Beowulf

Because Beowulf performs these great deeds he is recognized by thee bards and scops, he becomes part of the Germanic history. During the era that Beowulf was written people were aware of that life was short and that an impartial fait determined their lives. They believed that there was no eternal life, however, if they were victorious in battle the bards and scops would include them in the oral history "As a boy, Beowulf was abandoned by his father Ecgtheow, who fled to Hrothgar [king of the Danes], and Beowulf was raised by his maternal grandfather, king Hrethel" (Strong Skilled 38). Ecgtheow was exiled from his tribe, the Geats, for killing a warrior of a neighboring tribe and Hrothgar helped him return among his people. However, before Ecgtheow had the chance to repay Hrothgar for his generosity he dies. So when Hrothgar needs help defeating Grendel, and Grendel's mother Beowulf feels a social obligation to aid Hrothgar for helping his father. "Beowulf literally "jumps at the opportunity to fight Grendel, Grendel's mother, and the dragon" (Warfare in Beowulf). The Monsters that Beowulf battles represent evil and he lf is eager to battle them because of his strong belief in wyrd, the ability to take control of his fait, this was an important concept. In Beowulf, evil can be broadly defined as the beginnings or principals opposing the well-being of mankind; malignancy threatens the social fabric of the human community, the moral code of heroic society, and man's relationship with the Drihten God" (Evil in Beowulf). "If Beowulf belongs to the right side which we can identify, than his advisories must be representative of the wrong party, and consequently represent the face of evil" (Evil in Beowulf). Although in the epic Beowulf, a fearless warrior, Beowulf, attempts to defeat evil in many battles, nevertheless, he is unable to defeat evil completely because, while evil is degenerating it is also regenerating.
