Deference - Consideration and Respect

After that occurrence, I gained my manager's respect because he realized that I did what I was told and I didn't think that I was above my co-workers or the orders of my superior. There are always occasions when you feel like you should stand up and combat everything that is being asked or expected of you, but that is only your ego and pride playing to your dismay. Deference allows you to realize things in a manner that you wouldn't initially realize because you are always trying to be the one on top or in front or in charge.
Willful and humble submission requires great humility but most of discipline. It is not hard to always work hard and try to be the best and the front-runner for everything, but it takes extreme discipline to realize where you are not yet ready. It takes discipline to recognize that you must give a certain person respect and submit to them. In the case of our current pursuit deference play a gigantic role. We have all been independent people for a long time, and, now, we have to listen to every command of every brother in the chapter. It is definitely a struggle at times, but we show deference. We realize the brothers are where we want to be and that we have to take heed to their guidance. Deference can be what makes and breaks our pursuit. The absence of it will cause unwarranted retaliation and rebuttals, but with it we can move quicker along our pursuit and become the men we set out to be, and emulate what the brothers do because they also show extreme deference in the positions.
"First of All, Servants of All, We shall Transcend All" is the motto of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. Servants of all meaning the brothers set out to serve the community.
