The music/radio industry only allows people to listen to what they consider popular, hence POP music. Have you ever called into a radio station and asked them to play some other song off a one-hit wonder album or an underground band that you liked? Even though it's the same type of music they play, your answer will always be the same; no one wants to hear it because it isn't popular. But why should people care what music is being played as long as they like it? Well, think about it, you have no choice in what is being played on the radio stations; they decide for you what is going to be popular. If a poorly written song is being played once every hour on the radio, and is being heard everyday like that, then of course it will become "catchy- to most people that hear it, you have no choice. So if your friends find it "catchy-, then you will find it "catchy- too. You're going to want to fit in with your pseudo friends now, aren't you? And this is where the fear of rejection comes into play. No one wants to feel left out of the circle with anything. So in order to keep your so-called coolness among your friends you will have to listen to now not only what the radio wants you to hear, but also what your friends want to hear. Let's take this for instance, I love any type of music, but I prefer to listen to hard/heavy rock. All of my friends listen to this type of music, but if I was to put in country music, which is what I was raised on, they would ridicule me for even owning that type of CD. NO ONE wants to feel derided over something as simple as music choices. Overall though, people tend to listen to the music that will allow them to feel accepted by others, so what better group to fit into other than the POPular group. .
We see them everyday; there seems no possible way to get away from them anymore. From the magazines we read, to the television shows/commercials we watch, celebrities nowadays have a major affect on the loss of our individuality.
