My Aspiration: A Doctor in Bangladesh

Every man has some aspirations in their lives which they dream to achieve or fulfill. Some strive to become rich and famous. Some dream to become leaders, politicians, and social reformers. There are others who rage to become authors, poets and novelists while most of us generally have a desire to become engineers, teachers and police officers to make a positive change in this world. There are quite a few people whom I have stumbled upon to have no fixed aim or goal and are perfectly satisfied to go with the flow by nature. In my case, I have always had a certain longing to help people and try to make their lives as easier as I can in order for them to lead a joyous lifestyle. The sole object of my being is to lead a life of truthfulness and sim

The People's Republic of China

The People's Republic of China has been a communist state since 1949, when Mao Zedong declared, after a bloody civil war, that all of China was to be combined under one banner, and that banner was Communism. For many years, China remained where it was, focusing more on its internal problems and economic reform within its own country; therefore, China was not worrying about what was going on in the rest of the world. However, in the 1990's after the Berlin Wall fell and Russia became a Federation with its first President in 1991, China began to look towards the rest of the world. Under the leadership of President Jiang Zemin and Premier Zhu Rongji, China's economic growth rate rose to almost 12% and helped to bring over 150 million people out of poverty ("China "). In 2001, China joined the World Trade Organization and has since then maintained a steady growth in both economic and quality of life for the Chinese people.  In recent years (2012-2013), China refocused and has tried to

Male Students and Bullying

Abstract This paper describes key parts of the discussion that has been going on among researchers and others over the course of the last decade about what bullying is, its influence, what may be causing it, and what are its consequences among male, high school teenagers. Bullying encompasses many aspects of adolescence and is a microcosm of the social architecture of the human experience of adulthood in worldwide communities. The influence and causes of bullying are complex, mirroring its broad definition; and its social, psychological, physical and economic consequences while generally suspected and partially studied have been largely unreported and remain unknown. Bullying is a fact of life these days among male adolescents. It is so prevalent everywhere that it may be called a rite of passage. Unofficial estimates made by researchers studying the phenomenon in many different countries and venues (traditional and cyberbullying) all over the world range from 5-43% adolescent invol

Analysis - Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

From my point of view, one of the good things that I find in this novel is the emotional connections to the character. For instance, love plays a crucial role and it appears from the beginning of the novel by explaining that Harry's ability to survive Voldemort's killing curse is a direct result of his mother's love. So, the readers can notice the enormous power that love has and how important it can be in everyone's life. Also, the importance of friendship is shown in this novel, Harry is able to rely on his close friends when he has to overcome new life challenges and difficult tasks. Furthermore, the novel shows to the readers that every character has their flaws and, of course, makes mistakes and every one of them has its own consequences. So, the characters learn to survive, just like in real life. After explaining these topics, in my opinion, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is a well-argued work and it can be related to significant education issues, including the

The Rights of Invasive Species

There are invaders in America. They are not aliens from another planet, or foreign spies from another country. They are invasive species. Although many of these invasive species are causing harm, the harm they are causing is due to them trying to survive. If a species is brought to a foreign land, it will do whatever it can to thrive in its environment. If that means it takes advantage of pre-existing native species, it will do that. Most of these species have been brought here by humans, they did not choose to invade us. Also, most of these invasive species are being killed. Sure, the death of one invasive species to save a whole population is reasonable. But, a bias has been formed around invasive species. People are judging a species' danger by its origin. That should not be happening, a species' danger should be determined by its impact on the environment, not where it is from, and invasive species should not be blamed for all of the destruction of the environment (Davis 153–

Putting an End to the California Drought

My family is something that I value greatly. They play a big part in my life and have taught me lots of values and lessons. I think nature is another big part of my life that I value. I think that we need to appreciate nature more and see more of it. Religion also plays a major role in my life; I would consider my belief in God to be my value center. I believe that God created the heavens and the earth and that all of nature is a gift of beauty from God. It is our job to be good stewards to nature. I think that we have to take care of nature and do the best we can to conserve and protect it. I believe that we need to leave this planet better than it was when we were born. I have spent a lot of time out in nature with my family, camping, hiking, and other activities. I have spent a lot of time out in nature, I love fishing and it makes me appreciate nature even more. I have been especially privileged to be able to go camping as much as I have. I have learned to always leave a spot better than you found it. My

The Bolsheviks and Provisional Government

Questions To what extent do you agree with the view that the collapse of the Provisional Government was due to the strength of the Bolsheviks? Response The Provisional Government was established by the Duma immediately following the February Revolution to function as a Russias governing body in March 1917. However, under its governance, Russia was plagued with ever-growing political instability and turmoils. The 25th October went down in history as the Bolsheviks successfully launched the virtually bloodless takeover of power into their hands, marking the complete collapse of the short-lived Provisional Government for only 8 months. Evidently, the most important factor bringing about this failure of Provisional Government went to the superior strength of Bolsheviks while other factors such as the institutional weaknesses and the mistakes of the Provisional Government also contributed significantly to this result. To begin with, by the time of October 1917, the Bolsheviks had been we

The Tyranny of Geography

The idea that human systems are constrained by geography and that environment therefore dictates human history can be useful in understanding early development of human systems. However, this idea limits the ability to examine the role that human ingenuity plays in human history and also becomes less relevant as human systems become more advanced. There are some very good examples of how geography has had long standing influence over the pace at which a cavitation will progress. One of the earliest examples during the Neolithic revolutions is the rise of agriculture in the Fertile Crescent. This area was uniquely suited for agriculture to thrive because of ideal climate and readily available sources of water. The area was also endowed with many native species of animals and plants that could be easily domesticated which made the change from a hunter gatherer society to an agricultural and pastoral society and easier transition. The rise of the Egyptian empire can also be partially credited to its geography. The Nile gave Egypt a reliable source of water even in times of drought, and th

The Foundation of Calculus

Calculus is the branch of mathematics that deals with the finding properties of derivatives and integrals of functions. To most, it is considered a living nightmare. Math alone as a subject is complicated, consisting with jumbles of twists and turns that lead to the answer of a problem that we have all sought in the past. Although the subject creates pain and suffering in all of us, it is considered a core knowledge that we all need to know. We live in a world that is plagued with numbers and systems of equations, from simple prices of the apples we buy, to the velocity of cars that we see everyday. It helps us better understand everything we see and feel in life. For many, Calculus is a subject that we are all forced to learn at some point in our life. We have all been forced to sit in a series of lecture halls or classrooms to learn the ways of Calculus. But why? It is because it is a form of Math, that's why. It's Math that exclusively focuses on the ways things change. It provides insight on the changes of many of functions that we may use to relate real wor

The Power of Parental Love

Have you ever heard the statement: "Trust, freedom, beauty. And above those things I believe in love?" Many people might think that those words refer to the love story. That is true. That statement came from a French movie where a bohemian writer falls in love with the most beautiful courtesan of the Moulin Rouge who is dying. I have seen this film just once in my life, and the story has been ingrained in my mind and heart-- and I am going to tell you why. Love is a feeling, a concept, and a value that every single person in the world can believe in. There are so many kinds of love, but the one that surpasses all others is parents' love.   Since I was born, my parents have been always there for me. They were my eyes when I could not see, my voice when I could not speak, and my feet when I could no

European Migration Trends

Introduction There are numbers definitions of migration, but in few words we can say that migration is 'moving to another area or country, especially in order to find work'. Free movement of persons is one of the fundamental right of European Union (EU). With no doubt it gives many benefits to European countries and citizens. In 2004 the Union introduced a law which regulates the right of every EU citizen and his family member to move and reside freely in any Member State. It says that, the only thing which a person needs to move or residence in other EU country for less than 3 months is an identity card or valid passport. To stay for longer than 3 months it is required to satisfy one of following condition: have a job, have enough earnings for livelihood and insurance, be a student or be a family member of a person who falls into one of the above categories. To get a right of permanent residence an union citizen should live in one place for at least 5 years. There are many reas

Feeding the World - Political and Financial

The present food situation in the world is demonstrating the growing demand for food globally. This food crisis is a consequence of causing an increasing gap between the rich and poor, developing and the developed countries. When the Cold War was over, Europe had less need for a large storage of food as war seemed less likely to happen. At the same time growing population of those living in less economically developed countries (LEDCs). These people are poorer and hungrier and consequently suffer serious health problems such as malnutrition and starvation. The global food prices rose in 2008 (http://faostat3.fao.org/). One of the products which had a large increase was rice which resulted in riots in Africa and Asia. Even people in more economically developed countries (MEDC's) spent a large part of their income on food and daily essentials. As a result, people either lower the quality of food, amount of food or spend more money trying to still afford the luxuries of high quality food

Overview of Ovarian Cancer

Epithelial ovarian cancer is the most common gynaecological cancer in the UK, with 6959 cases diagnosed in 2002. It accounts for 6% of all cancer deaths and has a five year survival rate of about 28% (Cancer research UK, 2005). This paper will focus on the diagnosis, and treatment of one 38 year old patient. Mrs A has been chosen as the course of her disease and the treatment she received has shown itself typical, however because of her comparatively young age, its personal effects are quite specific. Following an exploration into the physiology and risk factors of ovarian cancer, this paper will analyse current research and critically analyse the treatment Mrs A received. In 2004 Mrs A, a married lady with no children presented to her GP with abdominal discomfort and distension. A Computerised Tomography (CT scan) showed a large pelvic mass. A total abdominal hysterectomy, a bilateral salpingo oophorectomy and an omentectomy were then performed. Masses in both ovaries were found ex

Narrative Essay - Gaining Confidence

Growing up, I knew I wanted to shine amongst my fellow peers so I set goals and strove for what I thought could be possible. Having that mentality encourage me to become part of something big, Student Government Association. My high school at the time lack pride and school spirit, but I had an idea that could help bring back my school's lost fortune. I wanted to up the ante, show everyone that I had what it takes to make a true change. This influence my running for Student Government Association's Vice-President. I faced one problem running for the position, and it was the speech; the speech that would captivate the student body, the speech that would make or break me to become the Vice-President of my school. I wasn't the best writer. It was a challenging for me to put my all into a piece of writing. Usually I just bluff and make up a story that sounds legit to write; however, this was a different scenario. I have to come up with a speech that would make the student body believe that I had what it takes to make a change that other candidates couldn't. 3 days till

The Hand The Signed the Paper - Dylan Thomas

Published in 1936, the poem "˜The Hand That Signed the Paper," was written in 1933 by British poet Dylan Thomas. It was a time when the political and social attitudes led to Germany's rapid reorganization towards Nazism. Dylan Thomas had learned a lesson from the 37 million casualties in WWI (wikipedia). Instead of simply mourning the casualties in the war, Thomas notices that a society with stable economics and clear power separation does not start a war and predicted the coming World War II. Even though the exact starting reasons differed, economic factors are behind both World War I and II. It is not hard to see the economic collapse is Germany through Thomas' usage of metaphor and metonymy in the poem. Thomas metonymically links kings and fingers to nations at war; the titular hand is linked to the convention at Versailles of Britain, France, Italy, Japan and the United States (Randolph). With ample examples illustrating the cruelty of wars started by kings who did not recog

The Booming Sex Tourism Industry

Traveling is an experience that appeals to people for obvious reasons. There are thousands of reasons people engage in travel. Some people may travel simply for business, to experience a new culture, to enjoy new experiences, or even to find themselves as a person. People who catch the opportunity to travel are split into two separate groups: a traveler or a tourist. A traveler is known to enjoy culture, avoid stereotyping, and enjoy their time in a country. A tourist, on the other hand, may be likely to stereotype travel experiences, judge a culture, visit the highlights of a country, and engage in exotic experiences. Between the two, I want to focus on the tourist. Usually, a tourist is a person who travels for pleasure, and looks for quick ways to find pleasure in their limited time in a specific country. One of the fastest growing activities for tourists to take part in surrounds the idea of sex tourism. Sex tourism is defined as an activity that entails individuals engaging in bo

A Vision of Heaven

It was the perfect summer day; the sky was blue with strokes of clouds here and there, a light breeze so you don't sweat, and a roaring sun to fill the land, yet I was stuck at home watching TV. I thought to myself what am I doing with my life? So I grabbed my phone and texted anyone who I thought would be available to hang. I wait another 15 minutes, no one replies. I run to my room with a jolt, the floor creaks with every step I take. In one swift motion I opened the door and grabbed my backpack and shoved in my goggles and my towel. I had changed into my board shorts and tank top making sure I matched just in case anyone was looking my way. My dad always told me "simply smiling, styling, and profiling " which basically means when you go out make sure you look good. "Ma! I'm going out."" I screamed with hope she wouldn't care. "OK!"" she screamed back. As I rode down those cracked filled roads and parking lots, I closed my eyes let the sun's rays warm my face like a heated blanket o

The New War on Wolves

Wolves were driven to near extinction by man and need to be brought back. On December 8th 2011 J. William Gibson wrote an article in the opinion editorial section of the Los Angeles Times. Gibson wrote the article, "The New War on Wolves."" He comes from an educated background where he attended Yale and Cornell. Gibson has studied many environmental conflicts and recently he has started wring on a blog called Howling for Justice. He believes it is important that people save these wolves because they belong in the ecosystem. Wolves were driven to near extinction in the early 1900's. In 1995 the Department of Fish and Game reintroduced the wolves into the wild to try and build them back into the ecosystem that they once thrived in. Wolves were delisted from the Endangered Species act making it possible for hunters in Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana to hunt them. Gibson attracts the attention of urban citizens who want to put a stop to the slaughtering of the wolves by using a heartfelt logic

Dropping Out of High School

Dropping out of high school can lead to serious consequences. Having a high school diploma is essential if you want a job or expect to go to college. So many people have been able to get by without having a high school diploma making students feel like there is no need to keep going to school every day, but unfortunately that's not the case. Of course, there are other reasons why students drop out of high school such as pregnancy, learning difficulties, violence, and having their mind focused on other things. Some causes for dropping out of school can be the following: lack of financial aid, demotivation, drugs/alcohol, personal life problems, mind focus on other things, and no mindset towards the future. Dropping out of high school has its cause and effect. One thing students fail to be aware of is the cause and effect this will have on their lives. Dropping out involves many life changes. The causes can be helped or overcome. In today's society, drugs play a big role in high schoo

The Concept of Solitude in Literature

Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and Ernest Hemingway's In Our Time are two very different works in structure, story, and setting. Despite these differences, the two share a common theme: solitude. While prevalent in both works, solitude manifests itself differently. In most of the short stories of In Our Time, solitude is a good thing: it brings peace to the characters, especially Nick. In "Big Two-Hearted River: Part 1 ", Nick is camping alone in Michigan completely on his own. Despite being alone, he is not lonely.  In fact, Nick seems perfectly content in the forest, calling his tent "mysterious and homelike (Hemingway, 139). In "Big Two-Hearted River: Part Two ", Nick has a successful day of fishing until he reaches a swamp. He decides to return to camp, knowing that he can return to try again, and the story ends on a hopeful note. In these short

Scripture and the Epic of Gilgamesh

The story of Gilgamesh seems to have many similarities with the Holy Bible. Both have a story about a flood in which most of the human race was destroyed. In both books those who survived did so inside of a boat that ended up resting on a mountain. Both books have a story that tells of birds being sent out to see if the land was dry. I would like to take a look at three other similarities that I found in both books. 1) Men with amazing physical strength: Gilgamesh and Samson 2) Friendship: Gilgamesh and Enkidu; David and Jonathon 3) The quest for immortality/eternal life: Gilgamesh and Nicodemus First, I would like to look at the similarities of men with amazing physical strength: Gilgamesh reminded me of Samson, with their amazing physical strength. In the bible it recorded that while Samson was journeying to Timnah with his father and mother, a young lion attacked him. "And the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him, and he tore the lion apart as one would have torn apart a young goat, thoughhe had nothing in his hand. But he did not tell his father or his mother what he had done." Judges 14:6 It is this same type of incredible strength, that

Reflections on My Prayer Life

Beginning with Family Perhaps I used to pray when you were a small child, or I started to pray as a young Christian, I remember when I was a child. My parents taught me to pray. About 7:00 every night, we prayed together, my father took me put in hands, and read some traditional prayers. Truly, I disliked praying in the evening, because at that time, there was cartoon's program in TV. It's very interesting for me. However, although I was free or busy with studying, or sleeping, they also wanted me to pray. I think that through the prayer with family in every night, my faith have been kept, grown, developed. I always practiced it to become a habit when I stayed alone to study in the university. However, that habit was not practiced permanently. Now, I'm a religious. I must pray in morning, afternoon and evening. Prayer is not only duty or work, but also my right and responsibility to God. In the previous, I practiced prayer with my parent's force, but now I pray with freedom, love and w

Life and the American Revolution

After the American Revolution, the new nation of the United States stood as one of the biggest countries, extending twelve hundred miles from north to south, from Maine to Georgia. The new nation took on many new ideas in both politics and economics due to Enlightenment thought. However, their social lives remained much the same as before for many decades to come. Although the decades following the American Revolution is often times associated as an era of change, both subtle and abrupt, many things remained the same in the American daily life. By the early 1800s, a nationwide tax assessment revealed that there were near six hundred thousand dwellings in the United States, and by the 1850s, there were well over three million. Other than the abundance of land available for homes, the early marriages encouraged more births which produced substantially higher birthrates in the states than in Europe. The American population grew from four million in 1790 to more than seventeen million in

Oedipus Rex - A Great Tragedy

Sophocles, a Greek playwright, wrote the tragedy Oedipus Rex and it is now considered the epitome of all tragedies. The tragedy revolves around Oedipus, the king of Thebes and his own hamartia or tragic flaw causes him to come up with an anagnorisis or epiphany, which ultimately leads to his downfall. In the tragedy, Thebes is cursed with a plague which will only end if King Laius' murderer is apprehended and exiled from Thebes. King Oedipus vows to search for the killer with all of his power but despite advice from Tiresias the seer and Creon, his wife's brother, he continues to deny all they say. Soon, he encounters the realization that he did murder Laius and marry his mother; traumatized, he stabs his eyes out and exiles himself. Throughout Oedipus Rex, Sophocles' use of verbal and dramatic irony sustains suspense because it heightens the tragic feeling that the resolution exudes and to get the audience's attention at every new revelation after another. Oedipus and Tiresias' conversation exemplifies verbal irony because despite the fact that Tiresias is blind, he can se
