Save the World in One Year

 

            The planet Earth is a massive place; one person cannot possibly make the entire planet a safer and healthier place to live. If many people work at making their town safer and healthier the planet as a whole can become a better place. I propose we educate Americans about how to better take care of the environment in which they live. Such a program would allow people to become more environmentally conscious as an educated choice. .
             A child born in an industrialized country adds more to consumption and pollution in their lifetime than 30-50 children born in developing countries. This statistic can be changed if enough emphasis is placed on its importance. Many American citizens simply do not know the problems that they are causing. Our culture leads to the misunderstanding that humans are the most important being, thus we deserve to take anything and everything we can from the Earth.
             As a junior in high school I was first exposed to the truth about what is really happening on our planet. The invaluable information I received from a year in Advanced Placement Biology drastically changed my views on our ever-changing world. I have realized that information is the only tool that can truly aid in making those changes positive. .
             There was very little expedience, as the physical Earth, and its inhabitants, became what they are today. If one chooses to follow the scientific evidence of evolution, the Earth came into being 4.6 billion years ago. A mere 100,000 years ago our own species Homo sapiens appeared on the world scene. Homo sapiens has been a very unique force in the history of life on Earth for one reason, culture. Culture allows us to change the environment to fit our needs. .
             American culture is, and has been, influenced greatly by its educational system. .
             Language skills, math, and science are required of every last student. Each of these subjects when put to use, works in favor of our culture.
