Mice and Men Theme

In this story, "Of Mice and Men- by John Steinbeck, George and Lennie travel all over the place together. They meet many people and go through many struggles together. I think that the theme of this story has to deal with loneliness and isolation. Many characters mention that they are unhappy or lonely. This story teaches a great lesson about the nature of human existence. " 'Course Lennie's a God damn nuisance most of the time,"" said George. "But you get used to goin' around with a guy an' you can't get rid of him."" This quote is said when George and Slim are talking in the barn house and no one is inside but the two of them. This quote supports my theme because George would like to get rid of him but he cannot because he needs Lennie's company or else George would be lonesome.
Lennie whined, "I wisht George was here. I wisht George was here."" This quote was said when Lennie was in Crooks' barn house and Crooks was telling Lennie what if George doesn't come back from town. What if George stays in town and leaves you here? Crooks gets Lennie worried and Lennie begins to wonder different things about George. This quote supports my theme because to Lennie, George means a lot to him. George is a great companion to Lennie.
"Sat'iday night. Ever'body out doin' som'pin'. Ever'body! An' what am I doin'? Standin' here talkin' to a bunch of bindle stiffs "a nigger an' a dum-dum and a lousy ol' sheep "an' likin' it because they ain't nobody else."" This quote is said when Candy, Crooks, and Lennie are in Crooks' barn house talking while the other guys are in town. Eventually Curley's wife comes in and they begin to talk but Candy and Crooks want to leave because they don't want any trouble but she stays to talk. This quote supports my theme because Curley's wife even talks to the least people she would ever want to talk to which is Crooks, Candy, and Lennie because she has no one else to talk to.
