While under the power of the king, the king gave lots of power The Church, almost as much as he had. This was not acceptable. Not only that, but The Church also collected tax from the people called, The Tithe. The people began to have enough of it and created the National Assembly. The National Assembly created the Civil Constitution of the Clergy. This document took power away from the catholic church by having religious toleration, seizing the churches lands and used the land to pay back debt. They also used it to end to tithe once and for all. After all that, The Church was no longer allowed to choose there bishops, they were elected by the clergy and then paid by the government instead of the people.(PowerPoint Notes) This brought thought to napoleon, so he made his priority to make peace with the church and have the people be with them. He did this by making a deal with the pope. This consisted of starting Catholicism as the religion of the french. This deal would only work of the pope agreed that the land taking away from the church would stay away. And so it was, which made The Church not an enemy to the government anymore. On top of this, Napoleon made sure The Church had little power as possible, so he made it so he would nominate the bishops instead of the pope, and the pope would approve these new bishops.(PowerPoint Notes) This all shows how Napoleon and the Revolution felt the same way about the church. They both saw how The Church had too much power that needed to be handled with, reasonably. Reasons being, religion was a huge peace configuration between the people and the government, which Napoleon needed in order to insure peace between everyone. .
One way the goals of the revolution were undermined, was by Napoleon's political reform that made it so he could not be taken down from his throne which he made brought it upon himself to be emperor. While King Louis was king he was not able to be taking off his throne no matter the circumstances, except of course a revolution.
