Beowulf an Epic? In Beowulf, the main character, Beowulf, is proclaimed a hero for slaying three large animals. In actuality, Beowulf is a cold-blooded murderer. Grendel, the first animal that Beowulf slaughtered, did nothing but mind his own business. He lived at the bottom of a lake, for cryin" out loud. He did eat the occasional human, ... is it bad when other creatures nibble on a human for a snack once in a while? The second animal Beowulf killed was Grendel's mama. Her only crime was to try and avenge her son's murder, something that is almost guaranteed to any human mother. She was al...

What is an ideal hero in epics? An ideal epic hero, a king or a warrior, in Beowulf is similar to that in the Odyssey and many other ancient tales. The whole kingdom will know him. He is always brave and larger-than-life strong. For example, in his battle with the monster Grendel, Beowulf used "bare hands", not some magic sword or an army of football players. The hero is also clever, he outsmarts the enemy with his seemingly mortal capabilities. He likes to brag about himself and his powers a lot, showing his self-esteem and pride. For instance, Beowulf wants the world to know about his majest...

In the short story "The Enduring Chill" by Flannery O"Connor there is a very strong relationship between mother and son. Asbury, the son, is a college student who constantly comes home to see his mother because he is not feeling well. The protagonist, Asbury Fox, is obviously at absolute dependence to his mother. He is maternally dependant and has no sense of self. A reason this might be is because of the absence of his father. He is an angry teen that is bottled up, trying to grow up, yet is still very depending on his mother. Not having that fatherly figure in his life has made him angry tow...

In the essay "The Jacket" by Gary Soto, the author is trying to illustrate what a son would do for his family. There are many examples throughout the essay that prove this point. In the story there was a young boy who had asked his mother for a leather jacket, because he wanted to fit in with the other kids. His mom had gotten him a green jacket that was too big for him. Although he didn't like it, he still dealt with it. He had to wear it for three years. He still showed his mom that he appreciated it by saying thank you to her. It is often called America's first great war novel, yet Stephen Crane's The Red Badge of Courage is more than just a tale about the civil war. Although there may be constant struggles, there usually is one major event that creates somewhat of a bridge between childhood and adulthood. The Red Badge of Courage traces the steps and major events in the life of Henry Fleming, focusing mainly on his evolution into manhood. We meet H...

The mother of this child when choosing to have an abortion makes the choice of "death" for that baby. Is this fair? People surrounding the abortion issue argue that if a mother were of sound moral character she would let the child live, and mak...
