The Aboriginal Half-Breeds

The Indian Act of 1869, issued by the Parliament of Canada, was influential in the oppression of the Aboriginal Metis women. Not only did the Indian Act regulate First Nations sexuality, but it also determined the status of Aboriginals depending on who they married. The status and citizenship sections of the 1869 Indian Act policy had connotations that were simultaneously racist, patriarchal and heterosexist. People of mixed ancestry, such as the Metis predated the Indian Act which only included "Status Indians" and excluded anyone who was not. The policy regulated Aboriginal women by revoking their Aboriginal status if they chose to marry a white man. Furthermore, not only did she lose her status but her children did as well. This caused Metis children to have a lack of identity and social acceptance. Legal status denied the majority of mixed bloods any recognition of their Aboriginal heritage. Furthermore, white society denied them acceptance within the white community. F

A Perfect Day for a Bananafish by J.D. Salinger

In J. D. Salinger's short story, "A Perfect Day for a Bananafish," Muriel Glass, the female protagonist, is obsessed with material goods, ignoring the needs of her mentally unstable husband. Seymour Glass suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after serving in European theater during the horrors of World War II. Muriel removes herself from Seymour's life, in favor of fashion and other self-interests, have no intention of working toward repairing a disintegrating marriage. Muriel and Seymour rarely communicate with each other, creating a wide relational chasm. All of these small, but destructive problems in his marriage, lead Seymour to take his own life. It never specified in the story whether Muriel was always very materialistic, or if she turned into a materialistic woman while Seymour was at war. However, it is awfully obvious early into the story that she cares very little for things other than her greedy, materialistic lifestyle. Muriel seems to be rooted into the

Nick Carraway in The Great Gatsby

Throughout his novel, "The Great Gatsby," F. Scott Fitzgerald uses Nick Carraway's descriptions of Jay Gatsby to reveal Gatsby as a one man who has become corrupted in his pursuit of the "American Dream." But who exactly is Nick Carraway? We don't know very much about Nick in the beginning. He doesn't present many facts about himself other than: he grew up in a respectable family and went to Yale, he likes literature and considers himself one of those "limited" specialists known as a "well-rounded man," and he works in the bond business in New York City.(Fitzgerald 4) He's connected to wealthy and important people, like his cousin Daisy and Tom, his college acquaintance, but he is definitely not one of them. Unlike everyone around him, Nick Carraway is not a wealthy man. He sits on the outside of these wealthy social groups and it gives him a good view of what happens inside them. He has a good eye for character and isn't afraid to use it. Nick is a pretty honest guy at the beginning, but he's not always nice. He's very pleasant and capable of gett

Environmentalist Bill McKibben

It is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore the fact that global warming is to an imminent and inevitable extermination. Over the past two decades, scientists have been working arduously in search of answers of climatic change and other nature-based phenomenon instead of finding a way to prevent it. Bill McKibben, an American environmentalist, educated scholar and author of newspaper article "Now or Never," has worked extensively on the impact and kindled people's interest in global warming. McKibben discusses how burning carbon based fossil fuels would lead a gargantuan amount of carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere. More importantly, the molecular structure of the fumes traps heat causing dramatic climatic alteration such as extreme flooding or drought. This constant unbalance is known as global warming. Throughout the article, Bill McKibben is deeply concerned yet he portrays his persona as eccentric with a few amusing remarks to capture the reader's attention and interest. For instance, his essay is indeed academic and informative, it presents a potential global crisis which

Frederick Douglass and Harriet Jacobs

Is there any bond stronger than the one between a mother and her child? In Frederick Douglass's narrative and "The Incidents of a Slave Girl," by Harriet Jacobs, this question is put to the test through the horrors of slavery. Linda Brent has a strong relationship with her grandmother who instills the morals that Linda lived by before she sacrificed in hopes that she would be freed. Oppositely to Brent, Douglass did not have a relationship with his mother and her absence shaped him into the man he would later become. Although these motherly figures are not always present in the protagonist's life, they were still able to influence their children a great deal despite how far slavery pushed them. The authors included these relationships in the ways that they did to show the cruelness and inhumane side of slavery. This is seen through the morals Linda's grandmother instills in her and the effects his mothers absence has on Douglass. Because Linda's mother died when she was young, her motherly figure growing up was her grandmother of whom she was very close too. Her grandmother was a free woman but chose to stay n

Gun Control and the Gun Show Loophole

When the founding fathers were organizing the framework of the United States Constitution in the late eighteenth century, the amount of power the national government would possess was an issue that came with much debate. The two parties of the day were the Federalists, who advocated a strong national government with an intricate system of checks and balances, and the Anti-Federalists, who promoted strong state and local governments that included small republics to keep the local communities in check. John Jay, a former Federalist, opposed this idea while framing the Constitution, saying a country "Should never be split into a number of unsocial, jealous, and alien sovereignties." As one can tell, the parties rarely ever agreed with one another, so the Constitution was created through numerous compromises between the opposing sides. Today, the debate goes on between the contemporary political parties; the Republicans and Democrats. While the Democrats favor a large federal government

The Faith of the Zuni Indians

Abstract This paper explores the interesting and complex religion of the Zuni Indians. There are many aspects of the Zuni religion and all those aspects are important, but this paper covers only covers some of the most fascinating parts of their religion. The parts of religion covered are some of their myths, like how the earth was created and how people came to the earth, who they worship, and their religious societies. This paper also looks at religion and what it is about and at how Zuni religion has manifested itself in American culture.  Zuni Religion Religion is everywhere in the world. It is in the news, in books, and everyday conversations. Religion has its way of being in everything that people do. But what is religion? Kottak (2012) defines religion as "beliefs and rituals concerned with supernatural beings, powers, and forces" (p.186). Religion also involves rituals are symbolic performances that tend to suspend everyday norms. Kottak (2012) says that rituals &q

Policy Review - The Clean Air Act

The United States is the world's largest producer and consumer of environmental protection technologies worldwide (EPA). The Clean Air Act was set forth in March of 1960's by the United States Congress. The clean air act of 1970 is a federal law that controls the air emissions from steady and moving sources. The clean air act also gave the Environmental Protection Agency the right to create the National Ambient Air Quality Standards, which protects public health and welfare and to organize emissions of harmful air pollutants. Because of the clean air act agencies can always implement new laws to protect our environment through amendments. The main purpose of the clean air act of the 60's in the United Kingdom is to reduce air pollution from stationary sources such as power plants and steel mills. Since power plants and steel mills are mainly located in cities and towns with high populations of adults and children the environmental protection agency had to take charge. These plants wer

Wind Power - An Effective and Renewable Resource

This paper focuses on the debate surrounding the use of wind power as a renewable resource. The basic information regarding wind power will be given, as well as the opinion of both sides of the debate. The conclusion will focus on my findings and the reasons behind it. Introduction A natural resource is considered renewable if it is replenished with the passage of time and can be replaced in relatively short period of time. Renewable resources are all around us comprised of the air we breathe, the soil we walk on, the water we drink, the plants we smell and use for food, and the sun that keeps us and planet Earth alive. (College of Agriculture) While we as a planet are lucky to have these renewable resources at our disposal, we also have the benefits of other natural resources which however are not considered renewable. These resources cannot be replaced in a short period of time, and in many cases, cannot be replaced at all. These resources include fossil fuels, oil, coal, copper,

Chemical Stimuli and the Heart Rate of Daphnia

Introduction In this lab we were asked to examine the response of an organism to the presence of chemicals. In this case, the organism we were examining was a Daphnia. Two separate unknown chemicals and a control were used in the process, with the control being water. Our predictions were that one of the solutions would cause the heart rate to increase, while the other solution would cause the heart rate to decrease. Methods In the beginning of the lab, we acquired a Daphnia from a tank of water with a syringe. Placing the Daphnia on the microscope, we then recorded it's heart rate four different times for fifteen-second intervals. After these trials were complete, we then repeated it. However, this time, we put the Daphnia in "unknown 1"." After engulfing the Daphnia in the solution, we again ran the trial, recording its heartbeat once more. After this portion of the trial was

Benjamin Braddock and The Graduate

The film, "The Graduate," centers on Benjamin Braddock, a recent college graduate with no real purpose or direction for his life. Unfortunately, not having future goals isn't Benjamin's only problem – he's easily overwhelmed, socially awkward, superficial, and reveals very little personality. Unable to be assertive, he's much like a piece of luggage; just passing by. He drifts through life. Benjamin Braddock doesn't fit into society, and partially because of that, is malleable, like a piece of plastic (which one of his family friends overtly states about Benjamin's personality by say one word "plastics"). It's clear from the very beginning of the movie that Benjamin Braddock is not going to have the white picket fence and ranch house with kids. He's just going nowhere, and finds himself in amazingly awkward situation where

Analysis of the Truman Doctrine

In a time when Russians were attempting to spread communism, President Truman had no choice but to issue a response. On March 12, 1947, he issued the "Truman Doctrine" with the objective of containing Soviet communism by providing financial and other assistance equally to Greece and Turkey. As a result, he articulated the U.S. new foreign policy of international peace, free from coercion. Greece and Turkey were weakened countries surrounding Russia that were susceptible to the spread of communism. Britain continued to provide financial support until they were no longer able on March 31, 1947 and this support was in order for Greece to become a "self-supporting and self-respecting democracy." President Truman did not want Greece to become a communist state

Kunstler, Kolbert and the Environment

James Howard Kunstler's 1993 book, "Geography of Nowhere,"" contends that today's cities and towns are ruined by corporate gigantism, abstract renewal patterns, and public buildings that we have built. The sprawling system of far-flung structures such as houses, offices and discount marts connected by freeways are expensive, inefficient, and unworthy of human affection. Kunstler further argues that people today have a great number of possessions such as modern technology that over time will not be worth maintaining because of insignificance and the failure to anticipate the cost of the social problems we created in letting our towns deteriorate. In contrast, Elizabeth Kolbert's 2008 article, "Turf War"" argues that today's lawns which stretch over millions of acres of America's towns and cities waste resources. Although lawns carpet America's suburbs and frame our standard visions of home, they are affecting us because of the chemical fertilizers and pesticides people use on their la

Gender Interview Assignment

Every culture has gender roles as well as expectations of the way women, men and children should dress, behave and look. Gender roles are predicated upon the way people act, speak and behave to express themselves as males or females. I interviewed my aunt, Pat Johnson - a seventy-one year old mother of three about her life experiences and how being a woman has impacted and shaped her life as a whole. I will be discussing some of her beliefs as a woman as they relate to her gender and identity. When asked the question if Johnson considered herself as a feminist, her response was that a feminist is a person that thinks a woman should be independent, not needing a man, and could do all things. She considered herself not to be a feminist and was neutral on this belief. Gender roles can be influenced by past generations within families and ideas of certain behaviors according to gender can differ among cultures, social factors and eras. Growing up in western Baltimore in the 1950's, Johns

The Parable of the Wedding Feast

Marriages in biblical tradition (Jewish and Christian), typically represent a symbolic expression of the conventional union between God and his people. A wedding banquet during this time period was a joyous occasion, with great importance placed on the lives of the betrothed. "The Gospel of Matthew," like all the New Testament Gospels, was composed as a literary work to interpret the theological meaning of a concrete historical event to the people in a particular historical situation " (Boring 89). Mt 22:1-14 utilizes this tradition and expresses wedding celebrations in order to exemplify the significance of Jesus's goal to bring salvation to those on Earth. The parable of the wedding feast unfolds into three parts; the inviting of guests, a call to the outcasts, and a removal. (Brown 664) Matthew paints the scene of Jesus using a parable to describe the fact, "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding banquet for his son " (Mt 22:2). Using a wedding banquet

The History of Harley Davidson

It began in 1903, in a 10'x 15' wooden shed in the backyard of the Davidson family home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It was a time in history when a bicycle was a necessary but crude vehicle, used mainly for transportation on unpaved roads; a time in history when the horseless carriage - the automobile - had just come into being, and was considered by most to be a wacky, noisy, loud, smelly way to travel. Certainly, a car would never take the place of the horse. But to Arthur Davidson and William Harley, it was only logical that if the horse and carriage were being replaced by a self-propelled four-wheeled vehicle, the common bicycle should progress in the same way. Soon after they started work on creating a motorized bicycle, Arthur's two brothers, Walter and William, joined the pair. In two years, they produced three motorcycles, and the Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Co. was born. In 1904, the first Harley-Davidson dealer, C.H. Lang of Chicago, opens for business. By 1909, Harley-Davidson

Overview of the Planet Jupiter

Ancient astronomers saw Jupiter as a "bright, wandering" star" and they most likely associated it with the mythology of the time. Ancient Romans named the planet after the Roman god, Jupiter (Zeus in Greek mythology) and the astronomical symbol (see Figure 1) is a representation of the lightning bolt carried by Zeus (Crystal). In 1610, Galileo Galilei made the first detailed observations of Jupiter (Harvey). He discovered Jupiter's four large moons (see Figure 2) Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto (aka the Galilean moons) and documented their motions around Jupiter (Wikipedia). This was the first discovery of a center of motion not apparently centered on the Earth. It was a major point in favor of Copernicus's heliocentric theory of the motions of the planets (Jupiter"). main physical data/characteristics Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun and the largest planet in the Solar System (see Table 1). It has a mass one-thousandth of that of the Sun but is two and a half t

China and The One Child Policy

The one child policy was established in 1979, in an attempt to regulate China's out-of-control, ever-increasing population. In 1979, when the policy was adopted, the population in China was over 950 million people. Today, with a population of 1.3 billion, China is the most populated country on earth. But without the implementation of the "One Child Policy', there could have been almost 400 million more people in China. Made mandatory by Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping, the One Child Policy worked to address ongoing economical, social and environmental issues caused mainly by overpopulation. It was initially intended as a temporary fix, yet after 33 years the policy still exists. It has impacted and challenged China in ways that were expected and unexpected, both positively and negatively. The One Child Policy appears to have succeeded in one of its aims "a declining birth rate. According to The World Bank data, China's birth rate has plunged from almost 4 children per woman in the 1970's

Holy Ghost Girl by Donna Johnson

In Donna Johnson's memoir, "Holy Ghost Girl," Johnson shares her dramatic childhood, spent in the shadow of David Terrell. Donna's life consisted of traveling with Terrell, her family, and the Holy Roller crew to seek "the world with its terrible beauty"(p.236). Witnessing a series of miracles, hypocrisy, and abandonment, Donna comes to doubt the validity of David Terrell. Was David Terrell a prophet, or a con? David Terrell was the leader of the tent revival system Donna and her family were affiliated with. He "was a twenty-seven-year-old six-foot looker with black hair, blue eyes, and a smile that flashed Holy Ghost charm " (p.25). Terrell was able to win the hearts of the families that came to see him with his natural movement and smooth outflow of words on the tent's stage. He preached with the promise that if anyone trusted wholeheartedly in the Lord, good thing

Gun Control and the Republican Party

Gun control is one of America's most contentious issues. Differing opinions on gun control run the gamut; some believe that a gun is a reasonable form of self-defense that should remain minimally regulated for purchase, and others would argue that due to a gun's destructive nature, it would only be reasonable to regulate their purchase in a strict fashion. Thus are the republican and democratic standings, respectively. The common question that leads to the formulation of these beliefs has been long debated: Do guns kill people, or do people kill people? The Republican Party would be more inclined to say that people make the choice to use guns for destructive reasons, while the Democratic Party would argue that, due to their easy availability, guns kill people. Although I concede that ultimately people make the choice to use guns destructively, I believe that if guns were sold under stricter screening processes, they'd ultimately cause less damage. Therefore, I side with the Democrati

America and the Obama Administration

Under the Obama administration, our country has undergone and witnessed many challenges and changes. As seems to be typical in America, the country is divided in terms of whether or not they support this administration; though, despite personal opinion the facts continue to withstand. President Obama has indeed achieved changes and is continuing his attempt at change within our country, although much of the time his actions were questionable, sometimes not forthcoming and at other times involved questions of constitutionality. President Obama has been recorded stating that the United States constitution is flawed, despite its importance and positive affects on the status of our nation today. To simply state that the constitution is flawed is a precise remark. In many ways our nation is flawed as well. The augmentation that occurs within the American culture as a result of an ever growing influx of other communities gathering together has greatly affected our nation overtime. A great

Strategic Quality and Systems Managemen

Introduction Strategic Quality and Systems Management is one of the important systems that each organization should develop to ensure organizational performance and also to position itself among similar organisations in the same region or market. In this assignment, I look at operational management, strategic change management and quality management systems and why organisations such as ASDA should implement integrated quality management systems that can increase organizational stability and performance. I also look into the actual plan of quality management system as an example how ASDA could be a key player in human rights field or a leader in providing quality services and look at the importance of monitoring and evaluation as well as Kotter's eight steps in change management. Introduction about ASDA Background ASDA is a global grocery and general merchandising retailer headquartered in United Kingdom. It is the fourth largest retailer in the world measured by revenues and the

Temper Tantrums & Operant Conditioning

Abstract Most parents of a toddler have experienced the frustration of dealing with a child throwing a floor-thumping, hair-pulling, arms flailing tantrum. Even though this can be embarrassing and challenging for parents and you want to give in to the child, this behavior can be changed with operant conditioning using shaping and a strong behavior modification plan. Operant conditioning is a type of learning in which behavior becomes more or less likely to occur in the future based on the consequences following the behavior. The type of consequence is either a reinforcement or punishment that determines whether the behavior is likely to increase or decrease in the future. Shaping is a method of successive approximations to get the desired behavior during which responses are reinforced for getting closer to the desired end behavior. The experiment that I'm using to change my toddler's behavior will include when and how to discipline and reinforcing her effectively by setting standards
