"Much that they are asking to be done can be done without the radical redefinition of the word "marriage," says Crews, of the Massachusetts Family Institution. "There are things that are already available for those who want to be in a relationship that doesn't qualify for marriage" (Jost, 2004, p.7). In other words, heterosexuals find no reason for the definition of marriage to be changed. .
Since the definition of the word could easily be changed or altered, opponents also looked at several other reasons not to allow a law to be passed allowing gays" to marry. The theories and views on religion and its role in individuals" lives and relationships are strong and many religions go against gay marriage. One bible verse that is brought up to back the idea that same sex marriage is unholy is Leviticus 18:22 "Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable (Leviticus, 18:22. New International Edition)." With verses of the bible stating that this type of activity should be prohibited and is looked at like the people involved are less human, it just adds to the moral of the opposing side's view. Coinciding with the bible are religious beliefs that play a role. Many people feel very strongly about their religion, so it is going to take a lot of convincing to get strong religious people to except gay marriage.
Along with religious beliefs, the laws of the constitution and the enforcement of those laws are promoted by people who are against same sex marriage. It has recently got the support of President Bush. Bush called for a ban on same-sex marriages in the United States. He feels that, "the union of a man and a woman is the most enduring human institution, honored, and encouraged in all cultures and by every religious faith. Marriage cannot be served from its cultural, religious and natural roots without weakening the good influence on society (Bush, 2004, p.1)." Bush was under pressure from gay oppositionist to make a stand on this issue and put something into act to deny the possibility for gay marriage.
