Buddhist Analysis of Movie "Shallow Hal"

He wants the supermodel look. Where did he get this notion of pulchritude? From his dad, from advertisement, TV, magazines, etc. This accumulation of habits and false ideas lead to hardened views which then fabricated his illusory reality. .
In short, he is trapped in a burning house and is oblivious to the inherent danger and affliction. His whole life, in pursuit of ectomorphic beauties, is going nowhere. .
             Scene:.
Jack, through causes and conditions, is trapped in an elevator with a Peak Performance Guru, Anthony Robbins. Robbins listens to Jack's life story and situation and decides to help poor Jack. Robbins, out of pity, uses hypnotism to "deprogram" the way Jack perceives beauty. Jack leaves the elevator unbeknownst of his "new perception." All of a sudden, Jack sees the world in a different way. He is able to befriend attractive women with ease. He sees them as very attractive, even though everyone sees them as not so attractive. Now, Jack DOESN'T know that everyone sees them as unattractive. Jack found his true inamorata, Rosemary, played by Gwyneth Paltrow. Jack sees Rosemary as a very attractive woman, although everyone else sees her as a 300-lb woman.
             Analysis:.
Meeting Robbins in the elevator symbolizes that in the worst of time, in a place with tolerable suffering, we may encounter world transcending knowledge. Our world is such as place. It is not totally hellish and it is not totally heavenly either. It can be a place suitable for transformation. Robbins symbolizes Awakening to Ultimate Reality. He is not bounded by the conventional fetters of the world. He is not governed by ads and movies. He sees the world as it really is, without any filters. Using an "expedient device", upaya (fang bian), as the scholars would say, Robbins helps Jack see the world in a more real way. All the years of years of conditioning melted like wax. In Buddhism, encountering the Dharma is like that. 10,000 years of darkness is illuminated by a single flash of light.
