1. Hemingway Hero - Old Man and the Sea
... and the Sea bears several distinct allusions to Christ. The clearest passage that shows this is when Santiago sees the first of two sharks. He exclaims "Ay" and the words is described as having "no translation" (Hemingway 107) and "perhaps [being] just a noise such as a man might make, involuntarily, feeling the nail go through his hands and ... into the wood" (Hemingway 107). This is unmistakably an allusion to Christ being nailed to the cross and perhaps feeling a sense of despair. The similarities to Christ, however, begin at earlier in the book with the fishing line cutting Santiago...
