When I arrived at work , I felt that my boss was very heartless because he did not understand why I was upset. He stated that since there was nothing I could do, I should have left the car beside the road.
Gray's Recommendation.
On Mars, if there's nothing you can do to solve a problem, then there is not reason to be upset about it or talk about it. .
Evaluation.
Incident II.
Early in my work career, I served as a middle school secretary. This job required that I handle all secretarial duties for both the principal as well as the assistant principal. The majority of the faculty and all of the clerical staff were women and we found it difficult to talk to the male administrators. Women were made to f eel that any question asked was stupid. However, the male teachers and coaches would come to the office, talk about sports briefly, ask the same questions and be treated differently. The assistant principal even asked the principal, in my presence, why the women on staff asked such stupid questions and why they didn't think before speaking. This type of attitude created an atmosphere of fear and timidness and the women on staff felt uncomfortable asking questions or verbalizing opinions. .
Gray's Recommendation.
On Mars they use the least number of words necessary to make a point. .
On Venus words are used to express feeling as well as content. .
Gray states that nowhere in the workplace do our differences show up more dramatically than in the area of communication (Gray, p. 23). Gray goes on to state on page 25 that on Mars communication is used primarily to solve problems and get a task done, while on Venus they use communications for other purposes as well. Men use communication in the workplace primarily as a way to convey content or information but women on the other hand use communication as a way to solve problems, minimize stress and feel better, create emotional bonds to strengthen relationships, and as a means to stimulate creativity and discover new ideas.
