Of Mice and Men

 

            The size of a man means nothing when it comes to his personality and the kind of person he is on the inside. In the book "Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck, Lennie, one of the main characters was mistreated in a lot of ways. "So you forgot awready, did you? I gotta tell you again? Jesus christ your a crazy lil" bastard! " pg. 29 Problems with Lennie ranged from being accused of sexual harassment, to forgetting, to murder. Even though Lennie had complications in the brain, he was like a kid at heart, ("I could pet it with my thumb as we walked along George" pg. 6) to the point that he wouldn't even hurt a fly. Literally. But because Lennie was such a big guy, very strong, and abnormal in the brain, he intimidated many characters and was often picked on. " By christ, he's gotta talk when he's spoke to! " pg. 25 But the human race fails to see that even though a man with what many would consider "deformities", can be some of the kindest, gentlest, whole hearted people you would ever meet. And this is something that our society definitely needs to improve on because it singles out, and ruins a lot of people; treating them different because of the cards they were dealt. .
             Lennie being handicapped in the mind, made for some serious issues throughout the book. He cost his, and George their jobs back in weed as well at the new ranch. With knowing not what he was doing, he unintentionally "sexually" harassed a woman by holding onto her dress and not letting go. Being the kind of guy that he is, he got scared and didn't know what to do but hang on. The same happened with the woman from the ranch, Curley's wife. Only instead it was her head, and he ended up snapping her neck. None of what happened was intentional but it still made problems for both George and Lennie. Lennie because he was the culprit, but George as well because he had to leave with Lennie if he was to get fired. Although nothing, as well as no one, can take back what happened to Curley's wife, Lennie had to face the facts, and therefore forced George to kill him before Curley got to him.
