An Unexpected Experience

An event that changed the way I perceive myself was when my mom passed. I was only six years old and my sister was nine years old. One evening, my mother got sick and was rushed to the hospital by an ambulance. I remember seeing two big guys, who were paramedics, coming in to pick up my mother. She was placed on a stretcher and was escorted out of the house into the ambulance. A breathing tube was then placed through her nose to help her breathe correctly. My family members began to get in their cars and follow the ambulance to the hospital. My grandma, sister and I rode in the ambulance along with my mother. The paramedics began to take her vital signs and they were extremely abnormal. After taking her vital signs, they gave her various medications to keep her heart rate down. It seemed as though the paramedics could not figure out what was wrong with my mother. .
My sister and I began to get worried and scared because we have never seen my mother so sick. As we arrived at the hospital, we were asked to step out of the ambulance while they rolled my mother out the stretcher. My mother then was admitted into the Intensive Care Unit. My sister and I kissed her and said, "I love you mama. " I did not know those were going to be my last words or even my last time seeing her alive forever. We were told that no children were allowed in the Intensive Care Unit, so my cousin took us back to my grandmother's house. While at my grandmother's house, we ate, washed up, and got ready for bed. I could not sleep that night because my mother would always tuck us in and read us a bed time story before we would go to sleep. Of course, she could not that night because she was hospitalized and not feeling so well. .
In the wee hours of the morning, I was up pacing the floor to see if someone would call the house with any good news. I eventually fell asleep because we had school the next morning. Early that morning, we were awakened by my grandmother.
