The Use of Imagery in Othello

In the classic tragedy Othello imagery plays an important role in characterizing and defining individuals and their respective personalities. The images transmit a good overall message of the play because through them Shakespeare demonstrates not just the story's theme but also his own views on issues such as jealousy, racism and gender. Throughout the play he uses the image of devil and angel to demonstrate the distinction between Desdemona's innocence and Iago's viciousness. In fact, the villain Iago makes some references during the story that clearly illustrate this difference between him and the angelical lady. In order to deceive Desdemona to the Moor, Iago uses her best virtues of goodness and generosity against her to suggest that she has an affair with ex-lieutenant Cassio. Although in reality, she only tries to help Cassio getting back his position. Another form of imagery used is the idea that Othello lacks rationality to balance his emotions and reason before taking his acti

God Sees the Truth, But Waits by Tolstoy

Introduction Russian author, essayist and philosopher, Leo Tolstoy enriched the literature; specifically the Russian literature heritage with enormous astounding genius literary works. The inconstancy of Tolstoy's life has left a great impact on his style of writing; approximately most of his works meant to be didactic, in which he arouses controversial topics and tackles them. Among dozens of short stories written by him, "God Sees the Truth, But Waits" is to be considered one of the best, and it was first published in 1872 in which this period has its significance on Tolstoy's life. In this short story, Tolstoy instigates many questions in readers' mind about truth, injustice and fate as he resides his readers between both spiritual and materialistic worlds throughout the course of the story. In spite of the fact that this story is a realistic fiction, it attracted our attention due to the allegory it implies and the significance of the values it reveals. Above all, it c

Also throughout his childhood James was home schooled but after his home schooled in 1813 he was enrolled at Zion church then at some academy somewhere in Murfreesboro Tennessee. Polk graduated from the university of North Carolina with his hon

Twitter

Today, news travels faster on social media than it does on news channels, and in rare situations news is discovered first on twitter before the news channels. For example, when the 2008 earthquake took place in china, twitter was buzzing about before the government was able to confirm the quake. Information during and after the quake spread at lightning speed through twitter from china to the rest of the world. The only way Chinese government officials were able handle the escalating attention to the internal crisis was by shutting down all access to twitter in china. (Twitter and the China Earthquake) These events lead to prove the power that social media, especially twitter, possesses in modern times is dynamically influential- but not always in a positive manner. The era of technology has brought about the fastest growing and constantly changing time of knowledge and communication. People of this rapidly amplifying age have adapted to a form of evolving with time. Twitter today is the most popular social media site among

Cultural Values in Beowulf

During the 6th Century, storytellers told stories of heroes and culture from their time. By the time stories began to be written down in the 8th century, the only surviving epic poem was Beowulf, which depicted the warrior culture of medieval England and Scandinavia. The poem follows the life, from childhood to death, of a warrior named Beowulf and simultaneously reflects the values of the society during this time period. Throughout the poem, many of the warrior culture's values are brought to attention, but the most significant to recur throughout this poem is generosity. Generosity is the single most important value embraced by the warrior culture, as it is absolutely necessary for the society's stability. Throughout the poem, there is one specific scene that portrays how crucial generosity is to the warrior culture. This specific scene is when Hrothgar realize

Fantasy in The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies

The Hobbit was a fantasy novel written for children in 1937 by JR Tolkien and beloved by many to this day. Recently Peter Jackson adapted the book for the big screen and successfully created an award winning, multi-million dollar trilogy. The final film, The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies successfully portrays the fantasy themes that Tolkien originally introduced in his novel. The criteria I analyzed to come to my evaluation include the characters and their costumes, the special effects the director utilized, the setting of the film and finally the overall message that the audience can reflect on. The fantasy genre typically contains elements that are not realistic and according to the Merriam Webster Dictionary is defined as "a book, movie, etc., that tells a story about things that happen in an imaginary world". In this case, Jackson brought Tolkien's Middle Earth to life on the big screen. One of the most evident reasons that The Hobbit is a good representation of the

Human Resources and Employee Retention

In societies based on consumerism, maintaining low employee turnover rates is key in long-term business growth. The United States, being the focus of this paper, best exemplifies the need for low turnover rates in a consumer-based economy. It best reveals the need for low turnover rates because of the significant financial losses businesses acquire when they cannot retain qualified employees. Reasons for losing employees can be extensive, however companies should be focused on retaining employees in order to maximize business growth potential. Business goals can be drastically impacted, especially profit-based goals. Employers and their workplace environments should accommodate and provide incentive that will acquire and obtain the best employees in that specific field. Companies should equip their human resources department with incentives in order to increase the quality of applicant, which in turn will increase overall employee quality. Considering the financial impact a high turnov

Let Me Take a Selfie

Selfies are the newest form of communication that has reigned prevalent in the last five years. Social media websites like Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook have pushed these cell phone self portraits to the front of the line. An article written for USA Today by Steven Petrow states that there are over one million selfies taken a day. Selfies have changed the way we look at the world, and it may be for the better. With the generation that is growing up in a world surrounded by technology that is practically made for selfie-taking, front-facing photos have become the new way for younger people to communicate with family and friends to share experiences and memories. Selfies are so popular not only with the youth of today, but they are also picking up with generations before its time; this is because we as a people have been taking photos of ourselves for now over one hundred years, it is so easy to take photos of ourselves, we have many different platforms of sharing selfies with friends, followers, and loved ones, and it brings us together as a people. Photography has been around since 1000 AD when Alhazen invented the pinhole camera. The first

Movie Analysis - Good Will Hunting

Ideally, society has established that students should strive and invest all that they have to attain the best education if they wish to be considered intelligent. However, within the film Good Will Hunting, Damon and Affleck exhibit groundbreaking, thought-provoking aspects of knowledge and experience that expose the philosophical truths of knowledge in society. Damon and Affleck touch upon the issues on knowledge: whether knowledge attained from others is truly one's own, whether knowledge from books exceed knowledge from experience, whether knowledge that can change people's lives is truly intelligent and whether knowledge should be contained or used to its fullest capacity. Additionally, through exploring these different subjects, Damon and Affleck define what they perceive to be genuine knowledge. In the academic world, there is a hierarchy, and only those who attend the best schools and receive the most prestigious education are deemed intelligent, bright, and knowledgeable. How

The Power of Literature

"But if your great desire is to learn the very root of such a love as ours, I shall tell you, but in words of flowing tears. One day we read, to pass the time away, of Lancelot, of how he fell in love; we were alone, innocent of suspicion. Time and time again our eyes were brought together by the book we read; our faces flushed and paled. To the moment of one line alone we yielded: it was when we read about those longed-for lips now being kissed by such a famous lover, that this one (who shall never leave my side) then kissed my mouth, and trembled as he did. Our Gelehot was the book and he who wrote it. That day we read no further. And all the while the one of the two spirits spoke these words, the other wept, in such a way that pity blurred my senses; I swooned as though to die, and fell to Hell's floor as a body, dead, falls" (409). In Dante Alighieri's Inferno, Dante depicts himself as a pilgrim who undertakes a journey to hell and back. In canto five, Dante reaches the

The Trophy Kids Go to Work

In the article "The Trophy Kids Go To Work" is perhaps a new point of view within the culture of the babies born within the years 1980 and 2001. This article talks about how the millennials are making a big change in our work force. Some of these changes include the mentality the workers have and how these employers are changing their ways of managing. A statistic in "The 'Trophy Kids' Go To Work" shows how these changes are in effect already by saying, "The generation's greatest expectations: higher pay (74% of respondents); flexible work schedules (61%); a promotion within a year (56%); and more vacation or personal time (50%)" (Alsop). The millennials are going out of their way to get what they want. Employers need to meet these expectations to make their employees happy. On the other hand, these kids are very fortunate and spoiled. These kids are handed everything in life just so nothing will end up hurting their feelings. These kids are being ba

The New Deal and the United States

After WW1, the United States suffered from a Great Depression. The Great Depression took place due to several factors, one of these is the stock market crash on October 24th, 1929, after people began to sell their stocks. The price of shares dropped harshly, leaving financial loss and panic. The long and devastating crash had never been seen before, it had a great impact on the United States economy. Many Businesses closed including banks, putting millions of people out of work and creating distrust of the financial industry. The wages for those still fortunate enough to have work fell sharply. Money inflated as the demand for goods reduced (Hardman). Americans were in great despair and had lost hope, but after four years, Franklin D Roosevelt became the new president of the United States and brought hope to the people with his New Deal. The new deals purpose was to completely reverse the effects of the Great Depression. Nevertheless the New Deal did not create a full recovery from the Great Depression, yet it left a real effect in two places, the American government and American society.         The New Deal focused on Roo

The Plight of the Homeless

Imagine feeling lost and not knowing what to do or where to go. You spend each night in the musky weather on a bench, under a bridge or even in an alley. Knowing that you are not judged by who you are but what you are, you realize that most people in society does not understand the true definition of homelessness. If you don't give much thought homelessness seems like a simple enough word. If you ask people to define the word they are likely to tell you that it means being without a home. That definition, or something closely resembling it might be thought of "the street definition." (Shumsky 2012) According to Webster's Dictionary homeless means "those people who have no permanent residence, especially those who live outdoors due to poverty." Throughout the world it is impossible to count the exact amount of homeless men, women and children, but it is known to be millions. Every day in the cities, countries and town's homeless people walk around with filthy rags of

National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)

There is very real potential in the NDIS. People living with a disability have historically experienced structurally entrenched forms of disadvantage. These disadvantages have manifested in a variety of ways and have been experienced differently on an individual level, yet broadly speaking they have effected all aspects of individual's lives and rights as citizens and persons; disadvantages have been political, economic and social. Together all three readings this week highlight the enormous impact disability schemes have on individuals and the monumental task the current reforms have in addressing these issues. Ultimately, any in depth discussion is both outside the scope of this discussion but also my very preliminary understanding of the issue. However, while the NDIS is being sold as significant and positive, any

The Free Trade Theory

Free trade concept is known as international trade without interference or barriers from governments. Free trade first known in early of 16th century. At that time , after the set in of feudal system in Europe, mercantilism policy has grew up. This policy focused on the principle that one nation gain is a loss to another. The benefit of foreign trade in that time was measured by the imports amount of gold and silver. Therefore, there was no net gain from trade. In 18th century Adam Smith, an 18th-century Scottish economist, challenged the idea in his book "wealth of Nations". He proved that free trading benefit both parties and showed how the scales of economy, which result from specialization in manufacturing, improve growth and productivity. Smith believed that free trade will change the international commerce. However, he was also believed that there are exceptions to the general principles of free trade (Farmer, 2011). Later in 1817, the English economist David Ricardo c

Overview of Jewish Death Practices

Death is something that most, if not all, people have a fear of. Whether it is death of him/herself, or death of a loved one, no one wants to go through the grief of having lost someone they love, or knowing that he/she is going to die. All people will go through some type of grief throughout their life, however, different cultures have different beliefs, traditions, rituals, funeral customs, thoughts about afterlife, and ways to grieve. For example, Jewish people believe that one should be buried directly after death. People who practice Jewish rituals and traditions have very particular death practices, including funeral, burial, and mourning periods. Different cultures have different views on what happens to life after death. Judaism focuses on life rather than death (Chapter Seven, 2015). They accept that death is a part of life because even though the person is no longer with them, their memories never die (Grollman, 1998). They believe that they are in this world because God wa

Cumberland Metals Case Study

Company Overview In less then 20 years, Cumberland Metal Industries has grown from $250,000 thousand dollars in sales to $18.5 million dollars in sales. It started as being a company that sells highly technical products, as the finished product, then it transitioned to selling products that were used as work in progress materials. The company's big break came from the introduction of ERG valves in the U.S. automobile industry. Cumberland made their trademarked "Slip-Seal" that fixed the problems associated with ERG, with that they gained a huge market share. This lead to the company growing very rapidly in the mid-1970s. Now we are evaluating the merits of the curled metal cushions pads. It is a new technology that Cumberland Metal Industries want handle, which is something they were looking to do in the first place. Even though Cumberland has 80% of the market on their own products, they were planning to diversify. That is because they don't want to be reliant on the indust

Persuasion in Bartleby

In Herman Melville's short story "Bartleby," there is a motif of the power of communication, or lack thereof. Although the narrator is the protagonist of this story, the man he hires to be his scrivener, Bartleby becomes the most important example of the effect communication can have. At many points in the story, Bartleby's communication skills are proven to be odd. The reader realizes through these examples that Bartleby is unable to communicate or even understand those around him sufficiently. Bartleby's lack of communication serves as both his greatest and most detrimental attribute. Bartleby's inability to communicate with others actually benefitted him in many ways. For instance, it allowed Bartleby to keep his job. First, Bartleby's odd qualities were one of the reasons he was hired for his job and one of the reasons his boss trusted him. He was praised for his tireless work ethic in copying, and was diligent, quiet and out of the way, all of which made him optimal for the position he was hired to. The lawyer also stated, "I had a singular confidence in his honesty. I felt my most precious pap

Ireland and Moral Civil Wars of the 1980s

In the 1980s in Ireland a period came about that has been dubbed the 'moral civil wars'. As Ireland during that time was still very heavily influenced by the Catholic Church, the people of Ireland were more conservative then they are now. During the 1980's, the government drew attention to moral issues such as contraception, abortion and divorce. These moral issues are of course very important concerns for a growing society, but unfortunately at that time they overshadowed important welfare problems. Ireland was experiencing a huge recession at the time, meaning rising unemployment, poverty and outward migration. Contraception was a very controversial topic in Ireland in the 1980's. The catholic church bans all modern contraception, abstinence being the only accepted form. Contraception was legalised on the 1st November, 1980. However there were still a lot of restrictions. The pro-life campaign in 1983 was a huge issue in Ireland at that time. The pro-life amendment

The Complete Maus by Art Spiegelman

In Spiegelman's, "The Complete Maus," he utilises an animalistic allegory in order to retell his father's story during the Second World War and the Holocaust. The absence of human facial features on the characters, in the graphic novel, raises the issue that the Jewish population of Eastern Europe were not treated as humans; but as vermin. The mistreatment of the Jewish people is a reoccurring theme in the graphic, and is emphasized by the allegory of German cats hunting Jewish mice. Also, the animal facemasks are used to symbolize the character's nationality and identity; and how often they were subjected to change in these life-threatening instances. The horrific events that occur in this graphic novel are made more tolerable to witness, as the use of animalistic features acts as a form of censorship. Subsequently, Spiegelman provokes further understanding of the persecution that the Jewish people were subjected to; as we understand that these tortured animals, are in fact, human bei

The Cost of Higher Education

College tuition across the U.S has been steadily increasing in the past few years. The average cost of tuition and fees for colleges across the country has risen by approximately 385 to 400 percent between1985 and 2005, and this figure may have doubled over the last decade. Why has the price of higher education significantly outpaced inflation, housing, or even medical costs? These ever rising costs has led to the much talked about student loan debt crisis that prevails in the U.S, where it is currently estimated that the outstanding student loan debt in this country is upwards of 1 trillion dollars. How could something that we place such a value upon be allowed to spiral out of control? There isn't any one particular reason for the steep increase but rather a combination of factors. The cost to run an institution of higher learning is one of those factors especially with privately run colleges, not all of these colleges are subject to government regulations so they normally set thei

Shortcomings of Limitless Wealth

Limitless wealth, or covetousness in most cases, is essentially the downfall of man. The lack of morale and greed that comes with the profusion of riches overshadows any benefits reaped from the diligence of members of society. John Locke's argument that the pursuit of limitless wealth could somehow benefit society, as a whole, is proved erroneous by the works of Aristotle and Thomas Aquinas. The perceptions of these two philosophers provide concrete rebuttals to the notion of any sort of good coming from the pursuit of limitless wealth. Aristotle's base for his philosophical views is virtue. From developing virtue to attaining virtue, the concept of a high moral standard is portrayed as a necessity for the common good in everyday life. Essentially, one should live well on the journey to be virtuous. Living well, though, is not living a lavish, elegant lifestyle with limitless wealth. On the contrary, living well, according to Aristotle, is living a life with virtue in mind. With limi

The Battle of Teutoburg Forest

The battle of Teutoburg forest was a pivotal moment in both German and Roman history. The battle would decide whether Germania would be colonized by the Romans or remain outside the Roman sphere of influence. The battle of a crushing loss for the Romans and the losses were so great it led to the deaths and destruction of three whole legions. The battle of Teutoburg Forest was fought around 9 C.E. At this time, the Romans had conquered the western parts of Germania which would have included the modern day cities of Cologne and Trier. Publius Quinctilius Varus was made governor of the Roman province of Germania to consolidate the lands and start building cities and establishing infrastructure in the new Roman province. During this time Varus had taken on a Roman educated Germanic warlord by the name of Arminius in order to use him to try and forge peaceful relations with the Germanic tribes still outside Roman influence. Little did Varus know but Arminius made secret deals with the Germ

The Role of China in a Globalized World

In an increasingly globalised world, there is one country that strikes as to have the most pivotal role and profound successes especially in the 21st century. China, " transformed itself from an isolated society into [a] superpower with global interests and responsibilities" (Hickey & Guo, 2010 p. 10) in the fields of politics, economy and foreign assistance. China's political influence and diplomatic affairs have extended across borders throughout the years and they are now, as the founding prime minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru would put it, "[t]he mighty power of the world ", knocking off previous formidable powers Russia and the USA (Uberoi, 2008). Despite being a socialist country, Guthrie (2006, pg. 9) states that China has progressively developed institutions of democracy, as globalisation takes over the world. The Chinese leadership established a new international order, to develop international synchronisation. With that objective, the Hu-Wen Adminis

Crime Scene Case Investigation

I have been on vacation from work the last two weeks. I work as a crime scene investigator for the Los Angeles Police Department. The other night I received a call from the mayor and was called to a scene where he was at three in the morning. I knew it was urgent because why would the mayor be on the scene of a crime, especially at three o'clock in the morning. When I got to the scene of the crime a woman was laying there. She experienced a tragic death. She was found in a chair with her wrists slit open from by a sharp knife. She was identified as Janice Brown, sister of Dennis Brown, who is the Mayor's best friend. There was a suicide note left at the scene, however, the mayor and Dennis seems to think wrongful death occurred and I was there to find out. I have been working as a crime scene investigator for twenty years, and have worked in thirty-six of fifty states. After I spent about two hours on the scene I already knew wrongful death had occurred. So the first process I started
