The limited exposure to NRL in these states not only reduces support for the sport but also impedes opportunities for new players to be noticed and thus, prevents new players from entering the world of rugby league. .
Youth.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics in 2011 released youth sporting figures where Rugby League participants aged 15 years and over recorded 9.5% becoming the second lowest participated sports across Australia whereas outside Soccer has become the number one highly participated sport with 33% (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2011). It has been noted that this is because of negative experiences throughout school resulting in reduced numbers of teenagers and women participating in sports in general which would evidently affect rugby league seeing as it is highly physical. .
Injuries.
Rugby League is seen to be a high intensity physical contact game which is entertaining to watch however it is almost expected that players suffer from short-term and long-term injuries. Statistics show that on average, 2398 injuries, both minor (corked knees or ankle sprains) and major (concussions or broken ribs and dislocations) occur each year in elite competitions (Seward et al, 1992). This restricts participation numbers as the ARLC, despite creating and upholding rules, regulations and punishments are unable to control injuries suffered by any one player. Family and friends are often concerned for the safety of players which can deter players from continuing the sport. .
Injuries also prevent players from fulfilling work, education or family commitments and therefore could also cause hesitation amongst future participants (Seward et al, 1992). For example, Former West Tigers Winger Taniela Tuiaki suffered an ankle injury which forced him into retirement. He had no support from the club and because of the injury, he had no means of obtaining financial income or support. Marshall et al (2004) concluded that rugby is one of the most injury-prone sports with research he conducted showing that 22 out of 36 head injuries resulted in long-term headaches, concussions and vision problems.
