Christianity - From Beowulf to Sir GawainThrough looking at the texts of Beowulf and of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, we can clearly see the dramatic change in society's attitude regarding Christianity. From the time Beowulf was written in 750, until Sir Gawain's creation in 1400, there was a remarkable surge of interest in Christianity. This can be proven through comparing the epic and the romance. By analyzing the two, we, the reader, can undoubtedly notice the difference. It is obvious that Christianity had become the leading religion by the romance's conception in 1400 because of many reasons, particularly because the author automatically assumes that his audience has a certain comprehension of the religion and its stories, he doesn't only show negative aspects of other religions, and because he admits that mistakes are possible. We can see that Christianity had become the main religion by the time of Sir Gawain in its actual text. Had Christianity not been established as the dominant religion of the time, the author |

Memories of My GrandfatherI recollect the many wonderful memories of my grandfather, though they are distant. Whenever I need to find happiness, I go to a place in my soul where I find my Mamu-G still alive. Mamu-G didn't speak English. In my world, English was all I knew; which meant our relationship was based on expressions of love and faulty attempts to convey ourselves verbally. He always hoped to find someone who spoke his mother tongue, Urdu. He raised his children to speak Urdu, and hoped his grandchildren would also be able to connect to the family through language. However, whenever I tried to speak these unnatural words, they come out poorly. As a teenager, Mamu-G and I had broken, inaccurate conversations between us which consisted of pathetic attempts to speak each other's language. Only a few familiar words would crumble the thick wall that divided us. Whenever I visited him I would murmur a dainty, "As-Salaam-Alaikum" with a fragile "Hello" as his only reply, and then, swiftly walk away before my shame from the inability to understand affected me further. Despite this, I was oblivious to many |

African Racism - See How it Covers Over BlackAccording to the World Health Organization, nearly 77% of Nigerian women use skin-lightening products regularly (Abuja). Following this shocking statistic, recent findings of the Associated Press poll of racial attitudes in America concluded that 43% of blacks are anti-black (Ross). The reluctance to accept one's self amongst those of African descent is corresponded with the bias of white supremacy, which was initiated through the emergence of capitalism and the African slave trade in the 1500s. Discrimination against blacks remained established even after segregation was outlawed in 1954. An advertisement for Elliott's White Veneer Paint in 1935 provides a clear manifestation of the conspicuous, unabashed racism that took place during this time through an illustration of two boys, both of literal black skin tone. Both boys are drawn with wide grins as one boy, using Elliott's White Veneer Paint, paints the other white. In addition, an inscription that reads "See How it Covers Over Black," decorates the top of the page. This advertisement, purposed for persuasive means of marketing, delivers a blatant promotion of white supremacy and a transparent reflection of t |

Mexico City and the Crisis of UrbanizationLast week I went to Mexico and surveyed families living in various places in Mexico City. It is one of the worlds largest cities in population. It sits in a high basin surrounded by mountains around 7,000 feet above sea level and is called the Valley of Mexico. In 1325 the Aztecs founded a city called Tenochtitlan. In 1521, Spain conquered the Aztec Empire and destroyed it. Finally in 1821, Mexico won its independence from Spain and Mexico City became the capital of the new country. However, I also found out that there were several problems, so I wanted to figure out where these originated from. Rural decline in the country sides causes urban migration. Only 15 percent of the land in Mexico is suitable for farming and most of the best la |

Extended Minimum Wage in SingaporeRecently on January 8 2014, Singapore's government announced all cleaners will receive an entry-level wage of S$1,000 a month. To do this, the government will require all cleaning businesses to be licensed, and one of the requirements for the license will be that all the cleaners are paid a minimum wage of S$1,000 a month. A similar requirement for standard starting pay and progressive wage model is being worked out for the security industry as well. Mandatory the minimum wage for unskilled workers, such as cleaners and securities, is a good first step to workers' welfare. First reason is that it will guarantee a minimum standard of living for unskilled workers. Guaranteeing a minimum standard of living is the main purpose of the minimum wage in the first place. Most of the resident working as cleaners in Singapore is older workers. Without a minimum wage, these workers may be forced to work for less money. Second, it will raise the incentive to work among the lower-skilled. For example, a 50-year-old worker may not want to work for $800 a month or about $622 in cash after factoring in CPF contributions ($118) and a |

Legalizing Marijuana - Benefits and ProblemsRecently, it was reported that many Chinese entertainment stars were arrested for marijuana, including Kai Ko and Jaycee Chan. Indeed, smoking marijuana can bring a short pleasure and fantasy feelings, but we cannot ignore the fact that weeding out has numerous problems. The question is whether we can manage marijuana as similar as alcohol products for recreational purposes. From my perspective, the benefits and problems of using marijuana are the major factors when referring to the legalization of it. The Benefits of Legalizing Marijuana First, marijuana is a kind of psychotropic substance, which will have a profound impact on people's nervous systems, including getting high, creating a feeling of euphoria, or having stomach ache effects. It seems that weeding out can release them from stress and reduce social pressure. If a person uses marijuana in a proper way, it may decrease his anxiety and improve mood. Meanwhile, it can also enhance the brain excitability and increase creative ability, so people can make quick responses and come up with more new ideas. It is also said that marijuana can help eliminate nightmares. That is wh |

The Woodspurge by Daniel Gabriel RossettiIn this poem, The Woodspurge, Rossetti expresses his grief throughout the poem. It is believed that this poem is written when he was in his anguished state when he was being pressurized by Elizabeth Siddal's desire for marriage. Siddal is the main and usual model Rossetti had used for most of his paintings. They got married eventually though. Nothing about her is mentioned in this poem but we could clearly sense and feel his grief and depression throughout the poem. Rossetti starts off the poem with an antithesis, "The wind flapped loose, the wind was still." This might be used to show how even the weather seemed to be in depression and in unstable state. The wind is howling at one time and it freezes at the other, this shows how volatile and unstable the weather is and Rossetti can relate with it easily. He is very stressed and depressed at that time, he is not in the right state of mind and the wind's volatility makes him feel as though it feels the s |

Political Hardships of World War IIMany short term benefits are accompanied with the hardships of war; however, the long-term consequences outweigh them by a landslide. Gandhi once commented, "I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary, the evil it does is permanent." The quote describes how even though violence appears to be a viable solution, the benefits are only temporary and will only promote further mayhem. World War I was an international war centered in Europe that began on July 28, 1914 and ended on November 11, 1918. The war was fought between two rival alliances: the Allies (France, United Kingdom, Russian empire) against the Central Powers (Germany and Austria-Hungary). The war was stretched to four years and ended in 1918 when countries of the Central Powers signed armistice agreements. The novel All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque describes the experiences of German soldier Paul Baumer and his comrades during the war. The novel illustrat |

Love - Indefinitely ComplicatedLove is a feeling that is almost inexpressible. Some, if not all, might ask "Why is love so complicated?" All I have to say about that is...because we make it so. Humans are a complicated species.Love has the ability to change the world and make any individual happy regardless of their background. Love might have its cons, but overall love is one of the best feelings a person can experience. Marriage is the way to make love eternal and in turn create a life of happiness. Unfortunately, being single only leads to loneliness and regret. Personally, I would pick marriage over being single 10 times out of 10. Being married triumphs over singleness, because love is an amazing feeling. A spouse will never be lonely and a spouse will always have their partner's back. Although I agree with Bacon's statements in "Of Marriage and Single Life", that married life requires and abundance of time and responsibility, it's important to extend his ideas since love can make one's life exponenti |

Just One More YesterdayIt is amazing how many things we take for granted. We make plans for the day, and don't think twice about how those plans can be taken away in the blink of an eye. I never thought as much about it myself, until I faced with the shock, and undeniable truth of my grandfathers death. I don't think anyone really thinks about tragedy until they are actually faced with shocking news. Of course at the time I was only 10 years old and the word death has never even crossed my mind even once. I remember I never really liked or even wanted to spend anytime with my grandfather, all he did was scold and punish me. However, I realize I will never be the same because after learning about his life, I regret not even getting to know him before his unfortunate death, just 5 minutes would've been enough. Just thinking back all I could ever remember of my grandfather was that he never showed any emotion; never said he loved anyone, never said whether or not he was having a good time, he showed no emotion |

Culper Spy Ring - Revolutionary WarIn any military organization, it benefits to know what the enemy is planning and to keep the enemy from knowing what you are planning. General George Washington understood this concept very well, and exercised every strategy and tactic to achieve both tasks. The Culper Spy Ring was an American Spy Network used to process secret British information and to supply it to General Washington during the peak of the American War for Independence. In November 1778, General Washington selected Major Benjamin Tallmadge as director of military intelligence; his duty was to create a secret spy ring to capture British information. Major Tallmadge settled his group of spies in the busy city of New York City. The information collected and delivered on through the spy ring from 1778 to the wars end in 1783 consisted of key British movements, fortifications, and plans in New York and the surrounding region that helped the patriot's defeat the British in the American Revolutionary War. The Civil War - America's North and SouthA nation born from the chains of British control, America faced a continuing problem; to preserve and develop a strong united nation. The country was divided in many aspects of life during the early to mid-1800s (pre-civil war era). The struggle for the equality between races, especially blacks and whites with the removal of slavery, or the difficult attack on society by women to achieve equal ranks as men. These conflictions within the American society led to a dis-unified States instead of becoming a truly United States like the founding fathers hoped and believed for. These conflicts were only the beginning to the creation of a dis-unified nation, as an even greater problem loomed over the country. Sectionalism. As the nation was split between the North and the South, the tensions of sectionalism continued to grow. It overpowered the forces of unity within the nation, and it created a problem within the United States that could not be overlooked. A war was looming. Not a war with a |

Rising Racism after 9-11What is a Middle Easterner? What is a Middle Easterner American? Are these ethnicities subject to negative treatment by others? Why is it vital to perceive these distinctions in the treatment of Middle Easterner Americans and, specifically, in the domain of the working environment and in training? The examination we did find shows that it prompts poor scholarly execution and fulfilling toward oneself predictions. Concerning working environment segregation, and especially its impact on income, we discovered an abatement in profit for Bedouin men and those apparent to be Middle Easterner. This real reduction in wages was brief, then again, and appeared to be a prompt response to national political occasions. Numerous variables help the abuse of Bedouins in the United States, yet specific occasions have happened in America that expanded and maddened these emotions in a lot of people. Adolf Eichmann - Nazi BureaucratAdolf Eichmann was captured on May 11th, 1960 and was taken to court on April 11th, 1961. His trial was of extreme degree and intense examinations. On May 31st, 1962, Adolf Eichmann received the death penalty and was hanged. Before all of that, Eichmann's profession was that of being a Nazi bureaucrat. He was in charge of arranging the mass deportations, of the Jewish people, to the killing centers. Eichmann was a very unsuccessful student and had been fired from his last job as a travel salesman. When he first joined the Nazi's he did not know their true motives. However later on they became very clear; and yet Eichmann still remained true them. After losing his job as a salesman he was known as a failure to his family, friends, social class, and most importantly in his own eyes. With joining the Nazi's he figured that he could reinvent himself in the bureaucracy and make a better career for himself. Adolf remained with this job for thirteen years and rose up to Obersturmbannfuhrer wh |

Surviving a Zombie AttackWhile sitting in the recliner in your living room, you hear a loud shriek coming from outside the house. You look out of the window and see a group of disgusting, blood covered zombies chowing down on a young woman. You also see a stroller about five feet from the mob of zombies. After the woman is eaten to just being bones lying on the sidewalk, the zombies move on to the stroller. One of the zombies looks up from the stroller and notices you in the window. After finishing the baby, the zombies start running toward you. What do you do now? The most important things during a zombie attack, to me, would be finding the perfect shelter, having good transportation, getting a good weapon, and having the right tools. What to use for these items is the question. During the zombie attack I would go to a Bass Pro/Cabelas store to take shelter. Bass Pro and Cabelas are connected so you get double the supplies that you would need. This store has many places you could run to, so that you could ta |

Expository Essay - Fetal Alcohol SyndromeA learning disability can be classified as a neurological disorder in which the person's brain is wired differently. Children who have learning disabilities are often just as smart as or even smarter than their classmates; they simply have difficulties reading, writing, spelling, and organizing information. These disabilities cannot be fixed and are often a lifetime battle. However with support, these people can be successful in school as well as later on in life with a career. A birth defect is a structural or functional abnormality present at birth that can cause physical or mental disabilities. They may be caused by genetics or even the environment. Beowulf - A True Heroic FigureIn our culture, the heroic code is usually seen in a person who has accomplished great deeds; for instance, Abraham Lincoln and George Washington led our nation through times of crisis and transitions. During the Anglo-Saxon period, the heroic code showed strength, bravery, high praise to the greater authority and to overcome evil. In Beowulf, the author uses Hrothgar speeches to the Danes to show that he embodies the heroic code. Hrothgar shows his first trait embodying the heroic code by accepting Beowulf's help. In the beginning of the epic, Beowulf comes to Hrothgar to see if he needed help. The author gives us evidence by stating "Beowulf, you've come to us in friendship and I accept your help"" (p.37). Although one might be a leader, nothing is wrong with accepting help takes courage. Beowulf feels loyal toward Hrothgar. T |

History of Muslim CitiesIn 600 CE, a dynamic and living religious society was brought to existence. After Muhammad's death, the Islamic caliphate built dar al-Islam the Muslim community from conquests made by the Arabs. Muslim cities were sprouting throughout the Mediterranean region, and trade extended into Asia. During the Post-Classical era, Islamic civilizations made noteworthy impacts in the Muslim society, undertaking military expansions that stretched its political and cultural influences through trade and missionaries. One city after another, the huge Islamic realm was coming together. From the very beginning, Islamic society prospered primarily from commerce and manufacturing. During the Abbasid caliphate, intricate trading networks linked and unified all regions of the Islamic world, creating a hemispheric trading zone as seen in Document 8. Scholar Abd al-Rahman once stated there were skilled workmen in Nishapur and Merv, and that Samarkand was the destination of merchants (Doc. 7). Nishapur, Merv, |

America and Opposition to SlaveryMany factors affected the opposition to slavery in the United States. Growing opposition to slavery was impacted by the American Revolution, the growing body of information on real life slave experiences, the second great awakening, and the idea of Manifest Destiny. The American Revolution in 1776 greatly impacted people's opinions on slavery. Because of the revolution we have the Declaration of Independence, which states that all men are created equal. Although all men were now supposed to be equal, they were not. Slavery caused people not to be equal. In Document B, it points out that they did not treat slaves as equal but as property. They were treated as something to be sold and tossed around like a material item. The government states that all men are born free and people believed they should follow through with that claim. The Declaration of Independence stirred people up because how the government acted and what they said did not go together. Document A shows the |

Premature Ejactulation - Causes and PreventionPremature ejaculation is considered the most common sexual dysfunction in men. Using this strict definition, premature ejaculation is when a man has an orgasm sooner during intercourse than his partner wishes. This dysfunction is common to effect 30 million men in the United States. In his frequently referenced article from the February 10, 1999 Journal of the American Medical Association, Edward Laumann demonstrated that when compared to erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation effects two to three times as many men. "It is also interesting to note that the article showed that a similar number of men were bothered by premature ejaculation irrespective of race, educational background, marital status or age. If one expands the definition of premature ejaculation to include any couple where the female partner takes longer to reach orgasm than the male, estimates are that up to 90 million couples are affected by premature ejaculation" "(Premature Ejaculation, 2014). Fahrenheit 451 - Clarisse and MildredFahrenheit 451, written by Ray Bradbury, takes place in a futuristic world where technology sets precedence over nature, books, and the mental and emotional states of humans in society. Bradbury created two main characters that would influence the plot as well as the protagonist of the novel in many different ways. Both female characters are a looking glass of what society is and is not at the time. One of the two main female characters is Mildred Montag who is a conformist of society and has an ongoing struggle with her mental and emotional self, husband, and addiction to sleeping pills. Clarisse McCellan is the another main female character but is a non- conformist of society and has a passion for discovering what nature has to offer and has the ability to think for herself, something that others in society are unable to do. Though both females are responsible for the mental and emotional change in the main character, which makes them significant, their conformist and non-conformis |

The Mayan and Human SacrificeAlmost everything a man does is based on his beliefs and what he chooses to believe in. Religion is the primary foundation of ones beliefs. Luckily, today our religious beliefs are not as violent as they were between 300 and 900 C.E . The Mayans are a Mesoamerican civilization who inhabited in the Yucatán Peninsula states of Quintana Roo, Campeche and Yucatán and southern Mexican states of Chiapas and Tabasco during this time period. Their civilization is identified with highly advanced people, politically, economically, socially and intellectually. An example of this was their creation of almost a perfect calendar without the use of a leap year and the introduction of agriculture. Although the Mayans were first seen as peaceful, hieroglyphics carved into stone, pottery and bone proved otherwise. It was through Maya's advanced writing system of scripts, we see that bloodletting and scarification played a big roll in their religion. Their religion was distinguished by the |

Anglo-Saxon Traits of BeowulfBeowulf is often referred to as the first important work of literature in English, even though it was written in Old English, an ancient form of the language that slowly evolved into the English now spoken. Beowulf is a hero who embodies the ideal characteristics in the Anglo-Saxon culture; these characteristics all come together to make up an epic tale. He possesses the virtues, traits and beliefs that were respected in the Anglo-Saxon culture. Beowulf displays these virtues in his own actions during different circumstances throughout the tale. Beowulf was "the strongest of the Geats" and also "greater and stronger than anyone anywhere in this world." Beowulf is shown to be the strongest among the strong. Physical strength was very much envied by the Anglo-saxon culture. Beowulf could slay the greatest monster of all, Grendell. Beowulf killed Grendel; Grendel had never come to such a match among a stronger person "That shepherd of evil, guardian of crime knew at once that nowhe |

The Jacksonian DemocratsDuring the 1820's and 1830s, Jacksonian Democrats viewed themselves as the guardians of the Constitution. These strict constructionists, easily comparable to Thomas Jefferson's early Republican party, influenced an increase in the people's participation in the national government and the amount of voters dramatically increased. In the 1810's some states, starting with Maryland, began to expand white male suffrage and loosening up on their strict voting requirements. Although, all of these voting changes applied to only a minority of the American population. The male White Anglo-Saxon Protestants (Wasp) were the only ones who could vote, and subsequently dominating politics. The vast amount of blacks, immigrants and women were not privileged with the opportunity of liberty that the wasps did. This lopsided political influence translated to economics; the wasps, who had the most power, were also the richest; creating a large disparity in wealth between the Wasps and common man. These dis |
