My Papa's Waltz - Perception and RealityYou never expect a child that has grown up in poverty of single parent household to have the same perception of life of a rich kid who grew up on Beverly Hills. We shouldn't assume the same while we are reading poems. Theodore Roethke "My Papa's Waltz" can be used as an example of this theory. Depending on how you grew up all has an effect of how you view this poem. The poem "My Papa's Waltz" has a double meaning it is either a waltz between a father and son, thus bringing them closer together, or on the darker side it is a fight between a drunken father and his son where the intimacy of the dance is overshadowed by the anger the reader feels from his her past. In this poem Theodore Roethke finagles our emotions with his literary conventions. Someone who has been through a struggle in their life tends to follow the negative connotation of this poem which depicts an abusive drunken father. According to kidshealth.org kids in abusive relationships teens tend to focu |

The Meaning Behind Waiting for GodotTo quote the British critic Kenneth Tynan, "Beckett's Waiting for Godot is a dramatic vacuum...It has no plot, no climax, no denouement; no beginning, no middle, and no end." Through his play, Samuel Beckett takes us on a literary journey of extremely thought-provoking nature. His style of writing is thoroughly cryptic and open to an infinite number of interpretations and misinterpretations. Drawing heavily from religious themes and the Bible, the book is in some ways a repetitive rant on existentialism. Beckett never gave an interpretation of his own for the play and left it to his readers to unravel. The play is based on how two characters Vladimir and Estragon wait for a mutual friend of theirs named Godot whom strangely both of them have never seen but hold in awe and respect. In their wait, they meet Pozzo and his slave Lucky and also a messenger boy who claims he comes from Godot who in the end does not even turn up. Yet Vladimir and Estragon remain there waiting for him as if th |

Moral Limits and Individual ConductChapter 13 of Thomas Hobbes "Leviathan"" begins with Hobbes comparing man's characteristics. He says that humans are characteristically different, in that one can be stronger or have a quicker mind, but when it comes down to it, a man can over power or outwit any man. He goes on to say that everyman is proud and conceited in their abilities to be better then another man that they believe they can over power or out wit a person if they are threatened. And if two men desire the same want and one man feels susceptible to not being able attain his wants, he recognizes that the other man is his enemy and will seek to subdue and/or destroy the other. Hobbes continues saying that if one man is the victor, and he fears no single man, the loser will unite like-minded forces in order to dethrone the conqueror. This creates a social unrest for every man for fear of losing what he has. Thus, man will continue to fight until he no longer feels threatened by any man or group of men. And if a man is |

Errors and Uncertainties in Experimental MeasurementsExperimentation is an important process carried out on new theories, ideas, products and devices to validate them. Despite the quality of the experiment there will always be some uncertainties associated with the experimental data. This experiment discusses the uncertainties associated with the Young's modulus determined from a simple cantilever beam experiment, in which the deflection of the beam due to the applied load is recorded with both a dial gauge and a potentiometer. With the most suitable measurements of beam deflection the average value of Young's modulus and the uncertainties associated with that is calculated. The results were in accordance with the theoretical predictions. The experiment revealed that by statistical analysis of the dataset and by repeating the experiments the random errors could be minimized. Experimentation is the most important process in engineering and science. Any ideas, theories, products and devices are validated only by experimentation. Despite t |

Exploration of the TruthTo be truthful is to be human To thine own self be true And it must follow, as the night the day Thou const not then are false to any man Polonius, Act I Scene III, Hamlet by Shakespeare Truth is not a definition, a rule or Gods will. Its a form of life. A person can be taught what truth is but no one can make him choose to be true. Understanding truth is not overrated; it is just not fit for words or even expressions. The law of Truth merely means that we must speak the Truth. Evolutionary psychologists see human nature as a collection of psychological adoptions that often operate under the surface. So the world doesnt changes innocence into lies. The very human nature is that of liars. Even an infant barely in the world cries for attention. Humans are mimics and so ultimately its the world that can change lies into truth or vice versa. But does that means it is absolute. .. All the symbols are interchangeable, for each one containeth in itself its own opposite. and there could be |

Technology's Impact on SocietyThere is a vigorous argument among people as to what roles technology plays in today's society. There is no doubt that technology has pervasively influenced on our day-to-day life. As a result, society is changing at a speed that is highly unprecedented. Today's society is in a state of digital frenzy. Fields related to energy, biology, construction, medicine and even some eco-environments are utilizing technology to design, accelerate and create. Due to recent improvements in technology, the overall quality of life in most societies has never been better than it is now. Even though most people can admit that they are unable to live without technology, some of us still wonder about how this technology influences our lives and society as a whole. In this essay, I will provide and analysis of the argument and a synthesis of the work put forth by Jay David Bolter, Richard Grusin, Cynthia L. Selfe, McKenzie Wark, and Jane McGonigal. These authors place an emphasis on technology's influe |

The Second Amendment - Bearing ArmsThe second amendment about right to bear arms is outdated and needs to change. Just over this Thanksgiving during Black Friday shopping, in Las Vegas, a thief shot a shopper in his leg and stole his television. As shooting incidents rapidly increase in America, people dying from shooting is something that is really common in the US. Every year in the United States 100,000 people are shot and out of those 100,000 people, 31,668 die. When the second amendment was made in 1791, its purpose was to serve individual protection. However, as years passed by this amendment failed to serve its purpose. In the US Constitution, it clearly states that the second amendment was to serve individual protection yet people use firearms to wound each other. Two hundred years ago, firear |

Importance of the English LanguageThe English language is the most dominant language spoken on earth today. It is used in politics when great countries decide their future in trade or war, but also when we order food on vacation. It is a language made for everyone and for every occasion. The power of mastering a language is, in my opinion, often understated, and the power of global understanding is crucial for our future global wellbeing. I know that it is highly rewarded both in search of a job and socially, and in Sweden we do not have as big of a problem with valuing the art that is language. But many countries do. They do not put as much resources into education, which causes a gap between school kids across the world. In a world that, as for the look of it, is going on a downhill path rapidly, I believe talking, debating and diplomacy is the way towards a glob |

Wal-Mart and the Feed My People ProgramSummary In the small town of High Ridge, Missouri, the local Wal-Mart does not donate their damaged goods, as other franchises do. Wal-Mart has a strict policy. It states that they may "never sell a broken sealed item on the shelf no matter the expiration date"" (Daniel Webb). The cans can never be sold if it is bent, because when a can is bent it breaks the interior seal that hold the preservation of the food. What that means is that it keeps the food fresh longer. This is very important because "once the seal is broken, there is a much shorter time limit on when the food will spoi" " ( DeGuire). Rather than being good for years, the canned goods last a week to a few months. If a canned good is damaged, it should be determined if it is still edible or not. Determining if the can good is still "good " or not depends on the general manager of the store. They are the one that chooses the strict rules to follow for their particular store. For example, the Fenton Wal-Mart donates their c |

Culture and Diversity in AmericaThe acceptance and acknowledgement of cultural diversity is one among many reasons why the United States of America is not only popular as a tourist destination but successful in both business and trade. Because of the diverse cultures, many people in the US have learned more about the outside world without having to travel to other countries. The US is a melting pot of cultures. Divers cultures are not only about one's home background but include the differences such as religious belief, traditions or even physical looks. In a community with a diver's culture, opinions and decisions are made after analyzing and understanding others peoples point of views. This helps bring the people in a community much closer to each other. In an educational environment, student get to learn firsthand the cultures of their fellow colleague which gives them the opportunity to grow outside their usual environment, therefore preparing them to be able to meet and tackle the challenges of an ever changing working env |

The Parachute ExperimentIn this experiment we decided to test the terminal velocity of a parachute carrying a parcel of sand. We used a plastic bag to simulate a parachute which would carry the bag of sand. We would tie rope to the parachute which was unified to 1 meter, this was one of the controlled variables we had to create for a fair experiment. The size of the parachute was also unified as we only used one parachute, which is another controlled variable. Another controlled variable which we had to enforce was the the height in which we would have to drop the parachute and when we would start to time the parachutes decent, we decided the best course of action would be to drop the parachute from the fourth floor, which was 46 meters from the ground floor, and time from the third floor to ensure the initial acceleration face had stopped. We had to create an independent variable in order to repeat the experiment with multiple results, we decided to change the mass of the sand, we started with 100 grams of |

Film Overview - The Breakfast ClubIn order for a film to be considered a classic, it needs an original idea, a relatable plot, and the ability to withstand the test of time. The Breakfast Club, directed by John Hughes, is a landmark classic film of the century. It has a concept that is something that hadn't been done before, it is relatable for all viewers, and it is still considered a must-watch film today. Since classic literature is constantly analyzed through critical lenses, classic films should be too. The Breakfast Club is a film that can be very well analyzed through both the cultural and the feminist critical lenses. The Breakfast Club is relatable for people of all ages, but predominantly is pertinent to the teenage age group. This is because this movie speaks of many of the cultural issues faced during the teenage years. The students in the film speak of family problems, social issues, and show examples of both things that have remained culturally similar and things that have drastically changed in social |

The Child Protagonist Point of ViewChildren place their trust and beliefs in those around them. Children grow up influenced by their family and close friends. Their inspiration often comes from religious beliefs and perspectives come from the people they love. In "Salvation"" by Langston Hughes and "The Button,"" by Mahdokht Kashkuli, child protagonists are the speaking voice of children and the many negative emotional impacts an adult's decisions and influences can have in their life; children believe the adults in their life and expect nurturing, honesty, guidance, and a sense of safety. They do not anticipate guilt, heartbreak, disappointment, pain, and scars. In this essay I will analyze how authors use child protagonists in first-person point of view to support their thematic goals of disappointment, betrayal, and loss of faith versus what children expect in adults they trust and have emotionally close relationships. In "Salvation"" by Langston Hughes, Langston himself writes an autobiographical short story in f |

Challenges of Standardized TestingAlbert Einstein once said, "Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid." This quote is a representation of standardized testing, many students struggle with these tests because they are long, timed, and do not necessarily test over what they have been prepared for. This paper is an analysis of standardized tests; it reveals many challenges towards students, teachers, and schools. These challenges include stress on students to score high on the test to get into a good college, stress on teachers to teach students what is on the test, and stress on the school to keep state and federal funding based on the students scores. Each year the ACT, American College Testing, has 1,666,017 students take the test and 1,664,479 students took the SAT, Scholastic Aptitude Test, since the ACTs inception in 2011. The original record of standardized testing comes from China, to get a government job the candidates |

Maintaining a Good Nutrition PlanPeople all over the world are careless about nutrition facts. They buy food without noticing the nutrition labels or the ingredients that aren't healthy for them. Indeed, not all kinds of food are good for the human body. At the same time, in order for person to be healthy, they need specific workouts and to eat conscientiously. Ultimately, what you eat affects your body in a good or bad way. The human body gets the energy it needs through food by a process called metabolism. In fact, there are two kinds of metabolism, lower and higher. For example, a person with a higher metabolism burns calories faster. This can be very helpful to maintaining a healthy weight. On the other hand, people with lower metabolisms usually gain weight in an easier. Also, people's' metabolisms can be defined by the food they eat. If they eat healthy foods, then they are more likely to have a faster metabolism. |

Legacy's of Polk, Lincoln and ReaganWhen Texas broke away from Mexico in 1836, the majority of Mexicans believed it was still a part of Mexico. The government of the United States believed differently. As his time in office was coming to an end, President John Tyler received enough support to annex Texas. This was in no small part due to the Manifest Destiny. At this time, Americans were constantly looking for land to start farms or sell to incoming farmers. They found the most easily accessible and available land in Texas. There was also the ideal that the Southerners traveled into Texas in order to get another slave state into the Union. When the annexation occurred, Mexico broke relations and withdrew its minster from Washington. President James K. Polk believed that he had to restore diplomatic relations, so he sent a special temporary envoy to Mexico. The Mexicans expected that envoy John Slidell would make an offer for Texas, after which Mexico would receive him or someone else as permanent minister. Instead Polk |

Cultural Changes in Ancient EgyptCulture is essentially the foundation of who we are in life. It has defined our lifestyle, beliefs, values, and practices ever since the very first human civilization. One of the oldest civilizations is the Egyptian and has a culture that is as deep and rich as the Nile, which runs through it. This well developed and distinctive society has been centered on literature, religion, science, and architecture for over 120,000 years and has changed drastically in every aspect since the start to now. The Egyptian civilization entails a long and intricate history of cultural, political, economical and social changes. In order to understand the Cultural Revolution, the history of Egypt is very important. The Egyptian civilization is situated in the Nile Valley, in the northeast corner of current day Africa. The civilization was and currently is centered along the Nile River that acts as lifeblood for Egypt. The river sets a rhythm of a way of life that would not make Egypt what it has become |

My Grandmother: My Best FriendImagine losing your best friend. That special someone that you go to for everything, and the one person who can make you smile when all you want to do is cry. For me that person was my grandma, and she was taken from me all to quickly. I remember that day like it was yesterday. When I awoke that morning, I remember hearing her getting ready to leave the house. I thought "Ughhh, I'm so tired. I'm way too lazy to get up and say goodbye, I will just see her when she gets home." " And from there it all went down hill. Later that day I was in the kitchen making lunch for me and my sister, when my grandpa got the heart wrenching call from the clinic. They informed him that they had found my grandma unconscious in her wheelchair when they came to get her for her doctors appointment. He was told said she went into a cardiac arrest, and that they were taking her to the hospital that moment in an ambulance. My grandpa immediately called my mom rambling, "Deanna, I just got a call from the cli |

Harry Frankfurt and the Concept of WillHarry Frankfurt came up with the idea that the "essence of man lies in will" and how it is important for a person to have second-order volitions. The will is the prime connection between a man's actions and his desires, but reason also plays a role as a tool in sorting through those desires. According to Hume, reason can be an influence, but it can never influence any action of the will. Even though rational thinking through desires could be a faculty that a person could use, the will is the ultimate decider in a person's actions and is truly the basic component of man. In Freedom of the Will and the Concept of a Person, Frankfurt argues that the essence of a person lies in the particular structure of man called will. This will is the main motivator for one's actions and is constituted by the first-order desires and second-order desires. The first order desires are just basic cravings for an object or an idea-these are desires that even animals possess. What sets apar |

ADHD - Recognition and TreatmentA child sits and stares out the door, wondering what topic he should write about. A few minutes later the child shuts down and rests his head on the desk, still not having any idea on what to write about. Soon after that he bounces out of his chair wondering what his peers are doing. Going from person to person, he distracts the other children from completing their task. He is asked to go sit back down and start writing. Moments later he sits and taps his feet, louder and louder with each tap. During this period of time he forgets what he was assigned to do. The Wife of Bath - Literary EssayGeoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales' purpose is to present the entire spectrum of human personality by showing their qualities, flaws, oddities & hypocrisies. Through the Wife of Bath, in both her prologue & her tale, Chaucer introduces the modern-day notion that women are entitled to remarry & fulfill their intimate desires & to demand that their wants & unique wisdom be respected by men. Chaucer introduces the concept that women are entitled to marry again & fulfill their personal requests. The Wife claims that women "should not be married more than once" (Prologue ln 13). Widows, during that time, should not remarry but instead become a nun or spend the rest of her life in celibacy. She has had five husbands, & since Jesus only visited one wedding, people criticized her & said that she should have only married once. Instead of feeling shameful about her intense sex drive, the Wife simply argued that God told them "to increase and multiply" (Prologue ln. 28). She sees sex as a fun & healthy activity to participate in. She does not feel shamed by her actions but sees herself as simply upholding God's orders. The Wife claims that God endorses her sexua |

Strict and Loose Constructionism in AmericaAs the United States of America changed and became more powerful, so did the interpretation of the Constitution change and develop various strong beliefs. The Jeffersonian Republicans and the Federalists were two groups that both proposed somewhat contradictory views on this topic, but as times changed, their actions showed that their views changed with it. Although their ideas did not completely change, the actions that each side took seemed to be contradictory to their beliefs, showing that they had not remained completely true to the titles that they had. Jeffersonian Republicans were generally characterized as "strict" constructionists because of their exact and technical interpretation of the Constitution before the election of 1800. They showed such an interpretation through the actions that they supported or opposed. A primary example of this is Jefferson's opposition to the national bank. He believed that it was wrong because the Constitution gave this power to the st |

Why Buddhism is the Best PhilosphyBuddhism is a religion that was started in India by Siddartha Gautama known as Buddha. Buddha means "enlightened one"." He grew up to a rich Hindu family. Despite being rich, his goal as a person was to be happy and he believed that material wealth was not the ultimate goal of life. During his time, the caste system was the main way that social classes were divided in India. He wanted to change that. He did not think that people should be judged on how much money or materials that they have. Buddhism is equally open to all and there is nothing in Buddhism that includes judging others based on what they have. Later in his life Siddartha Gautama became an ascetic. He only fulfilled his basic needs like eating, drinking, shelter and wearing clothing. He did this because it was his way of proving that in order to live happily and not suffer all you need is food and water (Gethin, 1998, 88). Buddhism spread from India to Tibet, China and Korea. Impact of Control on Business ManagementThe four basic functions of management are planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. Planning is the setting of objectives and figuring out how to achieve those objectives. Organizing is the development of an organizational structure and allocation of personnel to ensure the accomplishment of objectives. Leading involves influencing others to accomplish the objectives. Control ensures performance does not deviate from standards. I will be discussing how control is affected by the three previous functions. I will also be writing about control by itself. Part of the planning phase consists of establishing objectives/goals. The planners must also make decisions about the best course of action for achieving those objectives. Without a goal i |
