Parents would only marry off their children to an individual with the same financial status and of the same caste. This practice has additionally been practiced in the lower castes as well. Though this practice was use centuries ago, it remains relevant in Indian society. Additionally, child marriage was prevailing. Child marriage was a way to restrict children from marrying outside their caste and community. Though today it is banned, it still remains relevant but secretly. .
             There has been an evolution in arranged marriages. In Indian society today, the potential bride and groom are asked for their consent. The potential couple has a chance to meet with the families together and have a short unsupervised meeting to decide whether or not they want to marry their chosen partner. During the beginning of arranged marriages, the bride and groom were not able to see each other until the day of the wedding, however this has changed ("Arranged Marriages"). Considering the fact that a man or woman can choose who they want as a partner, there is still a lot of pressure on children by the parents, to choose the partner the parents desire. Additionally there is a lot of pressure to get married, so a couple can start to have kids. Coincidentally, there exists more pressure on a groom from his parents. The groom's parents are set out to have a good reputation, which qualifies that the bride should have good manners and be respectful. When a bride enters a family, she lives with the husband's family. There has to be a good relationship between the bride and her husband's family. It is known that the bride is deemed as the family's pride and honor. Indian families care very much about their reputation and honor in society's eyes.
             In an arranged married, a potential bride and groom are chosen by parents, matchmakers, religious leaders or community leaders to guide a daughter or son through the procedure of finding the right marital partner.
