Accepting Homosexulaity

.
One of the most coveted things to do as a teenager is surf the internet. Most of the time, young people are looking down at their phone either scrolling through Facebook or stalking their favorite celebrity on Twitter. Since so much time is spent in these places, media can play a huge role in shaping the views and beliefs of a teenager, especially if a teenager's favorite celebrity is passionate about it. A large amount of the support in the gay pride movement comes from the younger generations who have been influenced by their idols who they see posting on social media sites and hear giving speeches at awards ceremonies. Two obvious celebrities who are passionate about the gay pride movement are Macklemore and Lady Gaga. Macklemore, a famous rapper, sings "I might not be the same, but that's not important. No freedom till we're equal; [that's] right I support it" in his song "Same Love" dedicated to his gay uncle. (Haggerty) Lady Gaga, another famous singer and bisexual herself, also had many songs devoted to gay pride and regularly expresses her support homosexuality. These artists and other famous people have affected people to accept homosexuals and the lifestyles they choose to live. Another significant idol in the awareness and acceptance of homosexuality is Jason Collins, a professional basketball player in the National Basketball Association who 'came out' recently and has received much support and love from friends, family, and fans about his confession. The media's acceptance of homosexuality is portrayed on the television as well. .
Television, in the past, has avoided any type of work that could have been perceived as homosexual, but lately, television has been doing something different. In a documented study, researchers state, "Empirical evidence suggests that television influences adolescents' attitude and behavior". (Werner-Wilson, Fitzharris, and Morrissey) Television has promoted homosexuality by the series of commercials titled "It Gets Better.
