Personal Statement

Like all other immigrants, I came to America in search of a better, more fulfilling life. My generation came of age with a flavor for Western civilization, even though some of us turned our backs to it during the revolution - an affair that was destined to come and yet took everyone by surprise. Relating to this flavor in a personal way, I can say Western civilization was good to me in that it kindled in me the urge to be curious. It flung open the doors of my imagination, and allowed me the possibility of adopting a new self, or rather, new selves. America, became a migrant space for me, a place where you are not marred by your background, and have many chances, as many as you wish, to start anew.
Iranians are a people of divine rituals and sacred books. Our culture embodies a thicket of thoughts, from our hospitality to our convoluted classical poetry. We have more than our fair share of epics, grand and opulent narratives that are the sources of our pride. We emphasize the greatness of our ancestors, their contributions to the world civilization, their tolerance of other religions, their sense of poetry and justice.
I came to America having finished high school in Iran. Subsequently, I went to college and studied computers, not because I was interested in the field, but because I wanted to do what was practical. Little that I knew, practical is what you love. I got my BS in computer science in 1989, and worked in the field for a few years. In the mid 1990s, I decided to go back to school and this time, study what I liked; psychology. Even though the option of studying to become an MFT was open to me then, I decided against it; because I was not ready for the time commitment that was involved. Therefore, I opted for the MA program instead, hoping to be able to find a full-time teaching position at the community college level. But I was in for a rude awakening; the reality of situation was that full-time teaching positions, although did not require a PhD, were all going to candidates with PhDs! .
