Neo-Conservatism and American Society

All religious groups were worried about sexual permissiveness and gay rights. A letter from Concerned Women for America states that civil rights for homosexual and lesbians will destroy the family and give the image that homosexuality is just another civil right ( Bevery Lahaye 23.6e). They were concerned also about women who worked outside of the house. They believed that the more time a woman works away from home, the worse off the family would be. Fear of tension in the family and ill raising of children became an issue due to woman at work. Rising crime rates and drug usage was an alarming issue in the 1980's. Marijuana became not only popular with the youth of society but became intertwined into the lives of many adults as well. Cocaine also became common during this age of conservatism. Fundamentalists saw this problem and wanted to resort back to the very principal that our nation was founded upon. Our nation was founded on God. Even on our money does it say "In God we trust." As the years went on people became more profit oriented and less religion oriented. For this reason fundamentalists wanted to recreate society or reshape society around religion rather than religion around society. Restoring America was a popular title in this era. This book written by Peter Marshall and David Manuel focuses on giving America back its Christian heritage. This was a key issue during the 80's and was very moving (Peter Marshall Ministries 23.3). Many preachers gave sermons both over the radio and on television. These sermons rallied interests among the populous and help to raise funds to support like minded candidates. These fund raisers helped push for the elimination of legalized abortion, reinstituting prayer into school, and defeating the Equal Rights Amendment. .
Much of the conservative views and perhaps conservatism itself would not have been a success had it not been for the innovative ways of advertising and fund-raisers used.
