Children and the Challenges of Starting School

In order to help their children experience positive feelings and avoid anxiousness, parents must learn how to control their own behaviors. Children pick up on their parents' feelings, therefore, maintaining a calm and and consistent attitude towards the situation is key. When leaving the child, a parent should create an exit ritual by saying a pleasant and loving but firm goodbye, this shows confidence and stability to the child. Following through on promises made, such as when the parent will return, is crucial in order to build the confidence the child needs to get through the time he or she spends at school.
The personal, social and emotional development of a child largely depends on the relationship between themselves, their loved ones, their teachers and their peers. Schooling is one of the most important socialization processes a child can go through away from their families. It plays an important role in shaping a child's understanding of the self in relation to others and realizing and comprehending his or her identity beyond the family. As I mentioned earlier, to ensure the emotional and academic wellness of school children, many schools have adopted the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. The EYFS states that there are four guiding principles that take place during the early years, these four principles are: resilience, capability, confidence and self-assured. According to the EYFS children thrive in enabling, secure environments and learn to be confident and independent through positive relationships with the people with whom they engage with.
The interaction between children and their peers in a classroom or school setting, is one of the many key interactions that will help shape their identities. Children interact with their peers at and away from school on a daily basis, acceptance and positive relationships between one another is extremely important for their emotional and social development.
