China and International PoliticsIntroduction Over the past decade, China's political and economical growth have been the center of attention to various -not to say all- countries all over the world; it's almost as if China's success has become the "Brangelina" of politics. However, just like some of China's neighboring countries (such as South Korea) have developed a closer bond and consequently created a popular opinion showing China to be more highly regarded, some major powers, such as the U.S, have shown skepticism towards China's so-called 'peaceful rise ' (Sutter, 2004, p.284). By analyzing three of the main theoretical approaches (realism, liberalism and social constructivism), this paper will argue that China's incessant growth is not to be regarded as a threat to the United States' security. The Rise of China: Realism The realist perspective is extremely broad; nevertheless, it focuses on three key ideas: statism, survival and self-help (Baylis et al., 2011, p.87). Statism, in simpler |

Vile Bodies by Evelyn WaughEvelyn Waugh's 1930 novel Vile Bodies is filled to the brim with wit and satire; the author seemingly makes fun of all his characters and has no mercy even for the old and frail. Nevertheless, some of his more complex and, in my opinion, moving satire is directed at what he refers to as the "Bright Young Things," that is, the new rich generation that followed the end of the First World War. He portrays this generation as weak and fragile underneath their outer semblance of put-on sophistication and savoir-vivre; in reality they entirely lack experience and know-how, as Waugh shows by depicting them as totally unable to comprehend the value of money. The "Bright Young Things" are at times portrayed brutally and harshly, but most of the time Waugh adopts a more compassionate approach; he is certainly more sympathetic towards them than at the older, Victorian generation whom he viciously mocks, as we shall see. The Bright Young Things are shown to be quite different than the party-crazed |

Competition and Cooperation for LeadersMan is a social being. Human beings are developed to live among others. It is very difficult for a recluse to lead a happy and fulfilled life. In general, in all spheres of life, we cooperate with our fellow human beings to survive. For example, while driving in a traffic congested road, we cooperate with other drivers to make sure that we all can get through that road without much chaos. So many such day-to-day experiences dot our journey. Cooperation is the basic driving force in our lives. However, I can only partially agree to the statement that quality leaders can be shaped out of young individuals only by instilling in them a sense of cooperation and not competition. There are of course many advantages to this. Let me consider those first. Industries today have their foundations laid on projects, which their employees perform in a group. Brainstorming always helps us to better define and understand the problem that we are facing, develop innovative and effective solutions and e |

My Old NeighborhoodIn the current world, transformation of various aspects in the society including people is happening every minute. Not only does the transformations involve activities closely associated with the daily living but also involves other external factors such as change in organization of structures or even accumulation of fossils that develop over long time to make crude oil. However, many people are quick to point out changes that may in one way or another touch their lives. On this basis, I will discuss the various changes that I noted in my old neighborhood where I grew up while living with my parents. To start with, few years ago I went back to Benzie County found in Michigan State. This is where I grew up and made a lot of childhood friends. As I walked through the town from the train station, I saw various buildings that reminded me of my childhood age. Surprisingly, I bumped on one of my childhood friends by the name Christine, who worked at a law firm that was closely located to t |

Wise Blood by Flannery O'ConnorCarl Jung, a famous psychiatrist, once said, "Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes." That is to say, a person with enough insight into his or herself develops a true understanding of their own qualities. This idea can be applied to Flannery O'Connor's novel, Wise Blood, in various precedents. In Flannery O'Connor's Wise Blood, the narrator employs the unconscious complexities that many of the characters have, as well as the Jungian archetypes that many of them categorically fall into in order to highlight not only the characters' grotesque, mental qualities, but also the emotional distresses that the characters may suffer from throughout the novel. Enoch Emery develops a messiah complex through the course of the novel, which inevitably illustrates to the readers his delusion of self-importance. For instance, when Enoch Emery is talking to Hazel Motes, he says, "'You act like you think you got wiser blood than anybody else,' he said, 'but you ain't! |

Li Ho's Imaginative StyleIn 36 lines, Li Ho gives a vivid insight on his poetic form of an extravagant oriental poem about a young woman's beauty. He writes the poem in a desirous tone, making the reader want to read on. The poem is very sensuous and shows that the speaker yearns for this young delicate blossom. His wide range of figurative language uses many similes, metaphors, and a collection of descriptive adjectives such as, "her mirror, two phoenixes, and a pool of autumn light." Li Ho carries an imaginative style that puts the reader into his poems and allows them to see what he describes in this particular setting. This artsy piece of work by him does not carry any punctuations throughout the entire poem. He makes the poem continuous, like the young female's long hair in line 16, "a cloud down to the floor." Li uses a rhythm that seems to |

The methodical layout of the board room makes the hierarchy of power in the room obvious. Lord Sugar is seated at the center on the table, in the biggest chair, and he sits with his chair higher than the boys. Even though the boys know that Lord Sugar holds the most power in the room he feels like he needs to assert his authority by being physically positioned higher up. This means that the boys are forced to literally look up to him |

Men's Reproductive RightsThe first reason why fathers should have more reproductive rights is because it is unjust for a man to pay child support when he has no say over whether or not to keep the child. Dr. Allan Stewart (Sociologist) and Dr. Trussle (Gyno-anthropologist) "[estimate] that every year 25,000 - 32,000 women in the United States become pregnant as a result of rape. On average 5% of those rapes are female-on-male with 626 children being carried to full term from male rape" (Stewart & Trussell, 2000). For the unfortunate men whose rapist's decide to carry their child to term, the repercussions from their horrific ordeal does not stop after the physical act. Since 1998, 25 female-on-male rape cases that result in pregnancy have been brought before specialty courts. These cases are unique in that the woman has petitioned the court to compel the raped man to provide financial support to the child conceived during rape. One of these proceedings included the case of Hermesmann v. Seyer. In |

The NCAA and Paying College AthletesThe typical college athlete wakes up at the crack of dawn, has an individual training session, goes to class until 3 to 4 pm, followed by a team practice session, mandatory study hall, and then finishes homework or studies for a test. Now, factor in meals, studying, and a part time job if possible. According to Forbes Magazine, "a typical Division I college athlete devotes 43.3 hours per week to their sport, that is 3.3 more hours than the typical American work week" (Forbes, 2014). Instead of getting what they're worth, the players receive athletic scholarships that don't cover the full cost of attending school, leaving many of them living below the poverty line, says the report, "The Price of Poverty in Big Time College Sport" (Huffington Post, 2011). With collegiate athletes working more than the average American citizen, and receiving scholarships that don't cover full school costs, they should be paid for their services. The point of this is that a scholarship doesn't |

Decolinization of Burma and VietnamThe region of Southeast Asia was chocked full of natural resources. Some of these natural resources included coffee, tea and spices. These resources are what originally brought western countries to the area. Many of the top countries in Europe and Asia wanted to conquer parts of this region. Lockard describes the perspective of colonialism from a world view; he states "it served primarily to link Southeast Asia more firmly to a world dominated by the West and to introduce Western ideas and technologies". 1 As Lockard is right in that instance, the conquest that came along with colonial power demonstrated to be a culture clashing experience. The two major imperial powers that will be discussed are Britain and France. Both of these countries had dominated over quite a few regions within Southeast Asia. The two regions in particular are Burma and Vietnam. While both countries were under imperial rule, the journey of decolonization each one went through were distinctive in their |

Vonnegut's Anti-War ThemesKurt Vonnegut, one of the most popular science fiction writers of his time, is known for his antiwar themes in most of his novels and for his use of dark humor and satire to prove that war is a horrible thing. Kurt Vonnegut's view on war stems from his experience as a prisoner of war during the bombing of Dresden in World War II when over a hundred thousand innocent civilians were killed by the United States. Throughout his books, Kurt Vonnegut reiterates that war is evil and is harmful to society by showing its effects on society and individuals. In the science fiction novels Slaughterhouse-Five, Cat's Cradle, and Breakfast of Champions, Kurt Vonnegut uses an antiwar theme that war is like cancer to society and our planet, in order to prove that war is not justifiable under any consequence. In Slaughterhouse-Five, the main character is a veteran who has flashbacks to when he was in World War II. He wants to write a book to expose how the US killed hundreds of thousands of innocent Ge |

Child Labor in Turkey, Ethiopia and IndiaIs child labor declining or increasing? This question arises very occasionally. The United Nations website states, "Economic growth will not reduce poverty, improve equality and produce jobs unless it is inclusive." This statement shows that there is an economic problem which must be acknowledged by nation-states, as child labor is their jurisdiction. Despite the United Nations' success in creating legislation, Turkey, Ethiopia and India have not correctly implemented said legislation and are thus facing issues with child labor. In Turkey, the problem of child labor lays within excess reproduction in a household in order to supplement the family income. Ethiopia's child labor problem lays in its young population, most of which engages in illegal labor during the time they should be in school. Having the second largest population of the world, India's child labor problem lays in twelve percent of its child population engaging in child labor. Turkey's population is ve |

The Danger of Cell Phones"Siri, how's the weather today?" Cell phones in present day have a variety of functions including voice commands that can tell the user just about anything he/she want to know. Present day smart cell phones might be considered one of the greatest technological breakthroughs for society, however, they encroach the safety of phone users and others around them when working, walking, studying, or driving. According to John Hildebrand from The Business Times, Cell phones are a distraction in the workplace. Employers and business owners can lose up to thousands of dollars in profit from distracted employees. Just ten minutes a workday texting for a 12-dollar-an-hour distracted employee can lead up to $575 in overpaid wages and $1,726 in lost productivity a year. These numbers are quite generous considering most employers would say their employees spend 30-40 minutes a day texting/browsing. Money lost in overpaid wages and lost productivity would then be more than tripled (Hildebran |

Hedonism and the Desire Satisfaction TheoryImagine having all the money you could ever want, nice cars, fancy clothes, and beautiful women. Sounds like a very good life, doesn't it? Well, according to philosophers living the good life has to do with one of two theories, hedonism and desire satisfaction. The theory of hedonism focuses on happiness and pleasure while desire satisfaction theory clarifies the importance of fulfilling our desires. Later on I will compare the similarities and differences of hedonism and desire satisfaction theory. I will also explain their strength and weaknesses along with adding my own ideas to what living the good life should be about. Both hedonism and desire satisfaction theory purpose that happiness, pleasure and desire are the main sources that measure the good life. The desire is determined by desire satisfaction theory and happiness along with pleasure attained through hedonism. These two theories are also very vague in the matter that they allow for each person to have their own model of |

After Apple Picking by Robert FrostEven before we think of either a summary or a critical an appreciation of "After Apple Picking", we must remember that Robert Frost is a landscape poet. His poetry is always enriched with the depiction of agrarian and natural scenes. In "After Apple Picking", he presents a simple theme that how peacefully an overtired villager is lulled to sleep by "the essence of winter sleep", Nature. An apple picker has a plentiful crop. He is picking apples while standing on a two pointed ladder. The winter evening falls soon. The apple picker is fed up with apple picking now. The cold winter breeze is filled with the scent of apples. It is a perfect setting to induce sleep and he is "drowsing off" under the powerful effect of Nature. He wants to pick apples and tries to "rub the strangeness away". Soon, he is on his way to sleep. In this process "magnified apples appear and disappear." The poet leaves the end of the poem open. He does not confirm of whether it would b |

Avatar and Quebec AboriginalsThe Aboriginals of Quebec and the Navi from Avatar, have several things in common. First of all they both believed in animism. Animism is the belief that all things in the world have a soul. For example, an animal, a rock and a human have a soul. In the movie Avatar there is a good example of animism. When Neyteri, the girl Navi, killed the "dog" she made a prayer to ask forgiveness to him and thanked him for his soul. The same is true in the Aboriginal World about their belief in animism. When the aboriginals hunt, the day before, they always dance to the gods and ask the animals to give them their soul, and when they do kill them, they say prayers to thank them. The second similarity is that they both use the same kind of weapons. T |

Democracy and Human RightsIn the article "Linking Democracy and Human Rights," David Beetham tells a very detailed comparison between Democracy and Human Rights. Democracy and Human rights have long been regarded as two separate political views. Democracy deals with an administration that involves ruling the people directly or indirectly through free voting (elections), while human rights deals with the rights that belong that to every single individual that is in a society. To date the separation between the two is no longer accepted, but rather they go hand in hand with each other. This paper will review Beetham's main arguments and highlights any assumptions that he uses to support the claim that Human Rights and Democracy goes together. Beetham begins this article by stating that Democracy and Human Rights did not always go together and that they were both viewed as two separate political points. This separation came about during the cold war period between the United States and USSR. This separation was |

History of Segregation in BaseballIn the 18th century, the outbreak of sports occurred and many people found hidden talents that they had especially in within the African American race. Segregation has been a battle that has been going on for many centuries between blacks and whites. Due to segregation, no matter how well a black male played they were not allowed to play on an official team. There are many factors of people who have contributed the desegregation of Baseball, which in 1945 ended when the first black player Jackie Robinson was signed to The Brooklyn Dodgers. Baseball is an all-American past time sport but what some don't know is when baseball first was invented in 1839 by a man name Abner Doubleday it was not designed to be segregated. It wasn't always called baseball, the original name was "Townball" the word baseball originated in England five years before the game was invented. It was in the alphabet book next to the letter "B", the first baseball club was organized in 1842 b |

Essay on Judeo-ChristianityReligions do not miraculously appear in history out of a blank space. Religions are developed over time across generations, often times internationally, and tend to become influenced by other cultures and religions. Some religions develop among the people and cultures that have adopted it, while others tie multiple religions together, adopting moral codes and other ethics from each other. The success of each religion is determined by the spread and popularity among those who may seek it out. Religious success can be achieved through political standards, cultural standards, and generational inheritance, among other things. Christianity developed involving several major cultural influences, including Mesopotamian influence and Greco-Roman influence. Over the years, the parallels between these cultures are evident, providing evidence into what exactly influenced each religion from the next. As a matter of fact, the parallels between Mesopotamian culture and Judeo-Christianity are uncann |

Motivation to Win - The NY KnicksThe reason for success behind any work or objective is of motivation. Motivation is commonly defined as the general willingness or desire of a person to complete any task. There are a lot of factors involved in this process which shall be discussed later in the research paper. Motivation also consists of a process which includes factors like need, motive, behavior, consequence, satisfaction or dissatisfaction and feedback. For example a certain player wants to score a basket in a particular game. He wants to score so that is his 'need', then he decides to play that particular game in which he wants to score which becomes his motive. So when he plays the game, supported by his performance, is the behavior which results in him scoring a basket or not. Then the outcome of the scoring is the consequence which makes him happy. Benefits of International Accounting StandardsGlobalization has managed to increase the interaction of people from various lifestyles. While it has led to networking among people from various continents, it has also greatly assisted in the field of commerce. Several transactions are carried out daily between different organizations, some of which are publicly listed and traded companies in major stock exchanges around the world. A huge amount of traffic is experienced online since most corporations have embraced information technology. With so many companies in different sectors of the economy being set up, there was an urgent need to set rules that were meant to regulate the quality of goods and services offered. This was to ensure uniformity in a world of diverse preferences (Sawani 2009, p.5). The International Accounting Standards Board constituted these universal guidelines. However, as from 2001, they have been renamed International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). In preparing their financial statements, all compani |

The Biological Reasons for Gender DifferenceSince the evolution, from the start of humanity, distinction between men and women is in our life. Not only in humanity but also in nature, distinction between male and female can be observed. Just like in humanity, female animals are generally responsible for caretaking while male ones hunt and find food for the rest of the family. So, it can be easily said that gender differences are everywhere. After the industrial revolution, this issue becomes more significant because women get in a lower position. After the realising of human rights, idea of being equal comes up and many articles written about the gender differences and how it is come into existence. In general, there are two common remarks about distinction between two sexes. Firstly some researchers and scientists like Stephanie Garrett, Stacy L. Smith, Cynthia Kennard and Lila Leibamitz indicates that gender differences are created by society and they are coming from nurture. They believe that education, social life, culture a |
