That glucose helps other foods that are consumed to be digested, in order to gain the important nutrients that one needs to function. Since sucralose is made by scientists, it has no glucose unit and therefore our bodies have never seen it before and don't have the enzymes to digest it (Mercola 95). Johnson and Johnson contends that a positive attribute to Splenda, is that it "just passes right though your body " (Mercola 75). However, the digestive system is much more complicated than that. Splenda.com states that, "all is eliminated via the urine " which sounds all well and good but FDA's final rule cited that there is potential for sucralose to accumulate in the fetus and in a recent study 12 percent of sucralose remains in males (Brusick). If an advertisement said to Americans they should drink an unnatural, sweetened, chlorinated solution by saying don't worry, it's safe because only 12 percent remains in your body because your body can't digest it, would Americans do it? .
Although splenda is chemically made, natural sugar is the leading source of obesity in America today. According to Barbara V. Howard, PhD and Judith Wylie-Rosett, RD, EdD, who work for American Heart Association, obesity rates have become a huge health risk in the United States and much of that reason is due to sugar in American's diets. The consumption of Splenda does not show any effect on weight and also does not effect the energy expenditure. The consumption of Splenda does show other effects such as ones on American's brain and stomach problems (Howard). Natural sugar is unhealthy but natural sugar in moderation isn't going to harm a person physically. According to a study done by Rajendrakumar M. Patel MD, splenda side effects include bad migraines. In moderation natural sugar will not cause you pain but the intake in Sucralose will affect your productivity day to day. It is worth giving up more sugar in a diet in order to stay fit but it is worth more to give up splenda in order to stay healthy and not have chemicals in the body.
