to weaken terrorist networks. While the benefits of invading Iraq are murky the costs are all- too- clear" (Global Exchange). ISIS (

Comparing the Present and the Past

"For my parents , however, those symbols became taunts, reminders of all they could not achieve in one lifetime. For me those same symbols are reassuring reminders of public success. I tempt vulgarity to be reassured. I am filled with the gaudy delight, the monstrous grace of the nouveau riche" (Rodriguez, 147). The description in this passage transmits the message with descriptive detail that Rodriguez did not grow up with the same mind and way of thinking as did his generation, including his parents. One is born with many traits and genes, including hair color, eye color, skin color, how they act or how they react to things. These come from either the traits you are physically born with, or moreover, watching how your parents act. This is where most of us learn, from watching our parents and learning about their past. We try to relive the stories they tell us, and make it our own. "I tempt vulgarity to be reassured." In this passage,

Young Chaos - Lord of the Flies and The Chocolate War

In the novel Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, Jack Merridew is a young boy who survives a plane crash on a stranded island with other boys. Among these boys there is Ralph, who tries to lead the boys towards focusing on being rescued and Jack, who leads the boys towards hunting and savagery. Later on in the novel, Jack becomes leader of a tribe on the island. He ends up not being able to handle this power given to him and creates chaos because of the anger that he builds up so easily. In the novel The Chocolate War, by Robert Cormier, there is a group called The Vigils. This group hands out awful assignments to their peers at school to keep "quiet on the campus""(12; ch.2) and to prevent riots. Archie Costello is the assigner (person who decides assignments) for The Vigils. Archie also cannot handle the power that comes along with this important title and creates chaos in Trinity High School. By behaving like Jack, Archie proves that you do not have to be removed from a civiliz

Thyroid Disease and the Unborn Fetus

During pregnancy, the fetus undergoes rapid changes during the course of development. Nutrition of the mother plays a vital role in the growth of the fetus. Certain deficiencies and diseases in the mother are known to have negative effects on the developing baby. If these deficiencies or diseases are left untreated, they may have long term effects on the infant after birth. One such disease known to have mild to severe effects on the developing fetus is thyroid disease. Thyroid disease, usually caused by an iodine deficiency, can cause several issues for both the mother and fetus during pregnancy. The most common effects caused by thyroid disease are fetal neurocognitive development, mental retardation, premature birth, low birth weight, and miscarriage. Treatment of thyroid disease during pregnancy is important to ensure healthy fetal development. The thyroid is a gland that produces hormones which affect human growth, use of energy, heat production, and more. Several factors are imp

Globalization and Barbados

Globalization is something that happens not only on the island of Barbados, but in every other country around the world. The process of globalization can be very fast, or progressively slow. Many factors can contribute to globalization and its effect on a country over time. In The Parish Behind God's Back I have seen many excellent examples of globalization in tourism, religion, and immigration, that effected the complete transformation of the tiny island. The examples I have found have changed the country, and still continue to do so today. Tourism was not always the main source of income of Barbados, but when sugar cane became more available throughout the world, the demand was not as high. Barbados had beautiful beaches and gorgeous terrain, with perfect weather year round. It began its start of tourism around "1960 as growing numbers of Europeans and North Americans began to travel with the advent of jet travel, more disposable income and vacation time, and affordable package tours, the Barbadian government began actively promoting tourism" (Gmelch, George, and Sharon Gmelch. The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence

SETI is an acronym that stands for Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (Lamb 2001). It refers to the efforts being done to detect the existence of technological civilizations present elsewhere in the universe. It is partly believed that there may be a possibility of life located billions of miles from the Earth's solar system (Shuch 2011). With current technology, it is possible to discover evidence of any habitation in the cosmos. Further, the use of ETI experiments is tasked to find if there are beings living in the universe, which are of the same or more advanced technological levels than that of humans. It is prudent to note that there is still no confirmed case where SETI search has received extraterrestrial signal. However, in the SETI experiments, there have been several intriguing and unexplained signals detected (Shuch 2011). One of these is the signal that was picked up in 1977 at the Ohio State Radio Observatory center. However, if such signals could be recovere

The Trials of Mary Rowlandson

Mary Rowlandson allowed her Puritan beliefs to shape her response to Native Americans and the way she understood and interpreted her captivity. For example, she referred to various Bible passages in her narrative, The Sovereignty and Goodness of God. In many instances, she described some event and then proceeded to make sense of it by referring to a Bible verse. For example, in the thirteenth remove she felt burdened by her captivity and wished to return home. To find comfort, she quoted Isaiah 54; 7: "For a small moment have I [The Lord] forsaken thee, but with great mercies will I gather thee" (90). As a strict Puritan, Rowlandson held beliefs that the Native Americans, or "heathens" as she called them, forbid her from performing. She always "celebrated" the Sabbath-day by attending church and resting afterwards. The Indians did not allow her to follow these practices. She asked them to let her rest on the Sabbath-day and perform twice the amou

Applying Ethical Frameworks in Practice

An ethical dilemma is a common type of situation that involves two or more morally correct courses of action that cannot both be followed, placing the agent in a precarious position (Purtilo & Doherty, 2011). Ethical dilemmas include the agent, or the responsible one, with two different courses of action that both lead to two different outcomes. The agent may be doing something right by taking one path, but are also wrong for not taking the other path. Ethical dilemmas involve weighing personal values, beliefs and sense of right and wrong. Therefore, it is important for the nurse to examine their own personal values, beliefs and morals when faced with ethical dilemmas. The ethical dilemma in this case scenario is that the six year old is considered a minor and therefore legally the physician must obtain consent from the legal guardian. However, the non-biological mother who has primary custody, is citing religious beliefs to refuse treatment, while the biological dad, who is in anot
